I remember this day well. My husband and I lived 15 mins away. We drove through right after it hit. Absolutely horrible.

I just left work to get home to be with my wife and two children, as they said the tornado was coming right on path towards our home. We huddled together in our basement bath tub...the three of them were in it, and I laid over it to protect them of debris. As we can hear the tornado getting closer, we can hear it begin to run the roof of our home off. We think we are safe in the basement, then I see it rip the 2nd floor off. I’m looking up into the eye of it at this point.... It rips me out of the tub and I get sucked 100+ feet in the air, spinning at 200mph. As the Bible said: Jesus will always protect us.... so as I’m spinning, I said a prayer, and Jesus himself came and grabbed me, and we went flying together. Jesus said to me: It’ll all be over soon, so enjoy it, and pretend it’s a water park ride. So I did... me and Jesus were holding hands and spinning in circles during the massive twister. Then, Jesus said to me: Alright dude that was fun, but I gotta let you go back to home... so he threw me towards my home.... I am doing back flips all the way there, until I land perfectly on my feet on a floating piece of wood.... I surf throughout the remainder of the tornado, then it died down and I was home. Thank you Jesus... see, the Bible never lies, and the Bible is very realistic! .
I was 21 years old when this came thru town. Scariest day of my life for sure! Awesome video!

This happened the day before my 10th birthday I'm 19 now crazy this November will be 10 years
I don't live there any more but I grew up there. Class of 81.
I am from Mt. Vernon seen plenty of tornadoes in Southern Illinois. On February 19, 1888, a tornado cut a path a half mile wide through Mt. Vernon, killing 37 people and destroying more than 450 houses. The Jefferson County Courthouse was destroyed. This event was one of the first disasters to which the American Red Cross responded. Clara Barton herself directed the relief efforts.

This tornado took our home, our cars, our entire neighborhood, and several others. Changed our lives forever, but thankfully so many people were able to take shelter in their basements. Our small town of Washington looked like a war zone after this. The bright side was how so many people came together to help.

My wife and I passed the golf course about 4 minutes before it touched down. We were heading to the square up town. We had no idea it was on the ground until I saw the black mass and heard the tornado eating. After it was over we went to help victims. I will never forget what it did to our town. Our house was untouched and about 6 blocks from the tornado.

I remember the day of this storm. I was 10 years old. Don’t live in Washington but my aunt does. The tornado stole the fence in her backyard, but otherwise she was much luckier than the rest of the neighborhood.
I was Almost 4 years old when this happened I was in Dolton Illinois at the time and there was this EF-2 Tornado(Manhattan to Frankfort) it had 125 Mph winds I don’t what happened because I was almost 4 but It was a Scary ass day

I remember this day very very vividly. Love about 1 hour south of Washington. We had bad storms but no huge tornadoes.

It wiped out 75 %of the town but it missed my Grandparents by a couple of blocks and it was down the road from my house
Ive seen and been in a couple Tornadoes myself, and this Tornado is by far the scariest i have seen. You can look back at Moore and Joplin, and look at those Tornadoes in Aww to see the the raw power of mother nature. But this Tornado is different. You can look at it, and it's stares right back at in the eye with a purpose. It's the image you see every time you close your eyes!
Umm... I can promise you, the Moore tornado “stares back at you” much harder than this one, considering it was WAY wider, with over 100mph faster wind speeds lol.
How this Tornado was not rated an EF5 was beyond me.
This Tornado is not ef5 but F5 from the old Scale in my opinion.
I drive through Benson often and I can't believe that the tornado went by so close along my route down 116
i had a near miss with an EF-1 tornado on august 2011. it killed somebody. :(

I remember when I was 4 years old in my basement cuz of this monster storm and we went there looking at the damage and it was crazy
I remember being in my basement when I was real young. Apparently this tornado came about a half mile away from my house. Not sure if y'all are crazy or brave but that's some amazing footage you got.

You're right with me on this except I really don't remember much I was 4 years old at the time and was probably at my house because what do you expect I was for we probably didn't have to shelter because this was in Washington and we're over 11 miles away from where this happened but I feel you man we're both from Central Illinois we look out for each other

I was only a literal child when this happened and all that really happened was my great grandparents house getting hit and the tornado taking the deck, garage, and roof I lived only about a few miles away in the Robein / East Peoria Area

My uncle Jim and aunt Betty lived on School street at the bend where the power tower is. Two doors down from them there was a house at 1517 School street that got swept away with this storm. The couple that lived there were having some sort of carpet work done by another guy. When they realized the weather was threatening the wife and carpet guy ran into the basement. The husband didn’t make it down the stairs in time. After the storm passed my cousin Karen came out of my aunt and uncles house to assess any damage. The wife that lived at 1517 was looking frantically for her husband. They found his body in a tree several hundred feet away

Graduated from Metamora Township High School in 1997. I resided in Germantown Hills for several years so I am quite familiar with Washington and Tazewell County. I now live in Omaha, NE, but when I heard about this destructive storm I was at the airport in Phoenix, AZ heading back home after attending a cousin's wedding.

I remember this day even though I was only 8. The pictures of the event flooded in weeks afterwards. I never saw the actual damage but would drive through a couple months after and just law rows of basement-less houses. Although I wasn't affected, my aunt and uncle's house was completely destroyed in it
I was unaware what was happening when I was on the road just northeast of Dana on Route 17 heading west. It hit Dana and jumped over me before hitting near New Lenox and Coal City.

Severe Weather predicted for Northern Illinois this afternoon and evening. Father's Day, 2021.
I don't remember much about this day because at the time I was only four but living in Peoria at the time this was in the talks for years afterwards when someone mentioned tornado around here it was like yeah I remember the Washington one personally I don't remember much about it considering I was four but I hope that gives my perspective on the story very big rest in peace to all the people who lost their lives to the storm Washington was affected very hard and is still rebuilding from the storm to this day

Out of curiosity, if you happen to see a funnel form/rotation, how would you report it to weather services?
Call your local NWS office. If there is a tornado, call 911 next so they can sound the sirens.
