My cars videos: • Electric Scooters, Man... SE is the only trim to offer manual transmission for 2017-2018. The base model L no longer offers stick shift.
Actually I still see quite a number of people driving manuals these days. Driving hard once a while is ok and that's the point of buying a manual car. =)
I live in NYC and there are LOTS of AMERICANS driving sports cars that are manual including myself who is a GIRL. In fact it's getting more popular here in New York because sports cars are the thing here. To make matters worst, we have very few schools here that will teach you, but yet we manage to figure it out. Go figure!
I hate automatic transmissions. Lazy people and people who never experienced the thrill of manual shifting are the reason car manufacturers have done away with Manuals. Huge difference between manual shifting and Tip tronic
Yeah it's all good, but look at honda too, honda won me over in highschool since they're on average lighter and more economical than your average Toyota Corolla and a bit more powerful.
I drive a Mazda3 Sport hatch in manual and the driving dynamics are incredible. I also drove a Civic, Golf, and Corolla but overall preferred the driving and reliability of the Mazda.
Just a little nervous maybe, but I used to "fast" shifting which gives people the impression that I am "panicking". Not sure if I would make more driving video unless I got my hands on another car.
Thank you! Also I just got this car when I filmed this video so I was still learning the car and a bit nervous at the same time. Shifting "normally" will make this car even slower and not as smooth. And lastly, I drove a MX-5 before this so I guess it's a habit lol
CarBricksCity no problem, I’m a bit new to driving stick (about a year). And at least I know that when you drive a different car it takes some time to learn it. Like when I shift my 07 scion tc (still a little new to it) I freaking grab the wheel tight with my left hand and tense my whole body.
hes doing nothing wrong, the gates on the vertical axis are super long, it also loses alot of speed inbetween its also extremly notchy also the gearing of this car at least in the im is stupid they make 1st gear really tall your like 1....2-3-4....6 , there is no reason to use 5th unless hills.
the driver appears to be very nervous and jittery shifting the gear. You can tell he does not drive manual car very often. at 7:53 even missed the gear. the key is to keep calm when you practice. The goal is to get a good feeling of the matching between speed and gear, then shift accordingly as needed, instead of thinking it ahead of time.
I drive manual everyday for the past 5 years. At some point 50 miles per day in heavy traffic. Maybe I was nervous, you can try filming yourself driving a manual. And I just got this car when I filmed this, was stilling getting used to the unforgiving clutch.
You seem like a young driver that's still learning the stick. Kudos for giving it a try, and you're doing well. It might help though to lower your seat and bring yourself closer. It is in all seriousness very dangerous to sit that far from your shifter. Having the shifter (and wheel for matter) that far from you limits your reaction time . Furthermore having to overreach like that destabilizes you, also limiting your control of the vehicle. Seating position might not be that important in an automatic (i.e. like people that like to low-ride in their impalas), but it is paramount in a manual. Take this from a guy who's been driving stick for 12 years. It ain't exactly easy but is very rewarding when done right. Keep it up.
I appreciate the "young" part, but other than that, I found that's the best position for myself. I don't like sitting any closer to the steering wheel. I just got the car when I filmed this and this car is not the easiest manual to drive around, not to mention I was a little nervous. I would recommend you to watch my other driving videos, I have like 10 of them. To be honest I have more experience driving stick than most of the people who criticized me here. I used to drive 60 miles daily in stop and go traffic in many different stick shift cars.
I won’t sit up on the steering wheel either ..... after being hit in the face by a defective airbag when sitting at a stop light I even tell my passengers not to get close to them....they scare me now....so even with my civic being manual I sit away like that too...
Back when my father was teaching me to drive a manual if I was to ever has so much shift gears that hard he would have slapped me in the face right then and there LOL and he would’ve said the original saying take it easy on her she’s a classic hahaha
Pretty sure 95% people would fail the manual driving test in some countries if they do exactly what they do normally. e.g. coasting, not downshifting, etc.
nunca vi una persona q maneje una caja de cambios asi, parece un animal el conductor dios mio.- y asi se rompe una caja de Corolla tendría q ser el titulo.-
What the heck does the position related to new to driving????? Does everyone have to be sitting real close to the steering wheel??? And no, that dude is not new to driving, most likely drive better than the dude above.
