The 300 Royal Bodyguard were under the command of their captain Dienekes who in turn were under the overall command of King Leonidas totallying 302 Spartiates in all. 299 remained in total after The dismissal of Aristodemes, Pantites and Eurytus. Eurytus however after returning and dying in battle counted towards the overall number of Spartan dead culminating to 300. The term 300 is not a reference to the overall number of Spartans present in the battle and last stand as a whole but is instead a reference to the overall number of Spartan dead during the campaign.
@@zedheadfulInteresting, from my understanding of the greek classics there were 302 Spartiates in total of which 300 died at Thermopylae. I am assuming like many that you are counting Dienekes as being part of the main body of the 300 Spartan royal guard? If so Dienekes was a seperate commissioned officer holding captaincy during the campaign. The overall force being 301 Spartans when including their captain Dienekes. With 302 Spartans in total when including King Leonidas, with all except for Aristodemes and Pantites dying in battle leaving 300 Spartan dead.
@@seanoshea6544 there were actually 301 Spartans that marched to Thermopylae. no one ever does the math. Leonidas picked 300 hoplites to accompany him. he only picked chaps with sons at home to continue their bloodline. two Spartans missed the sweet death. one Spartan was sent away on a diplomatic mission, the other was one of two that had been blinded by eye infection from the flies that were feasting on 20,000 dead persians. the other Spartan that had suffered this fly initiated blindness fought anyway - having his helot guide him to the line to fight regardless. both the Spartans that missed the death at the hot gates later committed suicide in one fashion or another - one by hanging, and the fellow that had chosen to miss the battle due to blindness ended his life in a battle induced demise by breaking from the line in a subsequent battle and being eventually swarmed by the enemy.
