The Family of blood story is also a good one. He deliberately led the aliens to a small quiet English village, knowing he was putting it at risk in order to hide.
At the end the woman his human form falls in love with says "If the Doctor hadn't chosen to come here, would so many people have died?"
Fucking brilliant. Although I guess he does somewhat redeem himself by saving the 2 boys by warning one of them of their deaths at the First World War, leading to one of the greatest ending to a TV episode I have ever seen.

The Doctor is indirectly responsible for the deaths of the 4 innocent (well, 3 and a little shit) people who are taken over, plus the people they end up killing themselves. I was happy to see Jessica Hynes character call him out on it. Agreed that it's one of the best Who episodes out there (only complaint being Father of Mine's actor being criminally underused).

In the very first episode"An Unearthly Child" The 1st Doctor practically kidnaps Ian and Barbara by Starting the TARDIS while they are still inside so they can't tell anyone about him or the TARDIS. Even though no one would of probably believed them and The Doctor and Susan could of easily located to a different country, time, planet etc. Kidnapping two people is generally a very dick move.

Always gives me chills to think that if the doctor didn't take the fluid link and go into the dalek city with susan and the gang, the daleks wouldn't have gained knowledge of the larger scope of the universe and would have remained on Skaro. Later stories I do think contradict this point and the daleks exploring the universe was inevitable, but I think it would make the doctor dalek relationship more fascinating I feel if it were true.

The Doctor doesn't ignore Martha. Quite the opposite. He does, in fact, compliment her regularly. Like:
“Very good point. Brilliant, in fact. What was your name?” (Smith and Jones)
“Oh. Oh, Martha Jones, I like you.” (Shakespeare Code)
“Oh, Martha Jones, you’re a star.” (Lazarus Experiment)
    “Thank you.” (42)
“Thanks for looking after me.” (Family of Blood)
“Thank you. Martha Jones, you saved the world.” (Last of the Time Lords)
    -----------
"No matter how hard Martha tried, she couldn't get the doctor to truly notice her."
Thing is, Martha never understood from the beginning that the Doctor was never going to develop romantic feelings for her like he did with Rose. You can tell from the fact that right after he made that clear, she teased him about the genetic transfer (from when he kissed her to distract the Judoon). The Doctor told her from the start that they would never be together romantically, and Martha chose to believe she could change his mind, probably because she interpreted the situation as the Doctor getting over a breakup and figured he just needed time to get over Rose.
Martha had a difficult go of it. She got in the TARDIS with a man grieving for his lost love, and she didn’t realize the full truth of that until nearly the end of her travels. Her unrequited feelings suck for her, and it also sucks that the writers made almost every one of Martha's major character moments be about the fact that the Doctor didn’t love her back. When Martha is so much more than the girl who pined for the Doctor. She is clever and badass and a caring friend. They should have focused on those things more.
Admittedly, I do understand enough about intersectional feminism to get that a black woman playing the love interest is actually a breakthrough. Women of color are not often shown as objects of romance in media. They have to be the strong female friend instead. But. Martha was not written as a love interest. For her to be the romantic partner, her feelings would have to be returned by the lead character, and they were not.
None of Martha’s struggles that stemmed directly from her feelings for the Doctor are his fault. I'll digress that perhaps, when he realized that against his warning she had developed feelings for him, he should have sat her down and talked to her. But he did warn her off from the start, so I don’t know how it can be said that he did not do enough in that regard.
Hell, Martha herself doesn’t blame the Doctor for her feelings or for not returning them. In her speech before leaving, she doesn’t say, “You made me feel second best.” She says she spent a lot of time thinking she was second best. She takes ownership of that thought. And after explaining the parallel situation with her friend, she doesn’t accuse him of never seeing her like that. She doesn’t say it like he did anything wrong. She just says that she needs to get out.

    • @tashevans3940
      @tashevans3940 4 роки тому +2

Karen Page couldn’t have said it better myself, she was constantly in rose’s shadow and she wanted the doctor to notice in a romantic way not a friend way. I will say the doctor was giving her mixed signals throughout but I don’t think they wrote her very well. If they wrote her as more as a doctor and more independent/ sassy might have liked her better. Too much infatuation from her side it was a little annoying to say the least.

