I went out yesterday on a yamadori adventure, i found 3 small trees that i dug up and carried back in My backpack. I just don't know what kind of trees they are but they were pre-bonsai in nature with some very interesting trunk movement and plenty of branching. I can only imagine what people driving past me thought seeing a ton of branches and leaves sticking out of my bag 😂
Focus on a few trees to learn how to do them well, vs many so so bonsai...Experimenting with variety of tree is good...and tell us your results...so we learn...Take leave size into consideration for scale consideration. Having an interest is a great start!
I try to get each one to it's full potential at least how I view them. I also like having each tree look unique (for better or worse I guess) but collecting trees is a borderline addiction at this point so I just roll with whatever each one throws at me.
When I was younger, my favorite location was a day's hike from my base camp, In the California mountains. It also needed a harvest permit. Very worth it. It normally needed at least two years to prep the trees. The better trees were in deep crevices and need time to grow new feeder roots. I would get a few looks and an occasional pre-Karren. Good times.
I’m seeing some very full and beautiful trees. I like the trunk sizes in them. Your work on roots “early” is enlightening and informative. Too many times I have forgotten to work on them as they are initially growing into their bonsai potentials. Thank you my friend.
Thankyou again! This was a very informative video. I can see the future in your thinking and planning. This was the one I have been waiting for. Now to plant one in my yard and wait a few years. Then cut the top off and chop it up and watch my imagination grow
Still can't wait for the elm tree that I won from Milton. I currently have (all nursery stock) 2 wisteria- one is Amethyst Falls (American) purple that needs constant pruning because all it wants to do is grow. The 2nd wisteria is just labelled "Blue". I have no idea if it is Japanese or Chinese because it hasn't grown at all. It thrives but just doesn't get any bigger. A couple of Japanese maples that are definitely different species just by the shape of their leaves that I will leave alone until next spring. By far my favorites so far are 2 boxwoods that I bought on sale. I've already trimmed both and put the smaller one in a bonsai pot. It already had exposed roots when I bought it and looks very good in it's new home.
You have a great start. Let the trees grwo a while so it can thicken the branch more. You are not giving up much by doing so. ...maybe less reminfication.,

Do you think you might include more information such as when is best to perform this type of work on the material you are working on and why? Training and design development is very important but again so is the horticulture side of things. Just a thought.
The best time is in the fall or in the spring if you live an area that freezes. I can do that all year round because the weather here is mild, I cut off branches drastically to compensate for root loss, and my trees are well developed before I work on them. Have fun!
The figs are large but not very sweet...Many of the commonly available once are pretty good. They need hot weather...A good thing is squirrels do not get them because either black or green, So I encorage to get one from your local nursery.
