I got this set in 1994 as a 21st birthday present. I still have it.
yes it is really awesome set, one of best technica ever .. mainly for its age
I wanted this set since I was 8 years old. Some one bought it from my local toystore a week before I went to buy it, after saving for it for 9 months.
I was devastated. Today, 25 years after, aged 34, I finally got it.
Dear god I savored each and every single piece. And, yes, clearly the complexities of the model are above anything else, and the instructions need you to be super attentive. This is miles ahead of any other technic set of the time, and of probably a multitude of other technic sets.
i fully agree 💯
Interesting so see how the white parts have discoloured the same as mine. Great video and thank you for sharing.
thank you too, yes some colors are more light sensitive - white to yellow, blue to green, grey to .. different shade of grey :)
Got this for Christmas when I was 10. Magical times.
Indeed, I was more into knights at the time .. but it was real joy to play with it :)
Same. How I assembled it at that age I can't remember. Looks super complicated. I have it here, in 1000 pieces, mixed together with parts of other models in one giant crate. Not sure if I should go for it.
Best technic set ever. I was lucky enough to get this as a child 🙏
I unfortunately was not so lucky at that age but .. :)
@@ZIROTCA this statement applies for me for the Test Car 8865 ;-)
Same here, for my 13th birthday :)
I remember getting this I think Xmas 94, I was the whole day building it, marvelling over it after almost ever step, I was in awe at the 4wd transmission and differentials, I took a 25 yr break from lego after 94’ none of the sets appealed to me much after as I was a studded beam fan, 4 yrs ago my wonderful wife got me the Bugatti , this took me four 4hr shifts or more to complete, as much of an incredible build that was I still preferred the 8880, it’s legos own creation, I’ve since bought the test car, Sian and Daytona, the new super cars are masterpieces but the older models have far more magic about them
I fully agree. Btw also my first technic in modern times was Bugatti (also my first lego video here)
I built this so many times as a kid I could build it from memory, got diagnosed as autistic recently so kind of makes sense how now 😂
these days everyone is somehow 'autistic' ... so dont worry about it and live your life with as much joy as you can .. and if u want I have also the B model's video ;-)
As someone who grew up primarily with sets from the late 2000s to today, I completely share your sentiments about this being quite the challenge to build. Instructions from back then definitely don’t spell everything out for like they do today; I actually had to nearly dismantle this set mid-build since I messed up a very subtle piece arrangement early on (step 9, where I mistakenly attached the blue pieces that connect to the wheels upside down). Today’s instructions would have clearly circled such a subtle distinction in red or something, but the old builds really force/teach you to be super observant and attentive. I found the build definitely more challenging/much easier to make mistakes after being “coddled” by the ease of modern-day builds for so long, but it was enjoyable nonetheless; definitely made for a more rewarding experience!
I am happy you agree and also enjoy the old-school sets :-) Btw what is the last set you build recently?
@@ZIROTCA This very set was actually my latest build (as of today), which is why it’s so fresh in my mind haha. Before that I rebuilt my Green Grocer, and also recently built the new-ish 1989 Batwing set.
13th birthday present :-)
I have this model ;)
I don't but wanted or looked at it in LEGO catalogue as a child (to be honest I was dreaming about black&white pirate ship most :))
This one is of a friend of mine who borrowed it to me for filming this video as well as the other one for B-model Formula (that was released few days ago too :))
Mine's also yellow as fuck. White parts are currently in a tub of peroxide.
It was leased froma friend .. but inheard this whitening weakens the bricks
Shame about the yellowing of the white parts in your set! I think you can fix this, somehow.
I have this model, bought from eBay - I had it for my 13th Birthday. Back then it was £75. I bought it for £199 (Lego was used once) and it had the stickers unused, with the box and instructions. Proudly displaying it in my man cave under a perspex display case.
it si nice set, I was not owning it .. just a friend of mine borrowed it so thanks for it :-)
If I remember correctly, this model has not only 4WD, but also 4-wheel steering. This is a very feature-rich set:
- 4WD
- 4W Steering (actual steering wheel works)
- Opening Engine Hood with Catch
- Independent Suspension
- Pop-Up Lights Work via Knob on Dash
- Working 4-Speed Transmission with Stick Shift
- Operating V-8 that Obeys the Transmission Gears
- Technic Figures are to Scale or Very Close (if I remember right)
It's not terribly heavy, compared to newer Supercar sets. It has enough open space, that I imagine it can easily have motors added for remote control.
Really great ..for that era
8v? 😂😂😂
