The original set 8880 has been released in 1994. Sadly that time I was living my dark age (life without lego). Now it's been 4 years that I got back in business, dark age is over and this set is weightly responsible for that change in my life. First I was just reading about it on Blackbird page and if you are not familiar with this set I highly recommend to read up on it on the link above.
Long story short I could manage to get one, and as an old school lego fan (being child in the 80's) it straight enchanted me and determined probably my whole life. (hobbywise at least). In the same time I really admired the modern studdless system of lego and it inevitably ended up in the demand in me to build a studless version of it. I've built it first in 2013, but in lack of sources (parts and talent) it wasn't really desirable, nor "smart". Since then I keep rebuilding it time to time and always ends up better and better. According this I wouldn't say this is the last or the best of it, but at the moment this is the stage of its evolution. This is where the name I gave came from.
A few words about the details:
Body:
As you see it I did not use panels but kept the wireframe like appearance as it is one of the benchmark of the original set. Speaking of which I have to admit I did change the shape of the front a lot, even eliminated the concealed headlights due to the feeling that time has passed and it's not cool anymore. But to pay back what I took, I've designed a hood what follows the geometrical concept of the boot. If you listen closer, when the hood opens, the headlights are sliding backward. Rest of the body I think speaks for itself.
Interior: Not much to say about it, seats, dash , keeping the colour scheme.
Gearbox:
Now that is a tricky one. That was the first problem I've been facing with as due to the size of the model I needed a narrow 4 speed gearbox with central differential, but I could not find a decent one anywhere. Crowkillers Paul had the 6 speeder, but it was too wide for my car and Sariel's 4 speeder has been designed for two wheel drive. So I've spent the next month and a half to develop a new one from scratch. I'm hesitating to make a separate video out of it, so if you think I should do so, please let me know in comments. ;-)
Of course if there is a central diff it should be lockable, so it is. And it makes a very compact structure with the gearbox itself what comes handy in modular building.
Steering:
Unlike in the original, there is no ackermann geometry in my model, but please blame lego as it is the field where the part developement goes backward. Anyway the front steering is pretty simple, but for the rear I had to use a rod mechanism, since the compact gearbox left no room for an axle to go trough without compromising the aesthetics. It comes however with certain benefits, as with minor modification on the linking can change the steering lock of the rear wheels. I've applied the smalest as I've found it more realistic. The real life 4 wheel steered cars have only 3-5 degrees on the rear.
Ground clearence adjustment:
No witchcraft, a worm gear and an 8 tooth gear paired up on each wheel to lift and lower the shockers trough an axle. That it.
While in this vid you'll see mostly the version what built according the original colours, on my brickshelf there is a few other colours schemes too. And with time even more should appear.
I hope you enjoyed, thank you for reading and watching and if there is any question, just use the comment section and I'm looking forward to answer it as best as I can.
Keep building! - Наука та технологія
How can somebody dislike that???
Just under the video you'll find an icon depicting a fist with a thumb pointing downwards. Clicking on it is the easiest way. If you don't feel satisfied and wanna go further, you're very welcome to leave a mean comment, preferably questioning my ability, or right to build and post Lego creations.
If your question was rhetorical rather than technical, then you must be just landed recently on our blue marble. In that case, let me greet you in the name of all earthlings, and as things are standing now, I hope you got enough fuel to reach anoher planet that celebrates common sense. :-)
@@Attika best response ever :)
@@Attika best answer ever!
Attika, best response I heard for years!
He put a v6 in it lol
it`s sad and awesome at the same time that the time has come where the most mocs are better than a lot of todays original lego technic sets.
I really think that the first lego technic builders are old enough to appreciate and buy something like a special series called "Lego Technic Legends - Redesigned" - old cult models built in the new, lighter style.
Sth like this had to be a 40 years of Lego technic models!!! And not the crap they made last year....
Really awesome work! Thank you for sharing
See description for instructions :-)
I am working on my hummer moc all day and I saw this. Another restless night. This is soemthing. Quite something.
Thank you. :-)
lego should make throwback sets for these vintage technic cars like this one. nice job!
