"He didn't answer the question!" Except that he did, just not directly. The entire point of Tunnel Bob/Auri story is about how they may share some key characteristics, but they are completely different people. The woman Denna is based on (who he confirmed exists) is not Denna, doesn't act like Denna, and for all we know is his wife. If he said who it was, people would assume that she was Denna and would contact her with the intention of "white knighting" for an author they barely know.
Well said, sir and/or madam! I agree completely. It's important to be able to separate real life from fantasy - even if some part of Denna, even the parts that a lot of people dislike, is based off of a real life person, that doesn't mean they're the same person. Could be he cherry picked traits from a whole bunch of different people, or could be he chose one key, interesting trait of a person, only to build his own, brand new character around that trait - like with Auri.
Exactly. all it takes is for him to know a woman whos looks or mannerisms makes the writer think 'what if someone like her was evil or crazy or heroic or a goddess'. The writer could also have a character who they have fully written out what they will do, their motives and impact on the storyline but just can't pin down how they will move, speak or dress. Then at a dinner party meets a person and boom their voice or looks fit the character the writer has been struggling to picture. Rabid fans hating on you is already bad enough for actors who actually sign up to play evil/bad characters (look at Joffrey's actor), could you imaging just being an ordinary, quiet, private office worker and suddenly the internet hates you.
Just to hammer this home. If Denna is based on someone in Rothfuss' life, then Rothfuss is Kvothe. Kvothe is a self obsessed teen who doesn't understand the subject of their affection. Fair enough, understanding people is hard, and teens have less experience. What Rothfuss is saying is that he fucked up his relationship with "Denna".
A lot of people seem to hate Denna and it baffles me. All I see is a hurting, confused person whose life is a tragedy, whose interactions are botched. The idealisation that Kvothe has of her reminds me of myself in my early teenage years, where you kind of forget that the counterpart is a real human being, flawed and all. To finish this train of thought, Denna seems to be a trauma-survivor of some sort. Her actions are frequently self-destructive, she has trust issues, and has a very low self esteem. Why people find it in themselves to hate such a character, I don't want to know.
Probably because Kvothe is the character we relate to the most, as he's the protagonist. We want to see him happy and successful, and its plain to see that, for whatever tragic reason, Denna is a source of pain for Kvothe.
maybe because most of people reading kingskiller chronicles are adults, so we see kvothes mistakes as well as dennas and can relate to them as we did similar mistakes as teenagers too, but the problem is that kvothe is main character, we can see his thoughts, but in denna's case we cannot, we can only see a foolish young girl who ensnares and leads or main character, we are invested in, astray, we unknowingly are taking it personal;y.
@@azmyers6851 mostly because, we know, at some point, he has to make the choice to end her life... edit: And then there is the issue that Kvothe knows things that Denna doesn't... and in some way, he chooses to only tell her small bits at a time.... so she doesn't know all the details we do, inevitably leading to her choices being as they are
Just because your life is a tragedy doesnt mean you can take advantage of others in full knowledge of the others wishes for you. I know a woman like that. shes been together with a friend of mine for years now and i cant get it into my head why. She manipulates everyone by acting naive and "cute", but when you talk to her normally and she knows she cant manipulate you, you see the real person behind her sharade. Its kinda scary, especially because it works so well with so many guys.
Rothfuss: Oh you wanna know about Denna's real life inspiration? Me: YES! Rothfuss: Well, you're guess on her having real life inspiration is spot-on! Now, let me tell you an interesting story... ... ... ... And then, bam! Ari! Me: Wow, cool... Wait, wait what about-! *Video ends* Denna? I look away for one minute and he's talking about Ari. -_- Well played, Old Man... (Not that old, I was joking, sorry!)
People don't realize the Auri is the real love interest. Kvothe attraction to Denna is a juvenile immature infatuation. First love. Destined for failure.
He really does not like talking about Denna, I've seen people ask him about her inspiration and her character arc several times and he never answers. It's like he has some kind of geas that keeps him from talking about it.
I see the fact that he doesn't talk about the real life person as a sign of respect for their anonymity and safety. It's kind of sad that people want to know who the exact person is so badly.
