Hello! I am here to share my costume making passion with you!
I have been making men's historical costumes for over 25 years and have a wealth of experience and knowledge that I am keen to share.
I will be covering the basics but also the more complex aspects of making historical costume.
As a UA-cam newbie (is this a mid-life crisis?!) I would love you to join me on this journey.
So grab a needle and thread and lets go....

Welt Pockets...Again!! But a bit slower (Hopefully!)
Hi Someone thought the other video I did was too quick, so I have (hopefully) gone into more depth in this video. I talk through one pocket and then demonstrate another three afterwards. Hope you enjoy. @SewMrsBee

Hi! This video is short and succinct but it does what it says on the label! I show you how to sew a yoke on the back of a shirt or blouse with enclosed seams for a neat professional finish. Apologies that it is all white, but as with all my videos I am showing you something in real time that I happen to be making. I hope you enjoy this video and like and subscribe to my channel @SewMrsBee

Re-creating a c.1802 British Red Coat

This video shows the journey of making a c.1802 Soldier's coat. I have used hybrid methods of construction (a mix between hand and machine sewn methods.) There is a section of me pinning and sewing the lining (when the music starts!) 1742 Coat: Nearly Complete And Handsewn Buttonhole Tutorial!

This video is the final stages of the making of the c.1742 coat! I talk through all the areas of the coat, and then you watch me sew my final buttonhole and slipstitch the cuff in place and right at the end cat the hems - it’s a thrill a minute!!! Seriously though, if you are making one of these it will help you see what you are aiming for and all the bits you need to consider. However, you are...
Creating A Historic 1742 Military Redcoat

This video is as much an aide de memoir for me as well as sharing it with you guys. If I need to make another one of these coats, by hand I need to remind myself what I did and what I would change. This is not staged - everything is being done as it happens. The coat itself took about 4-5 days to make. Piecing Woollen Cloth in the 18th Century
Переглядів 208 місяців тому
Hi! I searched UA-cam and couldn’t find a video on how to piece fabric in the 18th Century. If I find examples of how to do it, I will post another video at a later date. In the meantime, here is my way of dealing with having to add a section of fabric on because my lining wasn’t wide enough. If you know a different way, please let me know. Exploding 1730 Breeches Pattern
Переглядів 929 місяців тому
Ever wondered how to get a scaled pattern from a book to fit you - or your client? This video shows you how to ‘grade’ a pattern to fit you. It is a method that I like to call ‘Exploding’ this is because you literally cut the pattern into small segments, and then move every section away from each other to make the overall pattern your size. Things to consider are that to make a pattern bigger i...
How to Hand Sew a Waistcoat (Vest) Pocket
Переглядів 1519 місяців тому
Hi, this video is to show how to hand sew an 18th century pocket mouth. In hindsight I would possibly have used broadcloth on the back pocket bag so that when the pocket flap is lifted you do not see lining. However, I think this would create unwanted bulk. Also, in future I think I would stab stitch the top edge of my pocket mouth close to the cut edge. I hope you find this video useful, and i...

