You are more than welcome for the shirt and CD, Randi!! That particular Abigail shirt is my favorite because it does have the album title on the sleeves, so I'm glad you liked that! It looked good on you too! I'm really glad that you enjoyed the live performance! This song in particular really points out that, while King Diamond (the man) has a very unique vocal performance... He still has the ability to make his voice very appealing (dare I say beautiful) on the high notes when he wants to. The guitars, bass and drums are top notch as always, and the change ups are really good in this song as you point out. This song is from the Conspiracy album. I won't go into album spoiling detail, but King Diamond has lost his sister Missy in this song. He is suffering with the sadness of losing his sister, and is slowly descending into madness at this point in the album, and ends up making a deal with some dark power to see his sister again. They only come at night though, hence the "Sleepless Nights". Thank you for reacting to this, and I hope all my fellow Better Every Day fans enjoy it!!
I cannot sleep at night.... these simple words are so effective and evocative to start a story. The sudden acoustic transition has always given me the impression of a window opening onto something else, the break is so clear, even live. One of his most inspired moments, at least in my opinion. It is notable that in this live show he is 59 years old and has had a heart attack! In an interview he said he had to learn to breathe again. Lots of hard work and maybe a few invisible friends on his side... Your approach to listening is beautiful
Lyrics for those interested... I cannot sleep at night That's what the day is for anyway And as the clock strikes midnight I hear "THEM" dancing at the graves Singing to My mind Killing the pain... sleepless nights... sleepless nights I cannot sleep at night That's what the day is for anyway And as the clock strikes midnight Only "THEY" can let us meet Even though she's dead now I gotta see her again... sleepless nights... sleepless nights (Guitar solo ANDY, Guitar solo PETE) I cannot sleep at night I will do anything to see Missy again "Then let us make you an eternal deal You will attend to the graves You'll give us the house back and keep in mind That we only come here at night" So we made the deal under the starry night and "AMON" belongs to "THEM" now... I feel the dawn coming My way And as the sun breaks up the dark I can't hear "THEM" dance no more There's no voices Killing the pain... pain... pain
King Diamond's album "Them" is another concept album. The flow of each track tells the story of an old woman returning home from an insane asylum. It's super dark and evil and arguably as good as Abigail
Wow. Gifts from fans. That shows how well thought of you are. Here we go again with King Diamond. The trip through Abigail is one I won't forget in a hurry. And now a live song! Just goes to show that this band is no studio creation. And that's something I'm really happy to learn. Chase, you now have more than just a couple of people thanking you for bringing this band to Randi's attention. And send gifts too!!!! You have a kind soul. This is excellent, as is your reaction. TTFN.
Thanks Graham! King Diamond (the man) truly is a unique and very talented singer, and the musicians are top notch as well. The confidence that he has in his own voice to get out there and just let these vocals rip is inspiring. I think in my younger days of high school choir, I could have possibly managed to hit one of the higher notes with falsetto. However, after going down into my low range (I was a baritone) as he does effortlessly, I would have NEVER been able to get back to one of those high notes, lol. It was my pleasure to bring them to the attention of anyone here who was not familiar with them.
If King Diamond ever tours your area, you should definitely go see the show - I am certain you will have an unforgettable blast! Btw, very cool t-shirt. I'm thinking of getting one too. I've been a King Diamond fan since the mid-1980's, right after the Abigail album came out.
I have that exact same shirt! 😁 I saw King Diamond in 2019. He played this song. That section after the guitar solos when everything goes red and his voice gets super deep and low was the only time I took my phone out and recorded those 20 seconds. I posted it to my Facebook and just wrote "Pure unadulterated EVIL!"
The album that this song came from is killer, King Diamond is my favorite singer if all metal bands. The album 'Them' is his third album that is after 'Abigail', listen to welcome home from the album 'Them', I know you'll like it.
Yes King Diamond is a very talented story teller. From Abigail, which I named my daughter by, to The Puppet Master. The reason the guitar solos sound so different and unique is cause he has two different people doing a different part. If you look closely you'll see.
Yep, he's still going strong! This live performance was from 2015, and the band has a new album titled The Institute due out in 2022. It was originally meant to be a 2020 release, but I'm guessing the pandemic delayed a lot of things.
You should react to this whole concert, it's King Diamond at his best and they also do the entire Abigail album as a story with on stage characters that follow the story. Amazing show.
King changes his voice up to provide the listener the different dialog and sensory from each character in the story. A really good example is from THE EYE cd, on the track The Trial ( Chambre Ardente) where King literally voices both Jeanne , and the Inquisitor, in an exchange in the basement of a Catholic Church during the Inquisition. There were even other "extras" thrown in that were a part of the scene. as well as King interjecting himself as a Narrator of sorts.
"Beautiful Chaos" that is a way to put it. After 30 years (the album is that old) to be able to sing like that is quite amazing. You can hear some loss of power and clearity, only natural. But all due respect where it belongs, the guy is amazing! As is the band. And he always said he hoped that his stories (or some) will be turned into movies, so there you go... you said it. Could be films, how he paints his music.
Once you've listened to the entire Abigail album, you should go right into "Therm". Sleepless nights is off of Conspiracy. Conspiracy is part 2 of Them
We're probably similar age so yeah it was cassette tapes, then cds...I'd buy one and try to absorb a whole album...never been a one song here and there type :)
Same. I remember saving up to buy the first BSB tape and the PX was sold out. I had to get the CD and use my sister's CD player until I could buy one of my own. 😂 The whole of an 'album' is like a story, or collection of parts. I prefer sort of falling into the journey more than just a single song.
The album version is much better. This live performance is from 2015. The album with that song came out in 1989. All the 80s King Diamond albums are great.
Thanks and really THANKS for your fully review of Abigail. Hope you will do a full album review with some cold beers ((9 or 18)) :) You are absolutely great ! 18 is 9 ....... ?? What the fuck .... Here is some meaning : A book will explain the whole Abigail history so just buy the book ! In the song "The Family Ghost" there is some hard rumors which says that an total unknown sound in 3.26 says Ooooh dawn .... (Spooky) ! Back to 18 is 9 : 9 songs on the album. 1845 is 1+ 8 and 4 + 5 which is 18 1+ 8 is 9 .... This is runemagic as old norse tradition for beginners The 7th day of july 1777 is 7+7 1+7 7+7 = 36 = 3+6 = 9 The age of Miriam is 18 = 9 (( 9 months pregnant )) .... Jonathan is 27 = 9 Perhaps when you drink 9 ( or 18 ) meads you will go to a higher level and discover some more details ? ! Cheers and see you in Valhalla !
I missed this ua-cam.com/video/4UxY_r5oB0k/v-deo.html I will see this in the nearest future !! Highly recommended : King D Fatal Portrait and all old Mercyful Fate !!
King Diamond is my favorite over everything else. It’s cool to see your reactions.
This is only the beginning of the greatness of this band and the other musically talented members of both bands he has
You are more than welcome for the shirt and CD, Randi!! That particular Abigail shirt is my favorite because it does have the album title on the sleeves, so I'm glad you liked that! It looked good on you too!

