You guys are still the best in the genre, and by far the funniest
It’s really a damn shame Sony refuses to bring out a new RX1 generation to take down Fujifilm
Lok, your cardigan and that yellow cup of tea are so lovely together! 🥰
Sony could make a retro style camera and just call it a Minolta. I doubt they ever would though.
This. If they can make an A7CII then they can certainly make a compact full frame camera (that's better than the Rx1R..)
Retro would be very non-Sony. To me it looks, that retro is more followed by brands which have difficulties with their market success (their market share). Such as Nikon, Fuji, Pentax, or so. But Sony is extremely unlikely. Canon also. By today they are too much on a professional and utilitarian mindset, rather than aiming for pleasing old men, hipsters, or other nostalgicans, via an old-looking outer appearance, which also usually implies an non-ergonomic handling, for example via an (almost) non-existing grip.
@@tubularificationed if anything they should get zeiss to make a set of compact, low element count, and vintage looking lenses with modern sony af. maybe label it as a G lens
Loved the chat! so much better than some over the top videos made by others.

Sony RX100VA. Compact. Fast zoom. Full manual control. Retractable viewfinder. Good AF. Not too expensive. I have this camera with me all the time.
I have one. I do wish the sensor was bigger. But that's all, it's actually insanely good and not even "for the size". Of course the VA has the good lens: 24-70 equivalent with f2.8😊
@@0tispunkm3y3rAnd f1.8 at 24mm.
fantastic, I always carry it with me! I took exceptional photos
I owned a Fuji XE4 until recently. It's a very good alternative to the X100 series. Xt4 sensor, amazing black and white pictures.
And you can change the lenses.
I ended up selling it because I wasn't fond of the Fujifilm autofocus system and didn't use it much.
But it's a wonderful small sized camera!
Kai, your photos are the Best!
what a beautifull street photos you make Kai!
Fabulous video. Very witty! Thanks.
Haha !! That was the most relaxed and ‘chumy’ video I’ve seen for a long time. Strangely endearing, yet still informative about the x100v1 and other poss alternative compacts.
U mentioned the Q3, but not the Q, which can now be bought, used, for about £2k / Anyway, thanks for a very relaxed & enjoyable review. 👍👍
I wanted an X100VI but didn't want to spend that much money, so I opted for a XT-30 and I'm really really happy with it :D
I just took my X100VI and my Nikon Zf with me to Italy for a couple weeks and I loved shooting the X100VI. It was nice walking around in all conditions and not worrying about weatherproofing unlike my GRIIIX. Not to mention how nice a viewfinder and tilting screen make seeing your shot much easier than the GR. My only gripe about the Fuji is at times you think you’ve snagged a shot but haven’t because the shutter button/release aren’t that tactile. All around love the X100VI.
As with all of your videos, really enjoyed this one. I think it's good to remember how many alternatives there are 👍
I just got a GR IIIx and it’s incredible. So small and flies under the radar.
Can’t find one In stock. Where did you get yours? I’ve had one before and agree.
@@7743dustin No EVF is a deal breaker for me.

@@7743dustinI found a camera shop on eBay (17th Street Photo) that had 5 brand new ones in stock.
I also had Adorama send me an email a couple weeks ago notifying of new stock.
I suggest starting with signing up for Adorama’s and B&H’s email notifications.
I got gr3x 10 months ago and I did 10 times more photo with is compairing to my ff mirrorless at the same period
Gr3x is unbeatably good for family and street photography
hate that camera. af too slow, screen too dark. absolutely ridiculous for the price point
Love my X100 Six ❤🎉
24:38 a wild Xpan appeared, the best camera you didn't mentioned
canon g10 - still have and love mine!
2:07 How do you get the ERF (electronic rangefinder) to display the entire frame??? Mine only shows a zoom in on the focus area. I just can't figure out how to change that setting!
I've been a champion and user of the EOS M6 II with the 22 F/2. Small...pocketable, and when you're tired of the "35mm", you can still change lenses. Good MPx count and AF good as well. Look at getting one refurbished/used, and can be had for around $700 as a kit. Its my daily - along with the 11-22 ef-m and 56mm f/1.4 Sigma.
Biggest gripe I hear about the EOS M6 II is that the "mount" is dead. Well...more options than a fixed lens at least.
