Actually, to be a coroner you need to have the same training as an “undertaker” and that takes at a minimum of a year. You work closely with cadavers during that time. It doesn’t take medical knowledge, but disposition of corpses is different from being a medical examiner, which does take medical training.
It depends on where you are. Here, the coroner is an elected position. You must get training on death and causes thereof. The coroner does not know anything about embalming, etc. that an undertaker would, other than what he may have random knowledge of. In larger counties, the coroner may appoint assistants, whose decisions are also recognized by the state.

Thank you so much for showing the Oxford Hollow. This is going to make such a huge difference in my journals, and make them a lot easier to bind, too. I can't get over the fact that I keep watching you and still keep learning more.
I truly enjoy watching you bind a book. You're so skilled and precise in all your movements and the final result is always perfect and beautiful. I know you've bound hundreds of books in your career by now and it's a joy to watch an expert at her craft. I'd never heard of the Oxford hollow... thank you for the excellent tutorial for it. I can definitely see the difference it makes. Thank you again for this wonderful video. My condolences for the loss of your friend. God bless you. 😊❤️
NIK. You're an angel person. I have my mother's copy of Jane Eyre--now MY copy of Jane Eyre--that has lost its covers long since, and I keep wanting to bind it. My book-binding knowledge is scant at best, and watching your videos is helping me so much! Thank you, thank you! I'm getting braver every time I see one!
@@NiktheBooksmith Oh, definitely! I have a couple dictionaries and a few low-investment books I nabbed up from the library sale. :) This is just a thing I've wanted to do for ages, and I have the tools, so why not?
Sorry for your loss 😪 A great tutorial, as always. I've always wondered if I could swap out a soft cover for a hard cover. Thank you for sharing your methods x
I absolutely loved that tutorial. You explain everything so clearly and eloquently. You really got me on the whole segue into the coroner conversation. I was laughing because it was so far afield and yet felt like we were have a stream of conscience conversation over coffee. LOL. Anyway, loved the bookbinding education!!!!
I don't know why your videos came up in my feed, but I'm glad they did. I can see how bookmaking could become addictive. Just an FYI. The coroner doesn't actually do any medically stuff. They are more of an investigator. In a coroner's office, a pathologist (who does have medical training) actually handles the medical side. I'm sorry to hear about your friend. It's never easy to lose someone we care about, but it's even harder when they go suddenly.
Oh gosh Nik I’m so sorry for the loss of your friend. At least it’s great that you got to spend time with your brother. The Poe book and the Dictionary look like they should be in a library of a British noble property. I always learn so much from you, thanks. Take care of yourself and have as good a weekend as it’s possible.
I really enjoyed watching you recover the book! I"m almost as old as that Poe book (gasp) and I totaly know the feeling of needing a new cover! I'm so sorry to hear about your friend passing. Sending you some love and good juju!
Thank you for sharing this! I've watched a couple paperback-to-hardback binding tutorials, and yours is the most "accessible" - not a lot of specialist equipment or complicated calculations! I will definitely be using this to preserve my own novels for our library!
Heartfelt and warmest condolences on the loss of your dear friend, Nik. I am truly sorry. Sending you love, peace, solace and comfort. Be gentle with yourself. You're allowed to be "out of it" for as long as it takes. Thank you for another amazing video. Your expertise is just stunning to watch. Love and Bless xo
Very nice tutorial Nik and a very good explanation of an Oxford Hollow. Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend and hopefully you have loads of really good memories shared with them. In the UK a coroner is also appointed by the local authority and is usually a lawyer but they may also have medical qualifications. The UK Gov website defines it as: "A coroner is a special judge who investigates unnatural or violent deaths, where the cause of death is unknown, or because the death took place in prison, police custody or another type of state detention, such as a mental health hospital." They do this by listening to testimony from all the relevant experts and also to any witnesses etc.
I so love watching you and as a crazy bookbinding hobbyist, i find you also wonderfully informative. Thankyou so much for sharing yourself with the world!
I ABSOLUTELY LOVED when you said everything is optional; because I used that saying so much myself. Thank you for the video as well as the commentary I hope you are doing well.
That is really cool! This is a FABULOUS upcycle to paperback books that people may want to keep, like the language dictionaries. I am going to give this a try with a few of my reference book paperbacks that I have.
I love watching you do this stuff!!! You are sooo good!!! I will probably never ever do this, but I could watch you all night!! Also love your crime stories. I am a true crime reader. Thank you so much for allowing me to watch you.
Thanks Nik ! Learnt about Oxford Hollow today ! Will be using that tomorrow as I repair an Old Engineer's Handbook that belonged to husband's Uncle Frank. All the best from Adelaide South Australia.

Amazing job! I too have an old book that I would love to turn into a hardback. I might have to watch this about a hundred times to get up the nerve to try. 👏👏👏

This is SUCH a superb, exquisitely well-executed project! So many valuable and useful skills and techniques on display, all consolidated into a single project and video. I love your skillful use of so many tools and supplies, including such things as repurposing and refactoring the machinist's 1-2-3 blocks and clamping-positioning squares. And especially, I LOVE your Maker's Hands, entirely without any kind of vanity manicures! You da one!
That last bit was scary. I don't think my hand is steady enough for that! You took an ugly cover and elevated it to a supreme level. If books had feelings, then this one would thank you for giving it another 100 years!