Chase your pretty cool for hooking Randi up with the shirt and CD. Plus the lyrics you posted.
I got that shirt too!! King is a whole vibe. Put on a whole album, kick back and be blown away!!
I've been watching every king diamond reaction you've made and love every one of them! def subbed!

Your approach to listening is beautiful
Listening to concept albums is a unique joy. King Diamond is amazing.
Lyrics for those interested...
I cannot sleep at night
That's what the day is for anyway
And as the clock strikes midnight
I hear "THEM" dancing at the graves
Singing to My mind
Killing the pain... sleepless nights... sleepless nights
I cannot sleep at night
That's what the day is for anyway
And as the clock strikes midnight
Only "THEY" can let us meet
Even though she's dead now
I gotta see her again... sleepless nights... sleepless nights
(Guitar solo ANDY, Guitar solo PETE)
I cannot sleep at night
I will do anything to see Missy again
"Then let us make you an eternal deal
You will attend to the graves
You'll give us the house back and keep in mind
That we only come here at night"
So we made the deal under the starry night and
"AMON" belongs to "THEM" now...
I feel the dawn coming My way
And as the sun breaks up the dark
I can't hear "THEM" dance no more
There's no voices
Killing the pain... pain... pain
Did I mention he signed my Abigail vinyl?
Also, the change in singing style sometimes is a different character in the story as in 7:36
King was in his 60’s during this show
Amazing

I've always liked the album them.
Saw this tour, best concert ever! Wait until you hear the solo's in "The Invisible Guest" on the album Them.
LOVE YOUR T SHIRT!
Loved Merciful Fate when I was at skool in the '80s a long time ago. Abigail ❤️
This guy is still around? I was listening to this when I was a teenager and I'[m 57.
Yep, he's still going strong! This live performance was from 2015, and the band has a new album titled The Institute due out in 2022. It was originally meant to be a 2020 release, but I'm guessing the pandemic delayed a lot of things.

I´ll see the King next month here in my city, Monterrey México...with Mercyful Fate! and Judas Priest, Stryper, Behemoth and Pantera...same night!! :)

THANK YOU ...for coming over to the dark side .. and for seeing and hearing the TALENT that comes for the KING...
He needs to make movies.
Love to see you delve into King Diamond. Now you need to hear his original band Merciful Fate. Check out the song Evil.
Once you've listened to the entire Abigail album, you should go right into "Therm". Sleepless nights is off of Conspiracy. Conspiracy is part 2 of Them
Puppet master and House of god by King Diamond are great records that have great stories.