It really says a lot about Rothfuss' character that he didn't name names in this rambling story. The closest he came was repeating the name that the townspeople gave to a local eccentric that liked to cosplay as a mole. It'd be easy to accidentally say too much and then 1 or 2 crazy fans would take things too far and start stalking some random woman. A woman that he might not have seen in years and may not even remember that she once knew Rothfuss, or that her odd mannerisms have been morphed into a character from his books.
I think any sensible person would have answered it the way Rothfuss did. I mean, I've had traumatic relationships when I was younger, but even then I don't hold any bad blood because it was so long ago and ultimately doesn't matter anymore. We are all young and stupid at some point. Even still, using that type of platform to badmouth people you don't like would just make you look petty anyways.
He gave a satisfying answer and so much more, while still deflecting the question. That's a skillfully storyteller. I've only seen him play D&D, never read any of his work. I might have to look up something of his.
You can see why he takes so long to finish a book when it takes him 7 and a half minutes to answer a simple question…of course he still didn’t answer the question.
Patrick Rothfuss is the author of a series of books, The King killer Chronicles (1. The Name Of The Wind, 2. The Wise Man's Fear, and a spin off called The Slow Regard of Silent Things, depicting a day in the life of the character he mentions in this video, Auri) The third of of the series, Doors of Stone iirc, hasn't been released yet, and as you could probably tell from the immature levels of toxicity in the comments, people aren't happy about it because he isn't dedicating every moment of his waking life to finishing it. Dudes a perfectionist who spends a crazy amount of time ensuring his books are exactly how he wants them before publishing (averaging over 10 years of drafts iirc) and some people get salty because hes not going at their pace. Just to give info on the dude and why there's so much toxicity around him. Tl;dr - an author most known for two books and a novella (which qre genuinely quite good imo) with a very entitled and impatient fanbase.
I think the way Denna just appears everywhere Kvothe goes is not natural. For a while I homestly thought she was sent by the Chandrian to keep an eye on Kvothe, but then I realised that it didn't make any sence. If they thought he was a threat to them, they would just kill him...
Wow! I never actually considered that theory. I personally thought Denna was following him when she could, making money where she could, meaning that her ability to follow Kvothe was consistently fragmented.
I know im a year later but, if we assume that The Cheath doenst lie, why a member of a chandrisn would let his "master" (i dont know the word in english) to beat her?

For me Denna is a literary version of a girl that I used to work with that I also once drunkenly slept with. It’s impossible for me to picture anybody else when I read about Denna. Both of them just total enigmas.
Well, one recommendation for me, Wait after the 3º book is release, in the next august(I HOPE). Because the fucking waiting and delay is killing me man.
Denna is not evil as the question suggests. She's a woman who survived alot, the streets, the abuse, and she always walks a fine line (survival) between pride and whoring herself..as she is in a society as a whole clearly patriarcal, and she is economically dependent on men, who say they ''love'' her, but their fascination does not garanty her safety nor dignity, as they quickly think they own her because of that dependence. Her social statue makes any relationship with men start with her at an inferior or weaker position, so she has to mantain a position of control by staying aloof and unatainable and fascinating. Because they already think they own her, but if she becomes a conquest, they'll discard her. Her attitude is of self preservation. she shows her true self to the hero, mostly because socially they are equally poor, and so she does not feel too threatened..and also because, he accepts her dissapearing act and does not act like if he owned her..she also tests him by those dissapearances to see if he'll do like her other men. And at the same time, when she does not find him, she ''pouts''... It's the typical behavior of prideful, strong willed and yet insecure women.
@@owenjames8575 I have replied the question adressed to public. concerning his recommendation algorithm he should ask either himself or youtube, not users.
I love Denna. She has her own magic secrets. I can’t wait to see what she does in book 3! Denna isn’t a bitch to Kvothe, Kvothe is just an idiot who thinks he knows more about Denna than he does.