Same here. The system is dead but... really, I don't need more, just keeping it until breaks 😅 also 22mm 90% of time, and 11-22 walk around, and keeping 15-45 in some scenarios. There are also a lot of manual lenses 8-10-35-50-135 to play with... it is underrated, people just want the latest always
Hi Kai and Lok - strange that no one on youtube mentions the Leica CL in this area of compact, cool, APS-C cameras. Super sharp and very filmic quality. I noticed you had a couple of seconds of the Leica X2 but the CL is more modern and has the great 18mm TL pancake if you want super compact or of course loads of M mount options with adaptor. All the best
Had to return mine after waiting 2 months for delivery and only using it for 5 days 🥲 the EVF screen got stuck half way and no matter what I do, it won’t budge. Not sure how long my replacement from BH will take. So bummed.
I had the X10 & X20. Wish they'd continue it.
Great setting at The Anchor pub! 🍺
For easy carry around I like the Sony a6400 with the Sigma 17-50 f2.8. Very good autofocus and still light. If I really don’t feel like carrying much, I can take my Sony rx100va.
You made me buy the GRiii 😊
My alternative is the Sony ZVE10 solid camera for Photography & Video without the heavy price tag.
I couldn't get the X100VI or the Nikon Zf so I went for the X-T5, and I love it, but it's not a camera you always carry with you. The Sony Rx100V I have is perfect for that. Or the X100 OG.
Got a X-Pro1 but also that is relatively big to always carry around.
Anyway just to say that I really didn't need the X-T5, just a bit faster to use X100 (only because I prefer Fuji colors to Sony, otherwise the RX100 would have been perfect).
Forget the Mpx race, true it gives cropping powers, but at what cost?
What about the Panasonic gx9 with the Panasonic leica 15mm 1.7
Might be thinking about it wrong but what about something like a Panasonic gx9 with a pancake lens
Can you make a list of the alternatives at the end of the description? Because other than the 3 you had on hand its hard to find where you've shown other alternatives.
8:20 That’s Joe from MasterChef 😱
Hahah also noticed that and had to see if I was completely off 😂
I went in the comments searching for this...did kai even noticed??

Great review as always guys, but I don't get why the Panasonic lx100 and the mark II get any love as alternatives. Sure the viewfinders weren't the best, and the first iteration had dust issues, but they were great overall. Smaller than x100 series (except for the intruding lens), they offered a great zoom lens (though the fact that it was electronic was annoying) which is something no large sensor compact offers other than 1 inch the catergory cameras, with crazy fast aperture values (even if they were variable, 1.7 to 2.8 is ridiculous). I felt the image quality was comparable to that of X100f at least (for lx100 II) especially if you crop a lot in your edits with the x100 series for a tighter view, in which case wlx100 ii was arguably better in raw. Single point autofocus was killer on those things too, and they offered all the manual control you could want, great video, and even a dedicated aspect ratio button (though that was admitedly there because of the crop on sensor field the lens causes, I loved the fact that it made you think before you take the shot) and how panasonic was able to make a pro out of a con). They looked darn cool too, especially the grey lx100. Stupid Panasonic really. If they could offer weather sealed versions with an oled viewfinder, possibly with a manual operation of the zoom instead of the electronic, and just created their own b.s "film simulations" they would kill the X100 hype in a flash.
The best alternatives would either be the Ricoh GR III/IIIx, the Sony A7c/ A7cii or Fuji's own X-T5.
Sony would knock both Fujifilm and Ricoh out of the park if they add film simulations and focus more on photography on their next cameras. The rumors of a Kodak collab would be amazing.
I had x-t4, then replaced it with a7c + gr3x
They are all great but sony has worst auto WB and colours on presets inside camera
My X100s has died :-( Do I go for a vi, or accept that by the time one is available, Nikon might have brought out a digital SP or Zeiss might have resurrected Contax and a digital G2?
A blue filter when Kai did the POV shot of Lok would have been a nice touch.
Both fellows looking spiffy today!
Sad truth is that the X100s aren't pocketable unless you're wearing a coat.
When you use a soft shutter release and a thumb grip. You hold the camera differently and dont press the shutter with the tip of your finger, but rather where your finger prints are. Or even lower on the flat underside of your finger. The shutter release makes it easier to press it down with minimal pressure like that. Causing less camera shake.
The rounded soft shutter helps spread out the pressure so that you don’t shake your Leica when at a low shutter speed.
I mean a more sensible alternative would be arguably a Leica M 240 if the x100 vi costs around 2-3000 pounds second hand. The focus isn't a problem for a skilled photographer(some people can focus almost as fast as autofocus with a rangefinder). In terms of compactness, you might consider getting a light lens lab 35mm f2(replica of the legendary leica summicron 35mm f2 v1) or a voigtlander. If you want a 50, you might consider the summicron(v1 or v3)
Sony ZV1 is actually really good for video - I have it in my backpack and it takes up much less space than apsc. The selfie screen and wind muff make it very practical, too.
