    Hi Joanna, the slanted rod is only on FULL Brögger System flutes. The Miya 101, 202, and 402 are partial and have the straight rod. These flutes have a *partial" Brögger System.

    I tried a Miyazawa 402 (with MX-1 headjoint) earlier this year and fell in love with it. Compared to my Azumi, I found the Miyazawa a lot lighter and easier to play. It was like bending down to pick up a barbell marked 50 lbs. and finding out the ends were balloons. I expected to need a lot more effort because I was used to needing more effort. What I found was I relaxed a lot more in my hands and body. And I enjoyed playing more because I wasn't trying so hard.

    Bruh, your videos are literally the absolute best to play in the background while lazily practicing. I just got a new classical guitar and the first thing I thought was "it's gonna be so fun playing Bach while listening to Joanna talk about flutes"

    Loving your videos, Joanna. At 5:50, you say that you don't feel the need to squeeze the keys for certain notes, and you attribute that to extra efficiency gained from the conical tone holes. However, my Pearl 795 (also pinless, with cylindrical toneholes) gives me the same response you described (and holds that adjustment for a long time). Couldn't that just be the work of an excellent technician? I certainly think so...

  • @Hannah-fh9sm

    Yup- just tried a Miya 202 model at the Shimamura Pepe store in Shinjuku, Tokyo. For a crap re-learner like me it was more than good enough. Very smooth keys, easy tone production. It has similar properties like JAF describes here- almost plays itself. But ended up buying a Yamaha 517 at their huge eight story store in Ginza. The advantage there was I could try four of the same model for comparison. It was more hit and miss at the other chain stores, their inventories were varied...

    I have a Miyazawa! Not a clue what model though...! I wasn't very experienced when I tried flutes, but my parents said they noticed the sound was much better than whichever other one we'd narrowed all of them down to!
    I love the case... but my flute does rattle a tiny bit (I'm not sure which part of it!) if I shake the case upand down :/ At the same time though, there's not been any damage over the 6 years I've had it, and it has accidentally slid/flown off a bus seat once...! Also, I noticed pretty quickly that the bottom of the middle joint was digging into the case where it rests - kind of wearing away a ring into the velvety lining (perhaps that's why it was rattling?) - so I just put a square of craft felt over that part (no glue, just rests there) to stop it from doing it more.

    I know nothings perfect but I noticed that the badge on the French style case is sitting off a bit to the right side down other than that it's a very nice case plus the flute is beautifully made with such innovation with that mechanism construction. I wonder could you do a review and demo on the Nagahara flute sometime. Think you.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist

      +Ben Vongsurith The full Blogger system involves the Blogger thumb mechanism and the double conceal tone holes. The Brannen has the pinless mechanism. Honestly, it just comes down to personal preference in terms of how a flutist would like them.

  • @emmabloom1793

    I am looking for a new flute, because my teacher said that my flute I play now is for beginners and I should buy one that is better. I was like "How the heck should I know what flute I want?" My flute I have is the Yamaha 211, a students model. Short story, I started in 2011 and the yamaha flute is my third flute, because I had some very bad flute to begin. My teacher then bought a new flute for me. (The other two were used for several years, they are flutes for the beginners in my village) . So since then I have my yamaha flute. It never bothered me, the flute is good and because it was new when I got it I never thought of changing my flute. Honestly I thought of buying it.
    So my teacher now said I should get a flute with a silver head joint or completely made from silver. So I was looking on the internet and I discovered the yamaha 372-H. It has a B foot joint, silver head joint and french open holes. It's about 1600CHF. Today I watched this video and you really made me to look for a miyazawa flute. And really, I found one. I think I'll buy a new flute in fall, I'll go to the store and try my favourites and look which flute will choose me😜

    Are all Miyazawa parts made in Japan OR are the mechanisms jobbed out to 3rd world countries? I had my eye on a Powell and when i heard smaller parts were manufactured outside the main plant, i got cold feet. The same with Trevor James and the list goes on. There is an old adage, What they don't know, won't hurt them.

Can I ask also how you would factoring Mateki and Powell, again, comparing spec/price. For example of those brands which $3000 flute is the best which $6000 flute is the best et cetera. Thank you

    hallo there Joanna that flute you where demonstrating is lovely job. I would love to see a 14 k gold one plus the other models you showed on other videos such as the Altus etc where great to. Would gold flutes tarnish as much as silver ones or silver plated flutes. Sometimes I've often wondered are they overpriced because of that problem. I suppose this is just a cosmetic thing because of what happens in the air and ones chemistry in there hands etc.

The one thing I could use in addition to all the useful information you've given, would be a point where you play both head joints right after one another, without a lot of talking in between. It's easier to hear the differences between the two that way. Alternatively, you could provide the times at which you play each below the video, so that people can navigate to them. Thanks again!

    Just to let you know when i saw your video on beginning on the flute, you are the person to convince me to do the flute. I was between the flute and the violin but you convinced me to do it. Also this might sound bad, but I did it because it is a smaller case. I know bad, right?I love you videos so much! You are my role model! Thanks for making me pick the flute! Also how long have you been playing the flute? I've been playing for 5 years. I know I basically just started. And did you did any school performances like solo and ensemble or like honor band? Could u test and old flute from the 60s 70s and 80s???? And see how they are compared to the actual crafted flutes??? I think old flutes are always better...i don't know why. Maybe the material used to build them, they give you a big deeper warmer sound even on a Yamaha 24 S or a Yamaha 211N. With no silver in it at all. What do u think about it? Once i play an old destroyed and rusty flute in a store and it sounded so amazing with free open response, extremely warm sound that o fell in love. i couldn't believe. Obviously i didn't buy it for the bad condition of the metal

    I've heard from a flute shop in the U.K. that the new brogger system is hard to maintain and fix and repairers don't like them, has anyone else had a problem with the new brogger system? This flute shop told me they have stopped selling the new brogger system miyazawas because of this issue. I was very surprised! Has anyone else heard about this? I love my miyazawa but have an older model. Not sure what to advise to pupils thinking about brogger as the system hasn't been around for that long yet to see how it lasts over time? Not sure!

      The Brogger system is proven as it has actually been around for a long while now. I would use the other two shops as one of the three makes all sorts of odd claims about flute makes. and it probably says more about the business doings of the shop than reality. Do you choose your flute on account of the repair person not being up to much ? .....

    I thought that the standard tuning for instruments was A=440?

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  8 років тому

      +Justice Nugent Having flutes tuned at A = 442 allows for wiggle room in case you need to push your headjoint in a bit 😊

    • @grantbender500
      @grantbender500 4 роки тому

      And this is generally the rule of thumb for North America.. most of Europe tuned to A = 445.

    Color me confused but lets say you do poke a pin though a plug. Normally they aren't made of silly puddy and are fairly strong as they do need to plug the holes. it barely takes any force to remove the plugs from my instrument I feel like half the time you'd go to remove the plugs with a pin and end up ruining your flute.

    • @JustAnotherFlutist
      @JustAnotherFlutist  8 років тому

      +RememberPluto Accidental removal of the ring inside the key has probably happened enough times to warrant this note though 😉

      +JNmusiclover Nguyen If you aren't quite ready to buy but would like to try instruments, you should see if there are any flute festivals or conventions near you! FCNY frequently show up at these festivals/conventions too!