This video is a lifesaver, thank you for posting! ❤
My absolute pleasure 😊💕
Thank you, this is very useful!
Glad to be of help to you! Happy Sewing 🧵 😊
This is so much easier to follow than the pattern instructions! I knew there was a better way to do it! Thank you so much! ❤
Glad it was useful to you 😊
Please can you do a slower step by step.
Will do!
Hi Josephine. I have done another version - hopefully you will find it useful: Welt Pockets...Again!! But a bit slower (Hopefully!) ua-cam.com/video/fgMDOXlM__E/v-deo.html
Nice simple tutorial, thank you for this!
You're welcome!☺️
Sadly this video is not titled well. "How to create Piping - Without a Piping Foot" would have one think they will see a technique for using the standard foot. Instead, I just watched a video that should have been titled "How to create Piping - With a Zipper Foot".
Hi thank you for your feedback.
This is an excellent tutorial and I feel much more confident that I can do this. Thank you so much!
Ah thank you 😊 Good luck and Happy Sewing 😊
This was super. I really appreciate it. Do you have on in the same vein for how to complete the lining?
Hi! Do you mean a video of how to put the lining of a waistcoat together?
@@SewMrsBee yes!
I will do one for you…as soon as I upload it I’ll let you know - it will be a couple of weeks though 🤞🏼😊
That is so kind. I’m going to have to soldier on with my written instructions because I have a deadline. If you end up doing I’m sure people, including me, will find it helpful.
@leannamcenearney298 sorry I can’t get it done sooner - good luck with your waistcoat 😊
this was brilliant and helped me so much - cheers!!!!!
Thank you! That’s great news 😊
Thank you! 😊
Amazing tutorial, very helpful! And your machine is so quiet, I am so jealous!
Thanks so much! 😊
This video is brilliant thank you so much was really struggling to understand the instruction I had in a pattern but all done and excited for the next pair of welt pockets
Aw thank you! Glad to hear it was helpful 😊
Ty for this video. One question. Why is my back pattern longer?
Hi. It should be slightly longer so you can ease it into the front to fit over the hip and thigh. Is there a big difference in lengths?
Show me again
What do you mean?
Can’t see red on red. 🤷♀️
Thank you for your feedback. I will do it again and post it later in the week
do you know the name of the type of fabric you have used for this cuff? :)
I think it was a white cotton shirting fabric…are you in the UK?
@@SewMrsBee thank you, it looks awesome! sadly not in the UK
@MarsGamble oh that’s a shame, I was just going to tell you where I bought it! Thank you 😊
Thank you so much for this step by step video. I didn’t have a clue with the pattern instructions but watching this I now understand what I need to do. Not sure I’ll be as quick as you though 😊thank you
Glad to be of help…it is sometimes easier to see how to do something rather than read it. I have been using this method for almost 30 years that’s why I’m quick 😊. Thank you for commenting- Happy Sewing 🧵
Wonderfully explained . 👏
Great video, thanks!
Thank you 😊
Excellent videos. I came across your platform this morning, really helpful. Thank you. 🙃
Aw thank you! It is so kind of you to take time to comment. Happy Sewing 😊
Thank you so much! This was so helpful!
I’m so happy it has helped you! Happy sewing x
Thank you mrs. Bee . You are loved
Thank you 😊
Do you know if these come in imperial sizes?
Hi. Yes they do you can buy them from Morplan: www.morplan.com/gb_en/patternmaster-pro. I am not sure if they ship overseas though.
This scal how prise
Sorry I don’t understand?
This is so great. Thanks!
That’s so nice to hear! Happy sewing 😊
I’ve never heard of a whopper popper!
Sorry it’s a costume terminology/slang phrase just meaning big! 😃
@@SewMrsBee Is it a big ‘snap’? Like, the type of fastener?
@@SewMrsBee My wife is Irish and sometimes I can’t tell if English or Irish folks are just making up words to mess with other English-speakers. ☺️
@AVspectre yes!! I think they are also known as snap fasteners 😃
@@AVspectre 🤣🤣no I didn’t make it up I promise 😊
Hi! Thank you for your amazing videos. I just found your channel two days ago and i have binge watched, learning so much🥰👏 I was wondering if this would work in the opposite way also making a smaller size? And thank you for teaching us all your tricks ❤💪✨🪡✂️
Hi! Thank you for your kind words! Yes I think it would work in the same way to make a pattern smaller. You would need to reshape the areas where you have cut the pattern but I think it would work. As with making a pattern bigger doesn’t always mean it needs to be longer (although it did in my demo) don’t assume that making a pattern smaller (in width) means it will also be shorter. Does that make sense?!! Glad you are enjoying the videos - happy sewing 😊
This has saved me time. Much easier than some other methods. Do you have a similar method for a welt pocket that hides all the top stitching that is just as easy?
Hi glad the video was helpful. The only way I can think of is to hand stitch the welt at each end instead of by machine - does that make sense? (And is that what you mean?)
Thank you for this walk through. I didn't even realize that there was a proper orientation for when drafting. Now I know one of the reasons why I struggled the last time.
It’s not really explained in any book and makes sense when you think about it but if you don’t know you wouldn’t do it. It’s the same with bodice blocks too draft them sideways on (centre front nearest to you). Happy Pattern Drafting 😊
Thank you so much for this demonstration. I'm trying to follow pattern directions and I was completely confused. This makes so much more sense. Thank you!
Glad to be of help. Pattern instructions are often confusing I find! Good luck with your sewing x
Now I can do welt pocket thank you so much good teacher I need your no please I need to learn more
That’s great news. Glad to be of help x
Thank you for this video!!!, this will be super helpful next time i try this!, and i had no idea people sewed the cuff on before they sewed the fabric for the arm closed...this makes a lot of sense ...i had been wondering, since the sewing machine's base is so thick even with the "armhole mode" mine has, now i know what to do when i am making something small with a thing like this.
I am so glad this video has helped you! Happy Sewing!
This is the most basic version I've seen on how to make a welt pocket. Thank you. I appreciate that you demonstrated the procedure a 2nd time.
Thank you Nancy! Glad it has helped! I think basic is good - no point in making things complicated 😊
The most understandable tutorial I’ve come across! Thank you.
Thank you! What a kind and lovely comment, glad to be of use
Thank you very much! I particularly like that you said using a zipper foot is potentially superior to a piping foot because the tightness isn’t brilliant with the latter. Thanks!
I am so pleased to be of help to you! Thank you for the comment.
Brilliant! Saved me from buying a piping foot. Shall use my zipper foot instead. Thank you so much.
Glad to be of help! Happy Sewing
Which styles can be classified as easy fitting apart from kimono, raglan and shift dress
Hi Grace. This is a basic easy fitting block that can then be adapted into the styles you mention, but it also means you can then adapt the neckline, move the darts and create simple tops, bodices, dresses and in the case of this one - I adapted it to become a simple jacket.
Just to add to my previous answer - the 'fit' of any block you create is dependant on how much ease is included. This is 'easy fitting' meaning it is not a tight fit and will provide more of a casual style. Hope this helps.
Thanks for this video, I have recently started to be interested in pattern making and got myself the book from Aldrich. I am glad I have found a video on how to use the book. Watching you tells me I have done everything correct. Watching you to use the pattern maker convinced me to purchase one as well. One tool for all the work to be done. I am looking forward to it.
That’s great news! The plan is to do some more drafts from the book and demonstrate adaptations. Happy pattern drafting😊
@@SewMrsBee looking forward to that, especially the adaptations.😊
Thank you for your detailed and clear instructions.
You are welcome! - glad to hear it makes sense
Exactly what I needed, thank you! Very clear and simple instructions.
Glad to be of help! Thank you for the feedback too - much appreciated
I really appreciate that you demonstrated this using a real garment piece rather than a sample square of fabric; it makes the concept easier to follow when it's in context.
Thank you. I agree that when it is a sample it doesn’t always make sense. Context is really important
I have watched numerous complicated videos on how to make a welt pocket. Your video is by far the easiest way to do it. Thank you for making this video!
Thank you that means so much. I am at some point going to show another way but it is a little more complex
Thanks plan to try this on my next project
That’s great to hear - post a picture when you do. Thanks
This video is really clear and helpful thank you, your narration makes it all make sense 💕
Would you mind sharing the title of the book you're using? I've been trying to find a Hussar pant pattern and your video has been the only genuine lead I've found, thank you for posting!