The most interesting fact I learned from this video is that the UA-cam algorithm is scary. I read the Kingkiller Chronicles like three months ago and have searched some background info about the release of the third book afterwards and got some chuckles from memes about book three being in the works for ages. Also, I read a comprehensive chapter by chapter analysis and mentioned it in the series in a UA-cam comment. I haven't thought about or googled anything about the book afterwards as far as I remember. And suddenly, today, UA-cam recommends this video. I am a little confused and scared and Patrick, please finish book three before UA-cam is bought by Disney and the monopolise fun.
So basically, yeah, Denna is based on someone, but like Tunnel Bob’s transition into fiction you wouldn’t be able to tell who this “Denna” was in real life if set side by side with her fictional counterpart (it isn’t lazy photoshopping). If he said too much more he might get himself into hot water with the real life Denna (or at the very least embarrass her and maybe even himself). He still managed to address the question as much as he could without giving up too much of his own private life to a room and world full of strangers (like us here in UA-cam land). I don’t think we should demand or expect to know all of his private life and how that translated into his books (Wanting it, and demanding/expecting it are two different things).
He did not come up with the characters or plot lines of KKC, he could’ve wrote the majority of book 2, and definitely both Novelas, but no way he did book 1. This man is a fraud through and through
UA-cam recommended this to me, I thougth it was about Denne the mord sith in "The sword of truth", a series I truely love. Never heard of the "The Kingkiller Chronicles" but apparently I should check it out.
Actually almost ordered it, but then I saw that the third book in the triologie still isn't out (and with no release date). So I'm waiting for it to come out, or close to release so I can read them all in a timely fashion and not have to potentially wait 2+ years for the last book to come out.
I honestly don’t think there will be a third book anytime soon....... ever even? I knows it’s irritating to start a trilogy without the guarantee of the third...... but it’s still absolutely worth it! Think about it if you have the time!
@@kirstymcl3425 although kind of for lore reasons. Because I assume she's the Princess Ariel from the NOTW blurb, so I was thinking like "Auriel" which is ori-el.

auri is the name of a highly poisenous yellow pigment that got used for wallpaintings for example and could drive people mad. the color is called kings yellow which is interessting for many speculate on her being a princess
I think I get what he's trying to say. Even if it wasn't directly transferrable he still amalgamates interesting experiences into interesting characters. So even if he never had a Denna he would still make a Denna because she's an interesting, dramatic and identifiable component that fits the story.
I think people really misunderstand denna she is nearly exactly like Kvothe but since she's a girl she is seen completely different it's actually pretty interesting
I thought same as you in the first book. But I thing she really act idoitic in twmf (Specifically towards the end of it) I find myself ended up with hating her so badly.
I agree with you completely, she is a great character with many different layers. We don't know much about her origin, her and Kvothe are both very secretive about their past, only we hear the story being told by Kvothe. It could very well be that a great tragedy befell her in her early years as well. What we do know, is that if times are this hard for a young intelligent, musically gifted, (apparently) good looking young fella such as Kvothe, they're gonna be atleast double as hard for Denna, who is all of the above and more, but as a woman a popular target for people who want to take advantage of her. Potential spoilers ahead: I am talking about her patron, who's into some troubling shit and treats her poorly. She resists giving away his identity But also the fact, that almost every time Kvothe recalls seeing her, he mentions her astonishingly white teeth, which to many are a dead give-away for a denner resin addiction. Perhaps she got hooked the first time, when she accidentally consumed it in the forest of Trebon and her nomadic lifestyle is a result of this. What I am absolutely sure of (to finally conclude this train of thought..) is that Denna has definitely seen some shit.
See, after re-reading it, I've found I don't have beef with Denna as I originally did. Tbh, she's pretty cool, but I still wouldn't ship her with Kvothe for the basic reason that she essentially just a female and more worldly version of him. That to me wouldn't make for a good relationship. Devi feels more like an equal, but still retains her own unique attitude and worldview.
I can understand that Patrick Rothfuss changed the topic because asking who Denna was based on is private and personal. However, I’d rather he just say that the question makes him uncomfortable, and he’d rather not answer it to protect his privacy and the privacy of the girl Denna is based on. It would have been good if he explained he’d rather not say who the girl is, so she doesn’t risk getting stalkers or hate mail. I’ve been listening to and reading theories on the Kingkiller books, and loved many of the characters. I hope that Book 3 will be wonderfully written when it’s published. 😊🙂
I love the change in mentality us kingkiller readers have made, a few years ago all you'd see is "hurry the fuck up Patt, jesus what's taking so long", the wait will only make things so much sweeter.