100% agree. I don't even own one. You've got to know the opinions seen here are pure copium. Idk if he's making this video to convince himself or his wife that their summer holiday fund is gone for a very alright compact from 2019, but this time the high res R version. 😂
The ZV1 would sort most of the people trying to buy this camera.
as a ZV1 mk1 owner, i can vouch for that. great quality images/videos on that tiny beast without the hefty pricetag. i bought mine new for ~US$500 because i'm upgrading from my iPhone 13 Pro and to cure my Ricoh GR itch; no ragrets. currently using the camera for street/documentary-style photography and now just started recording myself for some silly short videos and drum covers, that Sony AF is great no cap.
i feel like as though Kai is either on copium or on Fuji's payroll, it just feels forced af lol.
@@sauzefilms 💯 It was usually Lok that gave compacts a real shot through the years, Kai was typically always into the fashion camera style. He did like the X100T when that came out. Almost convinced me to buy it. That's the regret copium he's one though. $1600 for an X100V from 2019 with a high resolution sensor has to sting a bit if you think too deeply about it. 😂
@@-greyyou mean the same camera with completely new internals, new body and latest and newest software?
Anyone even considering the x100 primarily for video and vlogging needs their heads checking, though. It's clearly photography first, offering video improvements because it's part of the sensor / processor package on its higher end ILC cameras.
The Zv1 is for simple vlogging and video, with photography also. Completely opposite priorities. It just can't compete with x100 cameras from even several generations ago for photography. And having used both, thebl ZV1 is rather counterintuitive for on-the-fly adapting to the changing situations, whether light, subject, look. It's really quite clunky. The x100 or other Fuji cameras with dials and always there EVF or OVF it takes getting used to but then it's a question of a few seconds only.
Different cameras for different kinds of shooters. I've recommended the ZV1 to people that aren't really into photography and just want something small for primarily better video than their phones. The x100 is really for people that enjoy the process itself and know their way around a higher end camera but want a compact and discrete alternative.
People that just like the looks will be happy enough to start with, but really they'd be better off with something else. Really into video and want to take it up a notch, also add a thousand or two to the price of the ZV1. But as a simple, compact package its a good upgrade for most smartphone users or upgraders from older compact cameras.
@@brownbear100 no I mean the X100VI which is basically in significantly upgraded in every way except for IBIS and mega pixels. 😂
I bought a used Leica Q to replace my X100F, after handling the V. I stand by that choice.
Peak defign's micro clutch worked great for my x100v
fuji xe2, 3 or 4 with the 27 mm lens?
Ricoh GR III is very fragile with it's retractable lens. The ribbon cable inside that handles focus and shutter got bent inside my Ricoh GR and it was no longer usable, it's a common issue. I'd go for Fujifilm x70 since it has no outer moving parts.
for me, the soft release button helps a lot, because on my x100f, i kinda have to dig my finger into it to take the photo, with the soft release its easier 🤣 i have only one camera the x100f since 2017, kinda wish its a 28 instead of a 35, other than that i love it very much, the optical is way better than evf, im left eye dominant so not having to put down the camera to see the scene helps a lot, love you & lok's videos! ✌️
Sorry you aren’t too keen on the 35mm point of view. I’m the opposite of you. I don’t like the 28mm FOV. It is too wide. I have to get too close to my subjects. Also I have to be more aware of the edges of the frame.

Don't forget the Olympus Pen F!
I know it's hella old now, but how does the Canon G16 compare?
Wishing I would have preordered mine the first hour since I was awake but I waiting the next day😂
I think the Sigma fp is also compact, if it is combined with a small lens. Perfect for videos, okay for stills too. But of course no optical view finder.
I used to own the fuji x10, it was a great little camera. the filters where great back then too. but not exactly pocketable. im waiting for a new sony rx1. for now i just use the zv1.
So you're saying the best camera is my xiaomi 14 ultra because it's a Leica, has lots of megapixels, has a choice of focal lengths, and is also the most compact, even with a grip and filters tweaked?
the ricoh will still always be one of my favortite cameras I've ever owned. I used to have an x100(I can't remember which one I had), and I just never loved it.
I think the original shutter button sits a bit too low for my hand posture. The added height with a separate shutter button is that it feels more comfortable to press it down, especially when you use a thumb grip.