Absolutely fantastic Lego engineering! That and the attention to details and aesthetics, a source of inspiration and admiration
Wow, thank you. I'll print this and frame it. Goes on my wall. :-)
A well deserved tribute. The 8880 was a great set, pretty advanced for that time
this really should be a lego set
Congratulations on an epic homage to the original! Im very impressed with the adjustable ride height mod!!
I'm first time on your channel, but i'm so amazed by such models! Thank you!
See description for instructions :-)
And still only available in a right hand drive!!! Grrr!
Great build! Love the attention to detail Thanks for the video.
Long time Lego fan.
See description for instructions :-)
Man, you should do an evo, of the evo! With feature like working headlights, remote controlled, etc.
AMAZING build tho :)
This is so amazing what you did there! :-D
I got the original 8880 back in the day, when I was around 7-9 years old and I was sooo proud of myself for building it without the help of others! B-)
I had no idea that it was going to be a pinnacle of Lego Technic in many ways... :O
I just (re)built the 8880 set, after so many years. Great fun :) Your version is friggin amazing! Really, really impressive :)
I love how faithfull it is to the original, while still being completely rebuild. Just got the hubs yesterday so I will definitly give it a try.
Damn this build is cool. And the original 8880 looked surpricingly good considering how old it is
Congratulations that car has everything old Lego fans would wish to get to kinda up to date... suspention, 4wd even ride hight!!!
I still build but only with old tech pieces... hope I get out of My dark age 😁
A truly faithful recreation of the original. Absolutely epic. Love your work.
Thank you. ;-)
I really like this, the original is one of my favorite technic sets, your tribute is beautiful and captures the original look and style of functions used in older technic sets. You did a fantastic job, subbed
Thank you and welcome. Checked your chanel and concluded at least you won't be disappointed seeing those rc lipo's I'm using to power my MOC's. :-)
Adjustable suspension! Your awesome man
See description for instructions :-)
Hey Attika! Been a few years, but I finally got the time to built your amazing model, just finished it tonight and enjoyed every step of the way! I wanna thank you again for the instructions but most of all for designing this masterful tribute! Cheers, Maarten
Hi Maarten, you're very welcome. :-) I'm glad you gave it a chance and even more for being satisfied with the results. But promise me, you won't hesitate taking it apart when -later on- you wanna build something else and you need some parts. Worst thing can happen with lego is get covered by dust. ;-)
@@Attika hahahaha dont worry! I've salvaged a lotttt of sets to built your model! Also I added a simple door mechanism behind the b style with a pushrod to lift the gullwings! Easy but nice addition imo! Thanks again! This will be colecting dust for a while :) i'm now planning to create a platform and backdrop with yellow claws like the 8880 commercial showed!
That is just the coolest thing I have seen this year... AWESOME
I am highly impressed, that is seriously fantastic job you did!
Thanks, I'm glad you enjoyed. :-)
the 8880 was also my first lego technic car *love_it
Great idea! Very nice revival of this legend!
+sm 01 LEGO® custom
Thanks Hot Rod man, I've just seen your new coupe on TLCB. Great looking one.
+Attika :) Thanks! I'm glad you like it :)
Sick AF! Congratulations!
Don't just stand there, Attika; Send your MOC into LEGO so they can make it a reality!!!
Chris Mayer TLG is built on a different business model. Their designers could make something like this if it was fitting in that model. Visit eurobricks, fellow AFOL made a digital version of this if u r interested
See description for instructions :-)
i really liked the suspension regulation :))) now I feel like rebuilding my 8880. Glorious!
0:39 For some reason, the 8880 car looks like the Tesla Cybertruck next to the 8880 evo MOC
this upgrade is just amazing. the 8880 was one of my favorite sets and according to last count i still have all the parts. i rebuilt it a couple times, once to put an lpe in place of the mock engine and servos on the transmission and steering (hobby servos with 3d printed adapters), but it never ran all that well. this one might be good for a brushless motor conversion.
Very very nice. I have the old one but I like your new one more :) Great work!!!
Thanks :-)
this is marvelous... the best studless version I have seen.
THUMBS UP!!!
+parngon
Thanks, it's always good to have a feedback like this.. :-)
Very nice! I love your 8880 evo!

Just getting your attention is an achievement for me, but a like on that is even more. Thank you
Wow! Nicely done!
