2022 Peugeot 308 GT diesel review - Third-Gen 308 is the best one yet!

  • It not only has one of the best looking bodies in its class, but the new Peugeot 308 drives well, has plenty of tech and the range of engines is what the market is looking for right now, with the most potent power plants being plug-in hybrids. I drove a top spec 1.5-liter diesel in GT trim and found lots of things to like about it, one of which was the way it handled a twisty road. It really makes me sorry that Peugeot decided against making a 308 GTi hot hatch based on this third generation of the model, although the manufacturer could make an all-electric hot hatch down the line...
    *small correction: there IS still a wheelbase difference between the hatch and wagon versions of the new 308 (the load-lugger is still longer both in terms of wheelbase and overall length), but the hatch does offer more rear knee room than in the previous version of the model.

    I started with that kind of steering wheel and now its my life, dont want to go to bigger steering wheels. Good control indeed.

      @OneTireFire  Рік тому

      Well, you should try a more traditional wheel setup before declaring it good :) Sure, the Peugeot solution has its advantages, but a more old school wheel has its upsides too.

      @@OneTireFire Was glad to get shot of my e2008 with the many issues i had and of course the steering wheel design fault..looks like still not fixed on the 308 but i think i read somewhere they have redesigned the virtual cockpit now for the e308 due to complaints although could have been another future Peugeot model. I like the idea of the diesel 308 (suits my needs) but need a test drive to confirm the steering wheel issue is still there and to test suspension setup on the diesel.

    This hatch looks like a great contender, Peugeot design is miles ahead of the basic interior in a top seller here such as corolla.

    • @OneTireFire
      @OneTireFire  2 роки тому

      Yes, no other rival in the segment is as nice to look at and special to be aboard of, although I think the Corolla that you mentioned is actually pretty cool too, at least the latest version of the hatchback sold here in Europe. I mean in the US it's even available as an all-wheel drive hot hatch, so credit where credit's due :D

    It's very interesting that they are using a 1.5L diesel - seems far too small for my liking. I live in Australia and have a 2012 2L HDi Diesel. In Australia the diesel options were 1.6 or 2L. No-one recommends the 1.6L for Australian conditions. The 2L diesel engine is the best engine put into Peugeot (and I have spoken to the best Peugeot Mechanics in Australia). It has plenty of power and no mechanical issues. (mine only has 150,000kms on the clock). Plenty of room in the back. Handles well. Fuel economy is 5L /100kms on a trip (and I drive pretty hard). Around the city I get 7 -7.5L/100kms. Very comfortable driving position and it has the old style steering wheel. Great car - will run it into the ground as the newer style engines haven't been perfected yet.
    PS- for those European readers, Australia's emission laws are not as strict as Europe, hence the use of diesel engines. They work really well in Australian conditions.
    Thanks for the review but I think I'll keep my 2L diesel.

      I’ve driven all predecessors right down to the 306 (which had a 2.0HDi engine) and I can tell you this new 1.5 is really strong for what it is. Not up to the performance level of a modern 2 liter diesel engine, but about as quick as a 2 liter from a decade ago. I actually really liked the engine and with the eight speed gearbox, it really does a good job of using all the available torque - i actually liked the powertrain, to be honest.

    Saw interesting comments on another video comparing the new 308 to the new Astra (Opel) and mentioning the front and back of the new 308 has virtually no protection as no bumper hence the radar behind the badge on the 308 is not protected in the vent of a bump /crash. Also the matrix headlights on the Astra are apparently much better quality than the 308.

    Thanks v helpful review. As a 2l GT mk2 308 driver I am nervous about going down to 1.5L but I need an SW and would expect an 8 speed diesel to return better economy than my 2l though did just get 6.6L p 100 on 2300km drive London to Alps and back.. Not a fan of hybrid so will deffo test drive one of these. Thanks A

    cool video. but your seating position is wrong. You should sit more upstraight. like in Rallying, lol, then you see the dash with no problems. Most of people sit in a car like in their TV furniture at home...

      @OneTireFire  3 дні тому

      @@rattlestream hey, thanks for watching! I don’t think it’s my seating position, though. I actually sit pretty upright. It’s just that this car forces me to drop the steering wheel lower than I’d like. I still think it was pretty dumb of Peugeot to force you to look over the wheel at the dials. Cool car otherwise.

    • @rattlestream
      @rattlestream 3 дні тому

      @@OneTireFire no thats not dumb. In Gt cars on racetracks you have the dash right above the top of the wheel. I am a Sim Racer and my seating position is the same when racing and when i tested the 308 i remembered the smaller wheel, the dash above the wheel and the wheel i can pull to my body from my sim racing position! @@OneTireFire problem is that people are lazy and want to cruise laying in their cars. SUVs are better for them. In a gt sporty car you sit more upstraight. Thats not so comfy, but correct. And then you see everything 😉