The communities I frequent, which is most book review sites, would quite disagree. Year One, give him time! Year Two, Stop bitching! Three-7? people have become rather disenchanted. A good number of people have asked that I no longer recommend unfinished book series. Rothfuss and Martin have made a rough road for future trilogy authors. I know many people who will no longer purchase unfinished Trilogy's.
I found Denna annoying, she is always swinging between "please come and help me cause im scarred" and "Dont come close cause im scarred" and is tiring, specially because we saw Kvothe going through so much shit and then screwing up left and right but he actually does move past his problems... even if he causes new ones, *but he does something,* there are also other women who do stuff to solve their problems, there is Devi who manipulates people and leverages favors to get access to the magic she was denied because she is a woman (but she is a badass bitch so she may as well be lying to hide her actions), there was Kvothe's mom who ran away to leave her restrictive life behind, the aunt who may be misguided but also proactive on her goals of kicking gypsi's asses, or that rich girl who fell in love with Kvothe and made her moves on him but moved on when it was clear he was not interested There are plenty of other characters that are as fucked up as Denna but they do something to get out of it or keep trying, she us just too much of a damsel in distress and Kvothe goes after her cause he has hero syndrome Yeah, thats it, she is annoying because she is passive on her suffering but active on meddling with others, and also hinders the main character's development, she is the character that makes the story drag on
It is after all a heroic fantasy, that aside i do agtee but i would love to add that we dont know her exact position nor circumstances. Meaning she could still be caught up in a mental battle. Nor do w know what possibly is held against her, taken from her, etc etc. We can so far only speculate.
@@jamesalexhowlett Agreed. We need to do better as a society and a species. We need to take care of out young and weak and old better than we have. so is this book 3 actually coming out? I had to get a career in the meantime while waiting for this book and now I don't even read fantasy anymore! :D haha kidding, best of luck Mr. Rothfuss, godspeed with your endeavours
Speculation Alert: I feel like Denna is a hostage. Like someone knows her real name. Breadcrumb is that she always changes it. Maybe Kvothe can help her, if he can understand her fully (max difficulty as she is such a complex person) and call out her real name? The issue is.. since we are far out in the series, we have likely already been introduced to the person who is controlling her... and i find myself flipping pages to see who it may be..
Well i actually think Abenthy is this person holding her hostage, like he's the only person that knows about the song that the father of kvothe was writing aside from the rest of the troupe wich are dead, and he actually got to leave the troupe right before the chandrian attack, for me he's like tryin to make Denna sing this song to get the most people to hear it, idk if that makes sense.
Lanre/Haliax also knew about the song Kvothe's parents wrote. And in Denna's version of the story, Lanre is the good guy. Could be that Lanre is her patron.
IRL Denna did such a number on him that he deflected harder than any human has ever deflected before.
I mean, he was straight up about it though.

LOL, you are exactly correct... now let me tell you about a character that I prefer to talk about
oh, and I may be taking Tunnel Bob for D&D, my mom will have no idea he's inspiration for Auri
wait... you are playing DnD with your family? thats kinda awesome xD
"But the Third Hour, that's Tunnel Bob's time."
Auri is one of my favorite characters in all of fantasy. Knowing Rothfuss' inspiration for her is a real person... I wish I could meet "Tunnel Bob."
Basically a round about way of saying "you don't wanna open that can of worms."
Don't you worry, Tunnel Bob is still creeping around Engineering.
Amazing that Tunnel Bob has reached a legendary status. I had met him once, sitting down. The man definitely stands out in a crowd.
@@azmyers6851 mostly because, we know, at some point, he has to make the choice to end her life...
edit: And then there is the issue that Kvothe knows things that Denna doesn't... and in some way, he chooses to only tell her small bits at a time.... so she doesn't know all the details we do, inevitably leading to her choices being as they are
people often don't like characters that reflect the bad parts of themself
"... and this his ass fell off." pretty much the story we got. Except we asked for how Jax stole the moon.