That gear stick looks so realistic :D
So cool. This needs to be a set. :)
+CONNOR guy
Thank you. Knowing their politics I'm sure it wont happen. Let just be happy with the 42056 even if it will be orange... ;-)
Yes I cant wait for the 42056. It looks ace!
See description for instructions :-)
very impressive
Just...Amazing!! Great job:))
Thank you
Really nice setup you built there!
Awesome video, I really like what you have done with it :)
+All About Lego
Thanks mate. The thing is, in life it looks so much better, somehow the vid just can't give it back entirely. And for this reason I might reconcider my "no instruction" rule, and make one for this... Anyway the brickshelf gallery should be on soon, uploaded yesterday.
+Attika I know exactly what you mean, I have made things before that I think look good but when I upload it it doesn't :(
Masterpiece. Excellent work.
Great hommage to a great model.
Amazing job 👍
I really like the coherence with the old model
Amazing!
Please sell these as a kit!
I want one :(
See description for instructions :-)
I built this one recently and gotta admit, this is great. It kinda works with new 81.6x36R tires (not with a 49294 wheel, any other will do) as well, just need to increase ride height to the max first)
Love this one!
Wow, well done! 👍
Wow. Just wow. Bravo!
Awesome! I love too this set , perfect job!
+DarkBrick Thank you. As I've seen you 're also an 8880 fan. :-)
One single word: masterpiece
will try to build this one but honestly I still like the 1994 model more, built it twice this year already together with the F1 :)
OMG, you couldn't have done a better job! Amazing! (I didn't have the original though)
Thank you :-)
Awesome!
2:31 A perfect Rally car
2:41 My dreams' car
Awesome!!
this is just really well done, worthy of being called a masterpiece
if ihad to nitpick then it would changing out of the pop up headlights with fixed light (idk man i'm just a fan of the aesthetic of pop up headlighs)
Wow!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! This is some amazing talent you got!! great interpretation of a true classic, as many said before me haha! I am gonna try to recreate your version, I need this on my shelf. love this. Subbed.
Thank you. Couple of hints might help in the process of reverse engineering: Gearbox has it's own video and the steering system is roughly the same as in the pickup concept. The rest is on you, good luck. ;-)
Attika thanks alot! haven't seen those vids yet! I'll make sure to check 'em out! thanks for the effort!
See description for instructions :-)
I am officially impressed. Nice work, you should definitely be working for LEGO
this is cool... well done
Cool MOC!
Absolutely epic!!!💘
Crazy set. I want it :)
Marvelous !
lovin your version of this
The ride height feature reminds me of the Aixam Mega Track (search it up; you won't be disappointed). No words can adequately describe this redesign in full, though.
great LEGO set WAY beyond my building abilities (it's crazy good) :)
See description for instructions :-)
You managed to pay tribute preatty well!
+Jan Dvořák
Thanks.
I own the original one. It's still build up in a carton somewhere in the attic :D
Beautiful moc faithful to the original. Please put this on lego ideas. Lego need to see
Brilliant. Sheer brilliance.
Thank you, I'm glad you like it.
that ride hight change is so cool
thats awesome
Incroyable, bravo
You really put a lot of work and thought into that. Kudos to you. I confirm what Simon sais. A lot of memories are attached to the original 8880, i still have mine (too), but man, you really pulled that off.
Getting over peoples nostalgia is an accomplishment.
Did you recommend that to Lego btw? I know not a lot of petitions get really made but this might be worth a shot.
Thank you Tao. No I didn't contact Lego in any way. It would be fairly arogant from me to think that all those designers at the Lego (TLG) can't come up with something advanced like this. Sadly nowadays TLG has a "cap" on complexity of the sets they release due to the fact: they sell toys for kids. Ironically this tendency came from the feedback on the original 8880 back in the time. Since then they don't wanna risk customer satisfaction on the difficulty of the building procedure. Too bad. But that gives us -amateur builders- a gap to fill. ;-)
Is there a possibility for instructions with partlist? Since I saw this video the first time I need to have this model!
:-) Don't have it yet, but I will make instruction one day. Once it is done I'll let you know. Don't give up, just be patient. Cheers
Awsome !
awesome
MEN THAT'S AWESOME
instructions?