I love how you drive in this video. I used to have a preowned 03 Corolla with a manual and it was such a fun car. Based on how well yours performed in the video, I think I might make this my next car if I can find one after grad school 😂😂
You may want to look at the new 2020 Corolla. That one is a huge improvement over this one with intelligent manual transmission (stall prevention and active rev match).
Broooo how do you drive this car? I find it so so so hard to drive it because of the clutch it's very numb and very long I love the car a lot it's comfortable and reliable and quicker than the CTV version but man do I have trouble driving it because of the clutch It gets me very nervous I want to buy this car so much but the clutch scares me so much
I had the same experience back then when I first drove this car. The clutch is not very good and it's hard to control it and hard to find the engagement point. Very numb feeling as well. Easy to stall if you are not careful. But eventually I got used to it. It just takes practice.
U gotta drive Corolla this way or u go extremely slow. Trust me. Plus the engine and exhaust sound loud for normal driving making it seem like ur rally driving when u aint. This car u can do 30mph in 5th gear. 35mph in 6th gear for good mpg but for normal speeds u need 3000rpm for half decent speed on gear change
Nice, I have one automatic, OMG so sad. I had a 2003 Máxima manual transmission what a transmission, the car was so quick, grand Cherokee had paddle shift that really works, now paddle shift with CVT transmission is a show off device. Nice car just sad to not have got a manual transmission.
Looks you have the premium package that includes the push to start (smart key), upgraded 7" Etunes Plus audio and moonroof. The SE has the sport mode button and paddles on the steering wheel which you don't have because yours is a manual
You mean City, highway, or combined? I haven't done a lot of highway, mostly city and mixed and I get around 30 mpg combined. It is rated at 27/35/29 I think. Not sure why everyone said I sit so far back...that's perfect for me, maybe it's the angle.
Yeah, I am seeking over 40 MPG. There is a guy that seemed to get 42 MPH Highway under 70 MPH on the highway on his standard CVT LE model. That is more my needs. I looked at a 2016 Prius C left over for S16,900 today. I just could not handle the uncomfortable seats. I can put up with less power just fine, but I need to see out of a car and get really good mileage as well as it needs to not exceed 15 grand.. plus, the seats need to be comfy. My 92 VW GTI 16v feels wonderful compared to that C I drove today.
CVTs are always rated higher than manuals in the US. But I would say manual has the potential to get higher mpg than CVT by hypermiling. I would say 40mpg is possible if you drive at the speed limit (65mph). I used to drive the Mazda3 and I could get 50mpg highway if I am careful. Let's say the Corolla is 15% worse, then it could still get 42.5mpg.
I took a 5 speed manual Mirage out a few weeks ago. Got 50.9 MPG at 56 mph. For 10 grand I could get a nicely equipped base model. But, if I can accomplish over 42 mpg on a the LE CVT and get the deal of $14,800, I might just move up. I plan some very long trips and some side hussle work like Prime and Postmates. Seeing the dealer also offered the SE for 5 grand off MSRP, I will consider it. It is only like $1500 more than the LE.
djkenny If u can get 5k off the se, definitely get it! se is much better than le. sure u can get 40 plus mpg on highway if u are careful. civic and mazda3 rated higher, but they are more expensive. mirage is the highest rated gasoline car in the US. have u considered the yaris iA? its better than mirage and better mpg than corolla. Also more fun since it is a mazda2. It may be same price as corolla though.
It probably has longer throws than any car on the market (maybe except trucks). The clutch is numb and it was hard to find the engage point at first. It took me a while (and stalling once a while) to fully get used to it.
Would you consider the Yaris iA a Toyota? It was actually a Mazda2 but it's the only other "Toyota" car that has manual. You can also wait for the 2019 Corolla.
Does this car have low end torque like when in first gear and releasing clutch slowly do you have to give gas to get it going or without hitting the gas
Watch this: ua-cam.com/video/LWCXd1SzDas/v-deo.html It has enough torque to move forward on a flat surface in 1st gear without giving any gas but not recommended in regular traffic.