Its actually kinda respectful
Itd be super easy for him to throw some girl under the bus
She might still be a part of his life. Or maybe he hid his feelings for her.
I see the fact that he doesn't talk about the real life person as a sign of respect for their anonymity and safety. It's kind of sad that people want to know who the exact person is so badly.
@@LinkLegend0 For all we know, it could be his wife
That is easy to answer, he must invent 1,000 characters and write 1,000 chapters before he can name her.
A woman that he might not have seen in years and may not even remember that she once knew Rothfuss, or that her odd mannerisms have been morphed into a character from his books.
...so you stalk peoples ex girlfriends?
I think any sensible person would have answered it the way Rothfuss did. I mean, I've had traumatic relationships when I was younger, but even then I don't hold any bad blood because it was so long ago and ultimately doesn't matter anymore. We are all young and stupid at some point. Even still, using that type of platform to badmouth people you don't like would just make you look petty anyways.
No one would have used real names in a story like this.
I love the idea of the woman hearing this then going "wait... that's ME?!??"
Deflection 100
Why do I sense chivalry in there as well?
"and his payment was coke" Rothfuss 2016
The acrobatics he pulled getting around that question,
there must be a chandelier in that hall...
I love Patrick. In many ways, it's the pain that denna brought to him that gave a story which gives such joy. That has to be respected.
“Project!!” he sounds like my theatre teacher....
Why did UA-cam recommend some random comicon talk to me? Who is Deanna, who is Pat Rothfuss?
I'm thinking the same exact thing.
Hey, at least you know the random beard dude's name.
Patrick Rothfuss is the author of a series of books, The King killer Chronicles (1. The Name Of The Wind, 2. The Wise Man's Fear, and a spin off called The Slow Regard of Silent Things, depicting a day in the life of the character he mentions in this video, Auri)
The third of of the series, Doors of Stone iirc, hasn't been released yet, and as you could probably tell from the immature levels of toxicity in the comments, people aren't happy about it because he isn't dedicating every moment of his waking life to finishing it.
I thought it was Brian blessed when I clicked
Got you too huh?
The whole thing with wearing the tunnels out is actually a really funny way to explain low Wisdom in D&D. You'll get it; just not right away.
I think the way Denna just appears everywhere Kvothe goes is not natural. For a while I homestly thought she was sent by the Chandrian to keep an eye on Kvothe, but then I realised that it didn't make any sence. If they thought he was a threat to them, they would just kill him...
I remember reading some theories that she was actually one of the Chandrian, not just sent by them.
Wow! I never actually considered that theory. I personally thought Denna was following him when she could, making money where she could, meaning that her ability to follow Kvothe was consistently fragmented.
Doesn't add up. With her making a factually incorrect song about Lanre and all. Doesn't sound like something someone related to The Seven would do.
I think it does. She made the people who became the Chandrien out to be heroes. She also could've been trying to find out what exactly he knows.
I know im a year later but, if we assume that The Cheath doenst lie, why a member of a chandrisn would let his "master" (i dont know the word in english) to beat her?
Seven and half minutes of not answering the damn question. This guy should become a politician.
Thank you oh wise bearded man, I have yet learned another masterful art which I will most definitely use a 100% of the time for the remaining years of my life.
After reading the books, Every time I hear "She's always a woman" by Billy Joel I think of the character Denna

Yeah, this bitchy nerd talks way too much
Don't. It's not worth it. Book 3 will likely never get released, and if it is, it will be rubbish. His well has dried up.
This is random, I have no idea who this guy is or "Denna", why was this recommended?
Seconded.

YES YES YES
UA-cam is owned by Google

I have no idea who this person is but now I want to read his books
Welcome to ther neverending waiting room!
Rothfuss is about as good at finishing answering Q&A questions as he is at finishing books.
There was once a boy with a golden screw in his belly button...
It took Michaelangelo 4 years to paint the Sistine Chapel... 10 years and counting for Rothfuss.

Absolutely do, its the second highest rated series on Goodreads, just below Harry Potter. You won't regret it!

