I picked up bonsai during the beginning of the covid lockdown. A sense of depression and loneliness made me realise that I needed something to put my creativity into, and in that way making bonsai became like therapy/meditation to me. Being in and working with nature is just a great outlet and gives a an incredible sense of being!

In the mid 1980's we moved to California (Mission Viejo) for work and was introduced to Bonsai when I saw one in the office of a client. I bought a few from a local nursery and even though I followed their directions carefully I lost all of them in the first year and stopped any interests. Now a few months ago I came upon your community and realized the loss I had back then was due to the wrong instructions from the nursery and a great deal of frustration because of that. I am recovering now from a quad bypass and have watched hours of your videos. I live in a cold climate now and will have my greenhouse and garden Ready for spring. I have started searching for plants to harvest then and even let neighbours know if they plan to dig up any trees to call me. I think the juniper will be my first now that you have shown me Bonsai belong outside. Thank you for allowing me into your community.

Another great question and answer session, good advice given. You asked how bonsai came into my life, my son brought home a juniper bonsai from a local show ground, he had no idea what todo with it so had a car he wanted so I swapped it for the tree. At the time I had a very stressful job so it helped me relax, over the years the collection has grown as it would with most, due some illness at times I had to sell all my tree so I was unable to care for them, as I got better health I would start again, this happened twice over the years. When my wife passed away in 2017 it was a very traumatic time as you would expect it was bonsai that pulled me through getting me up in the mornings to look after the trees I owned they relied on me for survival. So bonsai has played a big part of my life, now at 81 I have a lot more time to devote to my hobby my hobby and keeps me active both in body and mind although my memory is fading now. Thank you for your videos.

30 years ago working at an old man’s house i seen his trees in the back yard an asked him what they were. Bonsai he said which looks nice to me. Time went by the i seen them on the karate kid once again sparking interest but didn’t know what and how to do it Then youtube turned up which gave me some knowledge of what to do and now the slow race is on. 😉👍

Feeling of Zen and solitude makes Bonsai very comforting. the initial investment in quality tools can be prohibitive, but regular tools work. i'm definitely in for the long haul to find the hidden beauty in my works.

I think of Ficus as a very versatile tree that’s fairly easy to work with. I would never keep them the house

I started shared my journey with Bonsai in the 1980's here in the UK. When I had to relocate to another city I took my Bonsai with me but as I was living in a converted two storey house and I had the second floor I had nowhere to keep the trees in the shared garden and ultimately they were all stolen with the exception of a very large Japanese Larch. It was not until the Covid lockdown here in the UK that I began to watch some Bonsai on UA-cam. I am now a few months short of being 70 years of age so now I just look around garden centres for prospective trees although I have a small collection of Japanese Maples grown from seed and a few Satsuki Azaleas I bought from a Bonsai nursery along with some Fuji Cherry trees that have lots of lovely blossoms in early spring. I may not see the now 3 year old Maple {DESHOJO } seedlings grow to maturity but I think in a few more years they will make nice small Bonsai specimens.
I do like watching your video's and think they are very informative especially on the clip and grow method.

So growing up, I watched the karate kid, it made me think, bonsai were pretty neat. Then I started watching herons bonsai, and shortly there after, about a year and half later, I found your channel. I just feel like, they calm my anxiety, or watching you guys talk about them, it’s soothing in a sense, like watching bob ross paint. Any of them interest me, but the ones I like the most are ones that produce white or pink, like azalea’s

    Haha, love the intro!
As a kid I saw a bonsai in a movie and I liked how it looked. Since then I always wanted to have bonsai but I thought that bonsai are a specific type of trees which are super expensive and grow like they are on their own. Five years ago I started researching and found out that my understanding of bonsai is totally wrong and was pleased to find out that I can take any tree and make it bonsai and it doesn't need to be expensive.
I like that it's like working with nature as a team to make something cool and that it teaches you vision, patience, adaptation, understanding and trust-in-the-process.

Hello Mr. Chang I am a novice at Bonsai and I have a question for you. Do you rotate your bonsai or do you keep them facing the same way all year round? Is it beneficial to do so? or does it really matter at all? Thank you Sir have a good evening.