Richtig geiles Teil...Respekt👍😁
I'm new to the custom builds with Technic. I own an original 8880, but I would LOVE to build this 8880evo. Where is a good place to gather parts? I don't want to break down my original to do it...
Hey Greg, don't break down the original, it wouldn't help anyway. This model is made of studless type of technic while th original was built with studded (old) technic parts. Here is a link to the site "rebrickable".
rebrickable.com/mocs/MOC-20224/1963maniac/attikas-8880-evo-tribute/#comments
Here you will find the partlist and some offers to buy the parts from bricklink etc. Hope it helps
Just order all the parts on bricklink
it reminds me the childhood
This is fudging cool.
Do you have all parts need in a external file. Or bricklink page for example? Thanks
Awesome . Amaizing. Unbeliveble. You have a lot of skills .
+Ilea Alex Thanks mate. Checked your chanel, you've got some great ideas too. There will be some part mod videos coming soon, I guess you gonna like them. ;-)
Attika :-) i sub to you. maybe sub to my channel too :-)?
+Attika can you do a vid with the gearbox ? i like it very much
+Ilea Alex I promise I will. Just a bit short of time lately.
Attika can't wait
That's crazy, so impressive
Thanks man. :-)
Your an absolute genius , make more , surprise me
Good work takes time, be patient. ;-)
See description for instructions :-)
Cool!!!!
Respect!
Beautiful homage.
+Kelkschiz
Thank you. Actually one of your vid gave me the idea how to make a lightweight frame for my ripsaw using connectors instead of beams. Thanks for that impression too.
+Attika That is very nice of you to say :)
How awesome is that! Imagine Lego would hire managers with few more brain cells to make such a great set happen
How can i buy IT? Your build is incredible. I love it.
I'm glad you like it, sorry for the delay. Sadly it isn't sold as a kit, so therte isno easy way. My best bet is to go to rebrickable and there should be an option to buy the parts (I don't know, as I'm not even a regular visitor there, let alone to be a member). However my recommendation would be to build up a collection of regular sets, and use those parts as a backbone to build moc's like mine. It's gonna get boring after a time, so you can take it apart and build a new one. I suppose you already have some parts/sets or whatever, so just expand your collection. Benefit of buying full sets, that you can sell them later as full sets if you have to, or want to get rid of them and by the time the price of a discontinued set is just rising, so at the and you made money, instead of loosing it. ;-)

I have a question, is the number of laps the steering wheel turns determined by how many 180 degree turns it does?
So:
Rotates 180: 1 lap
Rotates 360: 2 laps
Rotates 90 degrees: 0.5 laps
Great model! Love the adjustable suspension!
Thanks, as I've stated in the video 2.5 turns lock to lock. In your "lap" that means 5. However, let me point out that lap is a synonym for circle, what is 360 degrees in my understanding. Would you educate me, please where this 180/lap comes from?
Attika I just had this feeling that perhaps it’s 1 lap every 180 degrees. Thanks for the quick answer!
Great, I love it, subscribed😍 I will build it. Does it have the Ackermann steering? Best regards from Madrid
Thank you, hope it will live up to your expectations. Unfortunetally the ackerman steering could not be done with these new suspension elements. To achieve them with a custom build would have ended up in a bulky assembly, so I've sacrified it on the altar of practicality. The other functions hopefully will make it up for this shortcoming.
I see potential for motorisation here! And instructions 🙃
I like studdy version because i like to make various spoilers, car additions, and guns(i like zombie apocalypse moc's)
Great, Great, Great 😊 I have my 8880 almost 15 years and in my opinion ist Super. But your 8880Evo its just amazig. Take your Time but PLEASE make instruction 😊 Noch mal Echt Super Auto ☺️
See description for instructions :-)
why did you turn into german?
@@kevinisthieryt543 Multilanguage 😋 Pl / De / En. But Germany is for me easier than English.
bin auch deutsch
You are crazy genius... you better start working with Lego.
I'm affraid they are on a different opinion... But thanks
Well then I guess you are over qualified for Lego. Keep doing whatever you are doing. We are with you.
How come? Did you actually send them a resume? Please do tell!
