- I take you guys with me to an EPIC Inlet for a Saltwater Fishing Adventure!! Using crabs, sand fleas, etc, we are on a mission to pull in some GIANTS out of the saltwater!! I did not expect for this to happen..

Felt the same frustration last weekend on those same rocks! Gave up a bunch of gear to the rocks and saw one of those rats as well. When we were there lots of people were out for tog, so many VA license plates in the Indian River parking lot so they traveled but did not see much success.
We use green shore crab in the uk 🇬🇧 too but more often in their peeling stage hence the name peeler crab. Tend to use the hardbacks for Smoothound sharks and Ballan Wrasse (same as your Tog)

i just went tog fishing about 2 weeks ago and its so frustrating, definitely not for the faint of heart (also, don't cast out so far, and try and set the hook on the second or third hit. and you should rig the crab by cutting the legs off, throw them in, cut it in half, take off the top shell on each piece, and rig it through the leg socket and out the lungs so you can have two good pieces and all the pieces you throw them in get them fired up.) good luck in the future!

Hey First State, the Tog are near the Ocean City Jetties. Took a charter and caught 30 of them in 3 hours on white/green crabs.
That inlet is 15 mins away from my beach house in potnets maybe you could go with my fam fishing on our 33 foot grady white sometime!!!!

I remember the good old days at indian river inlet when you could catch 10 keeper sized tautogs in a few hours of fishing. Now its tough to catch more than 1 keeper a day there..

First thing, you need to be pretty much straight up and down, too much scope, the more likely you will get snagged. You need just the right amount of weight to stay in one spot, not too little, not too much. Second, you will get a lot of little taps from little fish. You can usually tell a blackfish hit because they will hit a little harder. John skinner mentions about when to set the hook in some of his blackfishing videos

you can peel the top shell of the crab once the hook is thru the leg. It makes it softer and juicier and tog will eat it all and swim away. Use blackfish jigs you can feel the bite better.