Does your clutch engage like super late? Like only depress the pedal to about 1/4? Interested in the same model when I did a test drive I found the clutch to be engaging a lot later than most clutches
I have tested several other Corollas from 2014 to 2017 and they all have the same high engaging clutch. Hope you like it! You may want to check out the 2020 Corolla, it is a big improvement over the current one with intelligent manual transmission (stall prevention and active rev match).
You are in the US I assume? $10k sounds about right if it is from a dealership. Stall prevention is basically the car would adjust the throttle so that it is less likely to stall when you start going from a complete stop.
From your experience, how does it feel when you try to heel and toe downshift on a manual equipped corolla? I heard from people that the pedal placement on these manual equipped corolla are not that suitable for doing heel toe techniques. Is it true?
To be honest I don't really do heel toe, there's no need for it in a Corolla in daily commute. And yeah the pedal placement on these kind of cars are never intended for heel toe.
Yeah, but when you're in a situation where you drive this thing hard especially through corners or exiting/entering the freeway ramps for instance, the heel-toe does indeed come in handy. So in other words, it is possible to do a heel-toe technique on the corollas even though they're never intended to be designed for it.
I don't know about that. At least I admit I am not professional enough to do that. I would rather not do it than to risk doing it wrong and damaging the car. Seriously I found no instance that I really need to do it in my 6 years+ of manual driving experience. Again, since these cars are never intended for heel toe anyway, I don't intend to do it.
Ok. Would be better if you indicate your country so not to mislead others. Different country is different of course. Some countries don't even have the Corolla for sale.
@@carbrickscity 😂😂😂😂 just kidding, really loved your driving, you know manuals have more power ,they are fast and fun , btw ,i have a driving school of my own also , all manual cars like this corolla, maybe 1 or 2 are automatic
For information you have the 1.6L , a motor by BMW (so noisy !!) , And you have the 1.4L by Toyota (so light for a heavy car like this Toyota...) ... The oldest motorisations was better, but they polluted a lot so I don't know if it's a good think to have a disel motor in this car...
I don't know much about the 1.4 and the 1.6 since we don't have them here in the US. We have the 1.8 here in the US. Modern diesels should be much cleaner than the old diesels. And this car needs the extra torque from the diesel, especially the manual.
I see. If I were you I would test drive both petrol and diesel and see which one you like. I think I would pick the diesel since the petrol lacks torque.
This guys trying too hard. This isnt a muscle car with a muncie 4 speed, your not banging gears in a drag race. Its a fun little commuter though, but get this dude out of it!!
drepop803 I would say its more notchy than smooth as the gears are quite far apart and the throw is quite long (some say like a truck). u can quite easily miss a shift if u are too quick or not careful. The best way to understand is to test drive.
CarBricksCity gotcha! That's what i needed to know. I drive a 2018 WRX and the shifter is very notchy with long throws. My work car is my 5speed focus hatch. The gears on that are just fine. It's been very reliable for me so far and an thinking of replacing it with an even more reliable car like a corolla. But it's gotta be a manual haha.
@@carbrickscity Thanks for the description (ie shifting like in a truck). I recently test drove 2018 Corolla SE manual...and the shifting was WAY different from the manual Chevy S-10 pickup truck I used to drive .. the shifting on the 2018 Corolla was very short...oh yeah...I forgot to tell ya...love the video!!!
You are not supposed to keep the clutch pedal pressed during stops, it will wear out the bearing prematurely. During stops put it in neutral and put your left foot on the rest pedal
Depends on where you are. In US, you may look for a local driving school, find a friend, or even buy a used manual car to learn (although not recommended).
@@carbrickscity local driving school? Yea Sort of on the tight budget Ive been dying to learn my dad told me he wanted to teach me but he sold his audi manual LOL

Ok. Would be better if you indicate your country so not to mislead others. Different country is different of course. Some countries don't even have the Corolla for sale.
good video dam you have a heavy foot put a passenger n look to the side to see you shifts
zabdi zelaya Thanks man! I only have heavy foot once a while. :)
When do you change your Transmission fluid?
Check the manuals.