The red button also fits to ok because the VI in the name is red. Also there are just a few thumb grips that fit my grip and in black they were sold out. So I have a red thumb grip, red shutter button and the red VI on it. Aesthetically it fits well together
Leica D-Lux 7 not a good alternative?
I agonized over the compact camera a few days ago, but ended up doing a triple take. Because both Ricoh and Fuji are at a premium and very hard to get. This made me rope in the purchase of the Leica Q3, but adjusted the sensor to 36 megapixels.😇
Ricoh GR3 is better. The portability = more usage.
Coping is hard, isn't it?
@@lordofgonzo Depends. I own both and they both feel great. But GR3 gets far more usage for me b/c of the portability factor alone.
Love my GR III a true pro tool in a pocket.
There is the Olympus Pen F (The digital one, not film) in the $200-$300 if you want interchangeable lens, IBIS, EVF and in a similar size to the X100. Just pair with an appropriate prime lens of your choice.
pen f would be great if you don't mind m43. I have one and bring it everywhere. but if they make a pen f ii would be great but I doubt it.
the new olympus ep7 is also great i think for compact.
the other one is sony rx1 also great it is fullframe
If they could have put PDAF in the F, I'd have it already. I'd probably still get the EM5III until then personally. Sacrifice a little fun for a little less frustration.
The EP and EPL lines are great too, same problem though. Even the ZV1 has Sony PDAF.
what about the sigma dp merrills/quattros ;) ;) ;)
What about an x-e4 with a 27mm or a sony zv-e10 with some f2.8 pancake? Might be more interesting alternatives to a x100vi for those who would not consider a 3000 euro Leica.
Not only does Kai have a huge expensive camera collection, he also has a couple Goros pendants on his necklace. Those can go up to $3500 USD for just one of them. Huge flex, Kai. I see you.
I really hope these two are doing this thirty years from now.
Why are the earlier editions never mentioned or considered? I am still very happy running my X100F and that thing has proven to be quite the camera even in 2024.
another vote for the X70. Had it from new and use it when not wanting to lug Nikon FX gear, and can't believe how much used ones go for now. As others have said an updated version would be great... except it won't have the X-Trans II... and so let it begin...
Thought of one but the price really put me off …anyway the waiting list is huge in the UK and I reckon even if you put your name down now it would be probably two or three years before you got one. I’m quite happy with my XE 3 with a pancake lens ,more versatile than the x100 6 and I think probably a little smaller, job done.
Tbh you can stick any equivelant 35mm lens on any camera with a decent fast aperture and you can have the equivelant of the x100vi for photography. I've no interest in a fixed focal range camera but good luck to those who are seeking one out.
I'd pick a Nikon Z30 + 24f1.7 or a Canon M6II + 22f2 for a third of the price personally. Better value, better performance in most categories.
It’s a completely different experience though. You’d have to give it a try. Doesn’t have to be the latest model. I have an X100f that’s pretty much always with me
So many small lenses out there available for most mirrorless cameras. Though I wish Sony would redesign their 50mm f1.8. That thing is light but bulky.
@@matthiasj.3332 I had the original x100 many years ago and found a fixed focal length to be limiting for my preferences.
@@matthiasj.3332 I used to shoot the X70 and I agree on the experience, but after going back to the Ricoh PSAM I don't miss it. If fun gets you out shooting then that's all that matters - it's not better just different, and fresh might be all you need.
This is surprisingly the only compact that review tube will praise. So I'm all for it if it drives attention back to compacts. Most of the big channels didn't even give the Nikon Z30 a chance, nor the M6II, nor the a7C. They usually just complain about how their hands are too big. 😂
also fujifilm xe4 sells now for more than when it was new.
After watching this video, I want the Ricoh GRIII X even more.
Panasonic is gonna announce the S9 soon which seems like a direct competitor to the Fuji x100. and the s9 is full frame
Awesome😊
What about the Nikon Zf, I think I like it better than the X100 VI, love your channel though
Id love a fuji x100IV but if theres a camera id love more it would be the sony rx1r. I know its got an evf but you can buy a seperate hot shoe optical finder for it too. It looks perfect but no longer made
I still use my Fuji X30 ... Good luck finding one for 200-309 😮
It's such a nice versatile, compact camera
Is it really compact? it still looks kinda chonky man.
I feel like the X100VI is almost a perfect camera for versatility. I just wish it had a focus scale like the Leica Q so I could manually zone focus.
