A CASUAL GAME?!! That game's real challenge was to collect all 30 melons scattered around the level! Good luck with that! I spat blood and sweat to 100% yoshi story!

I just go for melons AND lucky fruit. Melons first until I can't find anymore, and just finish up with the lucky fruit. Collect 3 hearts, and then I finish.

Strange how most of the beta footage looks better than the end result. That's... really unusual. Shouldn't it be the other way around?

Some cases it's just the actual N64 couldn't handle it, it happened with a lot of games that they had to reduce visuals so it wouldn't lag

Yoshi's Story is my favorite game of all time, we used to rent it every week from Hollywood Video when I was little before I got my own copy for my 7th birthday, so this beta is so cool to watch!!! I kinda teared up when I heard the "unused page" music. I'm bummed to know we could've had one on the gba! Thanks for all the cool knowledge!!

Incidentally, a detail about this game’s history: It was apparently intended to be seen as more of a puzzle game where getting a high score was the main point. That’s why the game is so easy (except the boss fights, which are still inexcusable), and why the scoring mechanics are so complex and gone over in such detail while everything else is so simple. See Particular Mushroom’s video about the 30 Melon Challenge; a much more interesting (and way harder) game than standard, and presumably how it was originally supposed to be played.

Yoshi's Story is a big part of Nintendo history in my life. It was my introduction to not only Yoshi, but the N64. For a kids game, it was very challenging, and had a lot of levels to unlock. I also love how this game gave Yoshi an actual voice. I never liked the SNES sound byte noises Yoshi originally made, and would always kind of frown whenever an N64 game used the SNES voice, instead of the cute voice from Yoshi's Story. Ever since Mario Tennis and the Gamecube era began, Yoshi was finally seen using his Yoshi Story voice, and I still never get tired of the vocals Yoshi makes.

It's a shame discs didn't come to popularity soon enough for the N64 to have them at launch.
But then again, if the N64 had disks at launch, it may have been done with Sony and in that case the PlayStation would have never been built. That would have meant that Square would have had nobody to go to when they broke off from Nintendo. I mean, Square paired up with Sony because the PlayStation was designed to be easy to develop for - imagine where we'd be now if the N64 had no competition. Maybe Sega would have stepped up to the plate?
      Nah.

    • @chrislederer3043
      @chrislederer3043 8 років тому +7

+WhoWatchesVideos It wasn't an issue of disc popularity, it was Nintendo's decision to prioritize quick load times and proprietary cartridges.

+Nintega Dario There are a number of reasons betas for any system look better. The usual reason is performance or that the development kit can handle more than the actual console can, resulting in the game being downgraded for playability.

    Another insightful video well done.
I always preferred Yoshi standing upright in games like Yoshi's Story, Mario Party, Super Mario 64 DS, Super Smash Bros. 4 and, most recently, Yoshi's Woolly World over the hunchback dinosaur from games such as Super Mario World, Yoshi's Island, New Super Mario Bros. Wii, earlier Smash Bros. games and Super Mario Galaxy 2. The human-like stance proposes there's more to Yoshi than just existing as a ride for Mario and friends.

I remember that even as a child, I was disappointed with the simplicity of Yoshi's Story after playing and loving Island for years (I know it was made as a more casual experience to appeal to children).

    • @chompythebeast
      @chompythebeast 2 роки тому +1

Same here. I also kinda felt like 2D platformers were "old", I didn't really want to play them. Years later after playing Mischief Makers I did end up beating Kirby and Yoshi 64 though. I also was so excited to play the game that I rented the Japanese version from my local game shop. I thought the intro song was so bad it'd _have_ to be changed in the US (it wasn't haha). And I guess it was a much easier version, too, so that didn't help.
I realize now that these concerns are quite dated, tied to the great leap forward that was 3d gaming. We don't really see these kinds of sudden culture shocks anymore

I feel so bad, I actually never played Yoshi's Story until this year! Back in the day of it's development AND release, I was well aware of it and really excited and curious to play it, however for some reason, I just remember that it did not happen. Also, it's really a fuzzy memory, but for some reason, I sort of recall that my older brother said that it looked like a bad game or something. Well anyway, it's taken me all these years to finally buy a pre-owned cart, and I swear, it's my new favorite N64 game! And how nice, I came back to this channel tonight and found that there was a video about it :D

  • @themaritimegirl

I've always been a fan of Yoshi's Story. The use of 2D graphics gave the game a very unique look with better resolution and framerate than you usually see in an N64 game. And the music is awesome. I only wish the game could have been longer and more difficult.
Like some people in the comments, I too actually like the look of the beta more than the final game.

I saw the cover of this game in a dream when I was a kid, but the text read yoshi's island and i had no idea yoshi's island was a thing. I was staying at my grandma's house at the time and she's a hardcore gamer so I asked her if there was a game called yoshi's island for the 64. She said no. Many many many years later I got a DS with Yoshi's Island DS. I figured that must have been what I was thinking about, but I was intrigued. I googled for yoshi's island games and found the snes game. I even went as far as Googling "Yoshi's Island 64" and couldn't find anything (this was years ago.) I just saw the thumbnail for your video and I was like "Holy shit!!!" I just Googled the cover and was like, yep, that's it right there. Thank you for bringing me closure. I thought I had a glitch in my abilities but so far every vision I have seen has come true. Wow.

    It´s kinda interesting.
I can remember when i got the game on Christmas along with mario and the console.
And there were those little Flyers inside the Box. And really there were Beta Footage on it along with the supposed Name Yoshi´s Island 64.

Funny that you should release a Yoshi's Story-themed video today. You see, I teach elementary school in Japan, and during the winter I wear a coat with Yoshi on the front. When the kids notice Yoshi, I usually do an impression of Yoshi's voice, which they think sounds just like his actual voice. But today I realized my impression is based on Yoshi's Story which is likely far too old of a game for them to have ever played, and yet they recognize it. It then occurred to me that Nintendo has been using the same damned recording from Yoshi's Story in all games with Yoshi in them until this day!

There's even a very complex challenge in game too!
There are 30 melons in each stage.
AND YOU NEED TO DO THE MINIGAMES PERFECTLY.

I got to agree with some of the other people here and say that the beta levels looked so much better. That was a big goof on their part.

Yoshi's Story is actually a 2.5D game, meaning Yoshi is still in a 3D environment, but can only move left and right along pre-set paths. Super Smash Bros is also a 2.5D game

5:15 Also, the beta Black Yoshi has light blue shoes, whereas they're white in the final version, and given to the White Yoshi.

Yoshi Story is still my favorite game of all time, and Yoshi my favorite Nintendo character! Still hoping they do a port some day, maybe a download for the 3DS or something. But if not, then hopefully we can get more Yoshi games!

Very nice! Yoshi's Story is my favorite Yoshi game; it inspired my hobby of doing Mario cartoons.
This was a nice look at Yoshi's Story's development.

ok for real the beta of the backround with the pirhanna plants looks more like the animated commercials they had for the other 64 games

The beta looks way better than the final product. I loved Yoshi's Island but hated Story.

That was very interesting! I loved Yoshi's Story as a kid, it was relaxing yet weirdly hard. While the final game looks great, I have to say, some of the beta stages looked even better, such as Piranha Grove and the underground level.

Kinda weird that they didn’t decide to re-record Kazumi’s Yoshi VA soundbites until 2010.
I guess they liked using the original 90’s recordings and didn’t wanna have to re record for each game.

The spaceworld footage looks better than the final game. Then again, it was probably running on unfinalized Ultra 64 hardware like what Killer Instinct Arcade was using.
