Could not agree with you more, very good points in all what you said. Except one....being in England it's so expensive to buy from Sideshow. I understand what your saying as you are in the U.S. but I do have a few contacts with Hong Kong where it's so much easier and cheaper to get from them. But years ago before I had those contacts I did wait and and buy from suppliers in the UK. Anyway a great video and excellent points for new and older collector's.
I'm looking forward to collecting Exo6 star Trek figures, the ones from the motion picture & the wrath of khan, and you don't wait long for them to come 👍
I know this video is 3 months old, but man, you literally just saved my life lol, everything you touched on is exactly what I’m going through as someone who is new to the hobby …. The backwards purchasing is killing me lol
Man, this is a fantastic video. We need more of these behind the scenes videos. I'd love a discussion on space management and prioritization if you're ever inclined. Great work!!
I've been collecting hot toys since 2009. I only buy what I really want so I don't have a lot of figures. Keeps my collection under control. I've only sold two figures. Most of my collection is iron man. I did have the Batman tumbler. Thanos end game. Alita.
Awesome video G, the new set up looks great! Not being able to buy everything is the truth. Space is such a huge factor, let alone cost. After a couple of years of buying figures, they really stack up quick. Planning ahead 1+ years is something I had to learn to do (amount of figures in the collection, where they're going to go). Now lets hope the patience pays off and we get that 89 batman and some T2 figures updated so I can finally join in on the fun :) Welcome back!
Great advice. As a new collector, I have learned a few things the hard way. There are a ton of different statues out there. What looks good on a computer screen, might not look so good in person. You should look for UA-cam reviews on statues you are interested in. Most reviewers do a good job of showing both the good and the bad.
I just started collecting in May, 2022 and AND MAN I WISH I started sooner and could've gotten that Darkside Anakin at Retail Price and many other like the Darth Vader pack with Tarkin... But I'm just getting the figures of now that are retail price. Everything I buy is at retail price or under. This hobby is really addictive and from Star Wars fan I even see myself wanting to buy other figures that aren't Star Wars.
Nice to hear another adult collector talk candidly about these things. I've been on and off with HT for 15 years and as you were making every point I said to myself "what he just said you already knew and ignored it anyway and look where you are now". Thank you, I look forward to more videos.
All excellent points, and the truth! I only started collecting late last year (2021) and have collected a lot, and a lot of it was collecting backwards. Probably should've saved more money instead of rushing into it the way I did. I am happy with my collection though, and although I paid a lot over retail for some older figures, I also got some good deals along the way, so I kind of think it evened out. Trouble is, after just about a year of collecting I'm getting close to being out of display space, and I have more figures on pre-order. Love the hobby, but I'm at the stage right now where I'm trying to actually fight that addiction of wanting to buy things, because I really need to. It is a daily struggle lol.
Fantastic advice! Budget! Patience! Curate! Don’t get everything. Look for opportunities to save. Going backwards can be a bad thing as far as the cost. Starting off I knew where to cut off but buying second hand for figures can cost you. Collect what you love ❤️ I started buying Wonder Woman villains but enjoyed because when I play with toys I have a few villains. Do not listen to anyone else! Represent yourself and the joy that the collection brings you.

I have already started saving, and I’ll most likely pay monthly when buying them

Just got into the hobby this past June to motivate me to draw better in order to afford it, made a huge mistake in my first purchase being MoM Dr.strange (thought it said 2022 not 2023). But I've at least gone in with a plan and only saving for/buying what brings joy or tickles the imagination. Could care less what others think of what to collect as all they will see are children's dolls. Not trying to complete sets just for the sake of it is good advice, same with going backwards incase of re-releases (praying for terminator). One thing to mention also is buying from say sideshow there is also an added cost of things like import fee's for those in Canada as well conversion fee's that can quickly skyrocket the cost of this hobby.
Excellent video, and so true. I just recently started collecting with Snowspeeder Luke being one of my first figures. I also mix Sideshow Star Wars figures that I like and the journey is exciting, but EXTREMELY addictive.
For sure! I had t bought a figure for over 2 months and that was the longest I went between figures since I started collecting. Def need to pull back going forward. That snowspeeder luke is a great figure btw!
I'd say, expect re-releases for highly demanded figs (Ironman, batman, troopers) and 2.0/3.0 releases that will 100% drop original releases in value drastically so have that in mind when buying backwards.

I've always collected NECA 7 inch figures but not everything that they release, just the ones i like, mostly predator and horror. But I've got all of the NECA figures I wanted for now so giving them a rest until something sparks my interest. I've just moved over to hot toys and just brought my first figure which is mandalorians ahsoka. Still on the way in the mail so don't actually have it in hand yet. But I will do what you suggest and only buy what I really love and don't need to get every single character from every franchise.. I've been looking around and seen about 6-7 that I really love, but I'm going to hold out and just buy one every month or 2. Hey! I just began my collection journey last month with the dx-19 batman. I just want to ask a question regarding the re-stock in sideshow. I want to buy the Superman from justice league but it says out of stock. Will there be a potential resupply again? Please let me know (:
That Superman figure has been long sold out so I highly doubt it will ever be in stock again. Your best bet is eBay. That DX19 is a great figure to start with btw!
Ebay is good... be careful with resellers and do some research on them. Buy, sell, trade groups are also great. But also, be cautious. There are plenty of great vendors in the states to use.
That's what I'm worried about eBay being scammed because the figure is like 500$. It's just hard to trust based on few reviews. I tried the local toy retail shops but no luck unfortunately.
@@strangelegac381 there are some good one... I purchase hela, yoda, and a darth maul from ebay. You can also wait for inart to release their version and see if you like that one better(which is what im doing) . B/S/T groups also might have it up for cheaper...

No Hot toys for me, pass...
First thing : Don't buy HT figures that have pleather costumes. The always falls apart.
I think room climate has a lot to do with it but I agree, eventually they will deteriorate. I do try to stay away from a lot of pleather materials if I can.
Yeah first hot toys I bought was movie deadpool. Didn’t have an issue with it while I owned but grew disinterested in the figure and sold it. Now I decide I would like to own the figure again I look at listings on eBay and every single used piece has damage in the pleather parts.
THEY and FALL 🙄🙄
@@matthoughton4220 well that was unnecessary !
@@gweilojohn8550 … well that was necessary!! 🤣🤣

As for the addiction aspect of this Hobby and if your better half has an issue with it. I told my wife its cheeper than a covette and much cheaper than an affair, Problem solved.
🤣🤣 that’s awesome! And very true lol
Lol . I collect guns . Not figures that just stand there. And cost over 300 a pice . And what do you do when we in war. They left behind . Guns are better . I'd use them things for target practice
Lol You do you. Not sure why you are watching these videos if you don’t like Hot Toys😂
Grow up most people stop playing with guns aged 7