It is not completely the same, but I have much older Fujis and you can easily zone focus with every the lens using the digital focus scale in the evf or lcd, and/or the Af lock mode.
You can zone focus. You just need to toggle the focus scale in the settings.
@@konmorse I'm used to looking down at the lens or feeling the focusing position with a tab (coming from Leica M). The all-digital interface makes sense in the existing X system but I think is missing a few convenience features
The price for X100VI is ridiculous
Yet they sell all they can make, crapitalisim

my 300€ alternative to the X100VI?
Well... An X100S ! Those are the cheapest X100 cameras you can find, as the original if taking back some value becoming more of a collector's item more than a used camera nowadays.
The X100S has all the improvements coming from the newer sensor and processor (which weren't upgraded going to the X100T), and it doesn't have that "first" aura than the X100 has, being cheaper than both the X100 and X100T, but performing just as good as the X100T, and being a sizeable upgrade over the X100 ! Best of both worlds.
I picked mine up locally in France for 300€, even came with 6 batteries, a dual charger, a couple of straps and a leather case !
Sony A7C or even A7III or IV with an appropriate compact prime lens make superb alternatives. Quite frankly the OM-5 is just as good as the Fuji in my opinion and all these are fairly compact with compact primes fitted. All these can be fitted with a massive choice of lenses and the sensors can easily be cleaned, which you can’t do with fixed lens cameras. Then there’s the Lumix LX100 II if you can still find one, which has a fixed short zoom lens while there is the badge engineered but more ‘luxury’ Leica D-Lux 7 with a rumoured updated Leica original D-Lux 8 to come within the next eight weeks.
I still love my Panasonic GX9 with Panasonic Leica 15mm,
I just can't wait until we have a GRiv. The GRiii is so old at this point. I love mine, it's almost always in my pocket, but it is feeling a bit old at this point.
A used Sony RX1 is also a great alternative and full frame
Dynamic duo
if you put filter and shade on the x100vi (as you should) it doesnt fit in a pocket anymore
The RX1Rii is still the best... annoyed Sony haven't introduced a iii. It's still a great formula
Kai is now officially a fuji fan boy
Probably paid by Fuji
It's like he has been infected by the spores and become a religious extremist. The pure hyperbole and nonsense opinions in this video is wild. Even Lok isn't convinced. 😂
I feel evangelise. Do you have a moment to speak of our lord and saviour the X100?
This video was made so Kai can be invited for the upcoming X-summit in Australia. 😉
Until his next Leica video
Ricoh gr for image quality, fujifilm for build quality. I own ricoh gr l, X70, X100F, XE1.
Ordered mine from a well known UK photographic store on the day it was officially announced... still waiting patiently 😞
Damn €1500 for a tiny capable-but not-so-capable camera is insane.
Kai went wardrobe shopping in Taiwan ;)
How is this better than a modern pro iPhone?
So, of all the alternatives that may be better, the Fuji is the betterest? 🙂
Here's an idea, a new version of X70 please.... Fuji just abandoned such a beautiful design unfortunately :(
agree
Since Fuji has basically gotten behind it seems in production, some of these alternatives (like the X10) Have gone up in price. I can't see to find a legit used one for $200, but there are some available for about $400..... At that pirce though, I'd probably spend a little more and get an XPro1. Or an E-X series body (even though they are not technically the same since the X-E has an EVF not the hybrid OVF/EVF).
If only Panasonic made an LX100 Mark III. Versatility beast.
shame that canon killed eos m series, but I think M5/M6/m100/m50 with 22mm pancake lens are still unbeatable
(still using M6 II and keep buying the rest of ef-m lens)
Exactly! I look at the Fuji and and really can’t see what all the fuss is about
Ricoh gr next version gotta have a pop up optical viewfinder
I hope you’re right. There is some hope as Ricoh did come out with the GRiiiX for those of us not wanting the 28mm FOV. That being said, I’m not optimistic about Ricoh adding an EVF to their GR series. These cameras are designed with the thought of one hand use.

I truly believe that 80% of the tik tokers buying these would have been fine with a ZV1F. They are buying these for the film look, which to them is literally just a cloudy white balance and smudgey haze on the lens. 😂
The x100 takes pics with Leica like colors and it also looks good. Sony, Nikon, Canon shot themselves in the foot by neglecting this segment.
When everything in Instagram is in clean digital HD, the only way to stand out is by adding filters/simulations.

The biggest problem with the X100* cameras is dust on the sensor which can't be cleaned off unless you send it away. I have an X100T but I use an X-E1 because I can clean the sensor of the X-E1.