In the 2005 Children in Need Special (the one where Rose took time away from grieving and fearing for The Doctor to bleach her hair) it's explained that The Doctor left Jack behind because he had to rebuild the Earth at that point. The Doctor could have explained this of course and on the surface, yes it was a bit of a dickish thing to do but it was perhaps necessary.
Also, I'd argue his treatment of Mickey was actually worse than his treatment of Martha, at least with Martha, you could put it down to emotional irrationality after losing Rose. The Doctor was just horrible to Mickey for literally no reason.
Honourable mentions should be; The Doctor brushing Graham off when he tried to talk to her about his cancer, The Doctor selfishly trying to stop Amy from being zapped back in time to live out her days with her husband and The Doctor taking Ian and Barbara against their will.

There was an episode with The Family, in the early (20th century, when the Doctor initially concealed himself in the guise of a teacher in a school. For one thing, Martha is stuck working as a maid in a backwards era. At the end, he eventually turns on the Family, inflicting some pretty nasty fates upon all of them.

  • @joshuacurphey3242
    @joshuacurphey3242 4 роки тому +7

    Oh, come on:
    10. He had just regenerated. I would've forgiven him for that. Besides, Colin Baker hadn't been treated all that well by the BBC.
    9. When Sarah Jane later told him about what he'd done, he did ask if Aberdeen was next to Croydon. And maybe he may have been in somewhat of a hurry.
    8. Considering how rubbish 13 was, I'm not really sure I can defend her all that much.
    7. I admit that the 7th Doctor had become quite manipulative, but he was just trying to get Ace to face her fears.
    6. He spoke about Rose a few times and he did state that he did like Martha when she when he were in the Globe Theatre and decided to expand their "one trip" with one in the past and one in the future and saved her life in 42. He also thanked her for looking after him in The Family of Blood.
    5. The 5th Doctor openly stated that if he tried to return Adric home, it could've been dangerous. But after Tegan convinced him, the Doctor decided to at least look at the coordinates Adric had calculated. And after Adric helped the Doctor stopped the Cybermen from destroying Earth with that bomb, the two made things right with each other and the Doctor offered to take Adric home if he wanted to (though Adric did state - as you said - that he didn't really wanted to leave).
    4. Well it was a fixed point in time.
    3. He'd just been pushed quite a bit too far. And he didn't stay like that forever.
    2. Although manipulating his companions may have been not a such good move back then, at least he confessed to what he'd done and helped free the Thals from the Daleks.
    1. He did tell Jack that he had become a fixed point in time and that he wasn't sure he could stand him and that the T.A.R.D.I.S. wasn't all that fond of Jack (although he later offered Jack to travel with him).
Also, maybe the way he treated Mickey might not have been called for, but Mickey was somewhat of a nervous wreck back then and later gained some respect from the Doctor.

The biggest Doctor being a dick moment for me:
In _The End of Time,_ his narcissistic rant telling the trapped Wilf how unimportant his life was while whining about his _own_ life being so much more valuable. I hated Tennant's Doctor in that scene. Nine didn't whine and have a tantrum when Rose was burning up as Bad Wolf, he just went ahead and made her safe _knowing_ that it would kill him. It really disgusted me to hear Ten talking to Wilf like he was worthless, and was the complete opposite of the Doctor's normal attitude that _everyone_ is important. I know that, after he'd stopped his self-important crying, he mellowed and told Wilf it would be his honour, but that's not good enough.

There is a small touch to that scene that I see. Maybe its just me playing devils advocate. She is clearly shown time and again to be socially awkward which the doctor has been before but also aware of how socially awkward she really is which the doctor hasn't really ever been. As such, she would know that just saying the first thing that came to mind would likely do more harm than good (a mistake I make repeatedly). So taking a minute to find the right words is a kindness and admitting that is what she is doing tells Graham that she does care and that she doesn't want to say the wrong thing.

