  • Fulltone Plimsoul Overdrive & Distortion Pedal - Throwback Thursday
Check it out online at www.fulltone.c...
    Plimsoul
For many, many years you've basically had 2 choices for your Overdrive/Distortion pedals: You could either get "Soft-clipped" Bluesy, slightly compressed, (Toob Screemer, FD2, etc.) type Overdrive pedals... or you could get "Hard-Clipped" (OCD, Distortion+, Boss DS-1, etc.) type Distortion pedals.
What if there was a pedal that offered both? There is now... the Fulltone PlimSoul with it's Patented (US Patent#8471136) and completely unique dual stage clipping circuit which VERY accurately replicates not only the sound, but *the feel *of a tube amp with all of its subtleties and complexities.
PlimSoul has those Softer Bluesey, Compressed capabilities but also has a Second Stage that you can roll in with the turn of a little dial to add that firmer, crunchier, British output tube style Distortion! What's more is you not only hear and feel it... you can SEE the pedal reacting to your every mood via a firey LED that glows brighter and dimmer depending on how distorted it is and how hard you're hitting it.
Touch sensitive? Doesn't get any better.
Clean up with the guitar's volume control? More than any, yes, even more than the OCD.
Speaking of OCD, people ask "What's the comparison?" Easy answer: OCD has an honest flat EQ, won't change your amp's tone. PlimSoul has a gorgeous enhanced Midrange and Lower midrange... excellent to transform a combo into a Marshall-like lead machine, not so necessary if you already have a Marshall-like amp. I use PlimSoul on any combo, I use my OCD on both combos and larger Marshall-style amps/cabinets.
Good with Humbuckers as well as Single coils? Yep.
Does it play nice with other pedals? Yes, it has an Ideal 500K Input Impedance, ideal super low 10K output impedance.
Can I blend the 2 types of Distortion? Yes, and you can have ONLY Soft clipped or ONLY Hard Clipped :)
In a Nutshell? Extremely good Sustain/Feedback qualities, just the right amount of Mids, bottom, Great touch sensitivity, dynamics, and all those in-between shades available when you know how to use your guitar's volume control. I guess I should be flattered, I'm already starting to see pedal builders taking notice and "getting inspired" by the PlimSoul's unique design, which combines independently adjustable soft & hard clipping and successfully emulates the "sag" and other behaviors associated with a tube amp's output section and tube rectifier. With the OCD, I gooped the pcb for 5 years or so to slow them down, but you're now seeing a handful of "OCD inspired" pedals being sold under various names. Now I'm seeing Photoshop renderings popping up from other makers claiming to be developing "emulates output tube distortion" pedals ala Plimsoul. I didn't bother gooping the PlimSoul, but we are well into the Patent process. :)
    Recording set up:
I am plugged into my Fender Super Reverb 65 Reissue amplifier on the clean channel into a Two-Notes Torpedo Live.

Favorite dirt pedal. Never compresses to the point of getting squishy or losing dynamics, even with stage 2 all the way up.

You should do a video explaining why you may or may not keep a pedal on your board, like this plimsoul, great pedal - but you got rid of it - what is it that it's lacking, what replaced it, and why?

I'd also love to hear the response to this...what made you take it off the board, and what did you replace it with? I'm considering the OCD as an option. Already have a reissue TS808 and a Blackstar LT Drive pedal.

Not fair -you replaced iot but wont tell us what you replaces it with. Come on Shane! We still want to know. :-)

Shane!!! How could you possible get rid of this pedal? I've had mine for several years and it rarely leaves my board. Embarrassingly enough, I have almost 60 pedals and I have to rotate them This pedal and the Amp 11 by Lovepedal never leave. Check out the Amp 11, it's stellar!!

I had 2, sold one. Kept the new solid purple one signed by Mike Fuller. I have run mine on the 18v Fulltone power supply & a 9v one spot. To me the 9v sounds better. Nice review!

+ben galvin No. The older on was not signed & it looked. Like the one in this video. Great pedals ESPECIALLY with a SS amp.

@@BillKurzeja is there a difference between the silver pedal and the all purple version? [ I saw an ad on Reverb where the seller called his Purple one a V2 as in 2nd version]

Only a good ear get a nuances and find that this sound ok but better to invest in a good valve amp. Friedmans pedals also dont sound fully as THEY SHOULD. OD ONLY FOR A BOOST

That's a really DECENT OD pedal!

I think it is a great idea of you redoing some demos, I think now you have the torpedo gear that really helps to better appreciate the tone. I have this pedal and never felt I liked the sound of it on a pure clean amp but I just put my amp on the edge of breakup as you did, just a little crisp, and I think that makes for a better platform and I like how this pedal sounds that way. So thanks a lot, this video really helped me to get a better tone out of this pedal.

Great pedal. Marshall stack imitator. Best of both worlds? 2 in 1 ? No. You will start with gain stage 1, and dial in stage 2 hard clipping to your taste. There it will stay, and you are now Angus Young. Can be hissy and noisy. Boss Power Stack St2 does not have this problem. V similar pedals, but I kept the Boss. Price not in it - just a better pedal🌴

Hey Shane, when you say "running at 18V" did you just plug in a 18V DC adaptor to achieve this?

    • @intheblues
      @intheblues  8 років тому +3

Yep. :-) I used the new Caline Power Supply that can do 9, 12, and 18v via different outputs. :-)

Shane thanks for your videos, I have a Mustang III, maybe some time you could do a video on all the aspects of the Expression pedal for this amp. Can't find much on it, I really love the Mustang III, it is so versatile and a ton of awesome tones.

Been in 2 minds whether to add this to my board as Ive got a really clean setup for blues tone, you've helped me decide I should add this with the sustain at 10 and backing off the volume, thanks mate😍

Hey Shane, didn't you change the bridge on the Tokai SG to a TonePros? So its not "all stock"? I may have imagined it...

    • @intheblues

No, only on the Les Paul. The SG is all stock.