Does the corolla have Hill start assist?
Yes it does.
😑😑😑😑 what kind of driving is this? Why are you not drifting abit atleast, some skidding and launching, try making the car reach 240 km
I will leave that to u
@@carbrickscity 😂😂😂😂 just kidding, really loved your driving, you know manuals have more power ,they are fast and fun , btw ,i have a driving school of my own also , all manual cars like this corolla, maybe 1 or 2 are automatic
@@mohamedAhmed-kg5qj Nice that u have your own driving school and mostly manual. Here most schools only have automatic
So would u say the 6 speed manual is better than with the cvt?
I am a die hard manual fan so my biased opinion is of course gonna say yes lol
CVT sucks on a corolla
Yes most CVT sucks! Auto is better but manual is even better!
The comment section here is a perfect example of why you just shouldn't post things on the internet.
I couldn't disagree more lmao.
Look at that throw
I know, it's pretty long lol
Do you think the 1.6 d4d (diesel) will be better than this petrol version ?
We don't have the diesel here in the US. I would like to drive it. The diesel should be great for this car since it lacks torque.
The 1.6L is 270nm , but as I said it's a noisy motorisation
I see. If I were you I would test drive both petrol and diesel and see which one you like. I think I would pick the diesel since the petrol lacks torque.
This is manual , i guess it must be feeling much faster than an automatic car
Yes it feels faster but not a lot faster.
Mannnn I cringed at every shift.... chill tf out bro lmao
I just got that car and the throw was very long.
Don’t hold clutch in 1st:… like god damn why. Neutral Hold brake and put into gear split second . Never needed a clutch ever… like ever.
When did I do that? Well I know and I don't do that now.
This guys trying too hard. This isnt a muscle car with a muncie 4 speed, your not banging gears in a drag race. Its a fun little commuter though, but get this dude out of it!!
At least thanks for your afford in comment this relatively old video lol
Well it has a 2zrfe engine
What happen with the screen?? With the radio?
It was a defunct unit.
Would this be a good first car
Probsbly the auto.
You seem to rest your hand on the shifter often. Is that bad for your shifter?
It's a myth. As long as you don't put too much pressure or rest on it for too long, it should be fine.
How's the shifter? Is it smooth or notchy?
drepop803 I would say its more notchy than smooth as the gears are quite far apart and the throw is quite long (some say like a truck). u can quite easily miss a shift if u are too quick or not careful.
I would definitely recommend a test drive. Someone's opinion doesn't equal yours :)
CarBricksCity ofcourse. I always test drive. Thanks for the fast replies.
A mute review of a Corolla, does not make sense.
Read the title, it's clearly says it's a driving video...nowhere does it say it is a review...smh
so awkward , relax man, have some confidence
I agree I am a bit nervous there. I just got the car when I filmed this. Now I think I am much better. Feel free to watch my other driving videos :)
You are not supposed to keep the clutch pedal pressed during stops, it will wear out the bearing prematurely. During stops put it in neutral and put your left foot on the rest pedal
I think I did put it in neutral during stops.
manual seems to be a hell of a job
It's easy once you get used to it but could be very difficult at first.
CVT transmission is standard on all Corolla's
That is correct. You can only get a manual on the SE trim in the US.
Oh here in England there are cvts and full. auto but mainly manual. Theyre called Toyota auris in uk.too from 2005 to 2019.
Interesting.
Always jealous of Europeans.
Slow down boy that's not a miata shifter
The throw is very long which is why it looks like I shifted very fast.
What is the horsepower
132
@@carbrickscity thank you
I want to learn manual don’t know where to start
Depends on where you are. In US, you may look for a local driving school, find a friend, or even buy a used manual car to learn (although not recommended).
@@carbrickscity local driving school? Yea Sort of on the tight budget Ive been dying to learn my dad told me he wanted to teach me but he sold his audi manual LOL
@@Jasongy827 Well you missed a good opportunity. Learning manual without relatives or friend's help is difficult and prepare to spend some money.
Carbrickscity learning a manual from a friend is the best situation?
@@Jasongy827 Family members is best, then friend. But if you can pay, driving school maybe is the best.