I always figured he “borrowed’ a lot of Denna from Terry Goodkind’s Denna in the Sword of Truth series, which was written years before he even started this in 1994.
auri is the name of a highly poisenous yellow pigment that got used for wallpaintings for example and could drive people mad. the color is called kings yellow which is interessting for many speculate on her being a princess
I think I get what he's trying to say. Even if it wasn't directly transferrable he still amalgamates interesting experiences into interesting characters. So even if he never had a Denna he would still make a Denna because she's an interesting, dramatic and identifiable component that fits the story.
Wow, I haven't thought about Tunnel Bob in ages.
I think people really misunderstand denna she is nearly exactly like Kvothe but since she's a girl she is seen completely different it's actually pretty interesting
You described Devi
And I love Devi. I bet most people do as well
Aakos94 She's cool and all but I'm not forgeting that 50% interest over two months thing.
I thought same as you in the first book. But I thing she really act idoitic in twmf (Specifically
towards the end of it) I find myself ended up with hating her so badly.
Potential spoilers ahead:
I am talking about her patron, who's into some troubling shit and treats her poorly.
Tunnel Bob sounds like a Jim Povolo character.
Devi is best girl. Change my mind.
Auri
Lol Crowder
Devi and Fela are great. Honestly I don't dislike Dena myself, I just think she is broken and under someone's control.
Vashet!.......Not as a love interest....shes just badass!!!
Ah, another day of trying to figure out what Fandom this random youtube recommendation was for
I can understand that Patrick Rothfuss changed the topic because asking who Denna was based on is private and personal.
This man is so interesting. It is annoying when people are so impatient for a good or great book that they insult the writer.
Devi or Auri for the win. Denna is no good for our favorite arcanist.
Dude if i met a girl like Devi in real life i would take alone and never repay it just so she can torture me
God I love this man's way of talking and thinking and he is a dam good dnd player and writer
We need to get rothfuss to go back to college for inspiration
I love the change in mentality us kingkiller readers have made, a few years ago all you'd see is "hurry the fuck up Patt, jesus what's taking so long", the wait will only make things so much sweeter.
The communities I frequent, which is most book review sites, would quite disagree. Year One, give him time! Year Two, Stop bitching! Three-7? people have become rather disenchanted. A good number of people have asked that I no longer recommend unfinished book series. Rothfuss and Martin have made a rough road for future trilogy authors. I know many people who will no longer purchase unfinished Trilogy's.
I found Denna annoying, she is always swinging between "please come and help me cause im scarred" and "Dont come close cause im scarred" and is tiring, specially because we saw Kvothe going through so much shit and then screwing up left and right but he actually does move past his problems... even if he causes new ones, *but he does something,* there are also other women who do stuff to solve their problems, there is Devi who manipulates people and leverages favors to get access to the magic she was denied because she is a woman (but she is a badass bitch so she may as well be lying to hide her actions), there was Kvothe's mom who ran away to leave her restrictive life behind, the aunt who may be misguided but also proactive on her goals of kicking gypsi's asses, or that rich girl who fell in love with Kvothe and made her moves on him but moved on when it was clear he was not interested
There are plenty of other characters that are as fucked up as Denna but they do something to get out of it or keep trying, she us just too much of a damsel in distress and Kvothe goes after her cause he has hero syndrome
Yeah, thats it, she is annoying because she is passive on her suffering but active on meddling with others, and also hinders the main character's development, she is the character that makes the story drag on
It is after all a heroic fantasy, that aside i do agtee but i would love to add that we dont know her exact position nor circumstances. Meaning she could still be caught up in a mental battle. Nor do w know what possibly is held against her, taken from her, etc etc. We can so far only speculate.
The day I realized Deanna was a gold digger was when the KKC went from “greatest story ever written” to “just my favorite”

Speculation Alert:
I feel like Denna is a hostage.
Bredon. The guy Kvothe plays tak with in Severon.
Interesting. Definitely possible. I just think because of all the time invested in Bredon/Tak there has to more to that relationship.
Lanre/Haliax also knew about the song Kvothe's parents wrote. And in Denna's version of the story, Lanre is the good guy. Could be that Lanre is her patron.
The anticipation for the 3rd book is killing me. Any theory could be right.