Not only did he strangle Peri, but he didn't go back and save her once the trial was over. The Timelords told him that she was rescued, but he didn't at least pop in to check in on her after she'd gone through quite an ordeal, and that's assuming we believe the TImelords. So it's entirely possible that he left her to die. Apparently there is a Big Finish audio that clarifies this, but I've not heard it so I can't say for sure. However, given that The Doctor can travel back in time, unless a companions death is somehow a fixed point in time, it's rather bizarre that they've had any companions actually stay dead. They could have saved Adric or any of the others that have died on their watch, even Ryan's nan.

Granted, the 13th Doctor has been warm, friendly, and kind to everyone, so her suddenly saying “I’m socially awkward and don’t know how to respond” is inconsistent with her character. The TARDIS fled from Captain Jack in Utopia, not the Doctor. Thats why it went to the end of the Universe, it was trying to get away from him. And according to the special between Parting of Ways and Christmas Invasion, he left Jack there to help clean up the mess.

Someone clearly did a quick google search for this 😂 A lot of its taken out of context: 7 was manipulative, but this was the start of huge ark where he was testing her or Sarah in Aberdeen was mistake as the Doctor always struggle to pilot and clearly didn't look back because it was too painful. Plus with Adric not the trip back to E-Space was really risky...

2:00 This was explained in the new run. The Doctor has very little control of the TARDIS. The TARDIS noise is because he doesn't know how to drive it properly. She should be glad he didn't leave her in Ireland.

You could make a separate list for each doctor on this topic. It's the character trait guaranteed to cross over between them.

In one of the episodes of "An Unearthly Child (or 10000 BC or whatever we're supposed to call it these days), The Doctor stands over the injured body of one of their party with a stone in his hand, apparently considering cold blooded murder so they aren't slowed down by this "burden".

    Literally not true.
While, yes, he does initially tell Adric he's not taking him home (he believed it to be far too dangerous), you have to remember the two were in a very heated argument. In episode 2, when they all calmed down, the Doctor tells him that if Adric can plat a satisfactory course, he'd be willing to give it a go. Adric spent almost the entirety of episode 1 plotting said course AFTER he said he wanted to go back home. The Doctor even asks Adric if he can study his notes, before Adric says he doesn't really want to go home. The Doctor then gives Adric his notes back.

honestly if their genders were reversed, everyone would've called Martha an incel. and I know it, because basically such a thing did happen in another movie which I watched and yet in there, everyone treats the female character like a victim and in here the doctor is guilty

I have to disagree with your reasoning of Tenth's reason for trying to ignore Jack. It's not that The Doctor felt the situation was "confusing", it's that he could see that Jack was an anomaly. You have to remember that The Doctor, as a Gallifreyan, doesn't see time in the linear sense like we do. He can see every moment of a being's life and death all at once. If something isn't right in the sense of time, such as Jack's immortality, it's something that wrong with everything he knows... and that's a terrifying and horrific thing for him... and he knows there's nothing he can do to help Jack...
It's like if you looked at someone and you could sense there was something off about them... like smelling the colours of them, and tasting the sounds they make. Something so comprehensible to our limited view on things.
You really can't blame him for not wanting to be around someone like that. It's not like he could even talk to any companions about it either, as it's not something they can perceive... so he has to bottle it up, and could only talk to Jack about it.

I agree on the facts of the situation, but it's still no excuse for leaving him behind. If nothing else, he could stifle those feelings long enough to bring Jack back home. It's like actively avoiding someone with a genetic disorder because they're ugly. We wouldn't consider that behaviour justified, even if it's a natural reaction from internalizing contradicting image standards all your life.
Besides, the Doctor exalts difference: who if not they could be expected to find beauty in the temporally "ugly"? They'd probably roll with a person with an aura of synesthesia too, at least if they were being written well.

@@AstraIVagabond Don't get me wrong... I don't agree with The Doctor's actions on the situation at all, and do agree with what you're pointing out. I was just stating that they had a flawed argument as to why The Doctor did it.
If his reasoning is as you describe, it's a pretty bigoted reason for not helping Jack... but like other examples, it shows that even Time Lords aren't perfect beings, no matter what they say about it. They're still as flawed as any human is... they just live longer than we do.
