Gilles Villeneuve is the proof that you don't need to be a F1 World Champion to become a legendary driver
Mattia Longhin ronnie peterson equally so
@@Eeter26 truth
Very true, but don't forget the original legend: Sterling Moss
Do you mean that all F1 champions are legendary?
I wouldn't agree.
I would say Gilles was indeed I cannot recollect any racedriver with such a sheer determination and passion. Racing for each lap and he preferred to fight for a position then a given win.
@@morfi3395 i didn't said that every F1 champion is a legendary driver. Be World Champion could help but it's not a guarantee

A true legend to the sport. R.i.p Gilles
For who he was, for how he drove, Sunday race was a slap to his memory, especially in a track named after him.
Salut, Gilles.
I always get emotional talking about or seing images of Gilles. His story is so great and inspiring. I started watching F1 in 1997 (I had three years old at the time) because my father was following Jacques's career. I then learned about Gilles some years later when I was around 8 years old and since then he is my F1 hero.
Salut Gilles!
See my comment too, please. I searched a bit about why the circuit is called so. And now that I am knowing his history, it feels as if to me he's a very very close person who's lost, even though I'm from another country. One day I'm going to ensure I'm present at the circuit and attend an F1, just to remember him.
@@kevinfrederick378 Just saw your comment while I was rewatching the video lol! I understand! I'll read your comment! I wish you to go to Gilles Villeneuve circuit, it's a great atmosphere and so fun! Gilles forever the best!
I was only 11 years old in 79 when he was leading at Zandvoort and displayed his amazing skills on 4, 3 and finally 2 wheels.
From that moment, he was, still is and will be always my hero.
There was not much TV coverage in my country back then and had to do with few magazines only.
It was just only 19 years later, when I red his biography, that I fully understood WHY he is so special.
I have many books, cars, went to Montreal, sat in his 77 formula Atlantic car, went to the museum in berthierville.
The man can still touch me and also make emotional as he seemed to be so bitter and disappointed in the weeks before he died following the betrayal of Pironi.
Or when seeing the famous and beautiful Belgian documentary or when his son fulfilled and spoke the words, it has been accomplished.
That he is your hero while born in 97 touches me also.
Thanks for your nice post.
''To many, he remains the purest, most thrilling, most explosive talent ever to sit in a racing car.'' Nigel Roebuck
Yep! He is aquarium zodiac, lauda too! Aquariuns the BEST racer cara ALL time!!! YEAHHHH
Best driver never to win a WDC.
And Stirling Moss

Montoya : hold my beer
And Massa
FloSan Stirling Moss was truly the best to never win. I mean, he willingly gave up a championship that was easily his. If you look at his racing record, he pretty much finished on the podium in almost every motor race he ever entered. The guy was so damn fast.
I raced from 1985 to 1987 with the number 27 in homage to the only hero I have ever had...thank you for the wonderful memories..God bless you.
As a Tifosi I am really fond of Gilles, I love Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Ayrton Senna, but for me Gilles is the Best Racing driver ever...
Tifosi is the pluar of tifoso
Phenomenal delivery mr Buxton that was a great hats off I'm sure he would have been thankful for the rememberance
The only driver who challenge the laws of physic on every single lap of is career, no matter the conditions. RIP Gilles. You will forever remain the bravest of the brave.
He was the best! My sports hero from the first time I saw him race at Watkins Glen in 1978. He pushed every lap to win no matter what place he was in, or how competitive his car was. Although he never won a championship, I still hold him above, Senna or Schumacher. Sats do not reflect heart or passion!
A real driver and legend, no crying on radio or interviews, no fia help for him, equal treatment with him teammates, bravery and no cheating.
Please subs for those who don't speak English
I was a lifelong Ferrari fan. For one season, I wanted that Jacques Villeneuve's William to beat Schumacher. After that one year, I went back to support Ferrari. I actually believed that every true Ferrari fan should understand that.
Oh, we do
Gilles was a hero and a patriot
He was the man, his car control, his passion, the guy was pushing every lap he didnt care if he was 1st or 8th, too crazy to be world champion, but that's what fans loved about him, he became a legend without winning a championship.
Salut Gilles

@@amnaah653 Irvine, Coulthard, Frentzen and Webber were all inferior to Barrichello. Barrichello had some great drives with Jordan, Stewart and Ferrari. Like Donington 1993, Interlagos 1999, Hockenheim 2000, and Silverstone 2003. And before you mention 1999, Irvine needed Häkkinen to crash alone two times at Imola and Monza, plus three retirements due to reliability to have a chance in 1999, while he had only one retirement.

@Roger Dodger I understand that Gilles would've probably got him into racing if he hadn't died
He would have died from pride and joy, so it is good he was already watching from the clouds.
Gilles already answered this question when he was alive.
My son is now 20yo and just started getting interested in F1. I showed him several videos and Gilles' story including how I felt when our family watched that '78 Canadian Grand Prix live on TV when he won. Our house just erupted when he took the lead in that race. We were so proud of GV. My son is totally getting wht Gilles was such an amazing driver. Probably the best. Too bad he passed away so early in his career.
Merci Gilles for incredible memories. We will never forget you. RIP.
I can still remember my mother barging into my room on that day in May. 1982, to tell me the news, Gilles was in an accident and in hospital, clinically dead...that's how they worded it. i was kneeling on the ground, listening to my new stereo, headphones on...can't remember which song, though, I just tuned out and stared at the wall for a couple minutes...

Gilles is so underrated driver
@TVeg
That's Prost.
@@avada0, Prost isn't underrated, he is recognized as one the greatest and has 4 WDCs (1 stolen for him by Ballestre, another stolen from him by Ballestre, so it evens out).
Gilles on the other hand, wouldn't have died in todays safety cells and had he had a competitive car, would probably be equally successful or more.
@Daniel Radetic
Everyone's Senna-ing, just because he snuffed himself on a wall.
I believen Ballestere didn't manage to steal anything from anyone. He might have had Senna disqualified from the Japansese GP, but Prost won that year by almost two race wins worth of points. I don't think Ballester acted against Prost.
But he did lose a championship by half a point, 2 points, and when actually scoring the most points...
Se he easily could have won 7.
No he isn't, anyone who knows of him thinks his amazing
Villeneuve divides opinion, some regard him as one of the greats, & others think he was a madman.
Villeneuve pushed his car like mad at Zolder because of how pissed he was at Pironi for stealing the win from him at Imola when he disobeyed orders.
@Flame Resistant Troll are you Québécois? If not.....i can asure you that it's because of is big caracter and not just about circonstances
@Flame Resistant Troll i am.....and the dicision he take to go on the track....push the car and the tire over the limit was because he had a big caracter just we all have here....he was pist off about the last race!!
@Flame Resistant Troll....yes he was! But, Imola was too much...unloyal for a teamates and Ferrari not penalyse Pirroni. That weekend it was not about being professional...it was personnal....same personality has his brother!! Lol
I will not try to change your mind, i like to hear other point of view and share mine....maybe you are wright and i'm wrong!! Guess will never know!
@Flame Resistant Troll yeah a mix of that....for me and a lot of québécois it's because he was so mad that he make that dicision in that corner...maybe the only bad moove that he make! Well trying to do some loops with a helicopter and your son in....will not look as good decison in todays eyes!!🤣
Good night sir it's time to bed in Montréal...well almost...maybe one or two video of Gilles before!
