Alana, let's focus on what's really important. Shohei Ohtani is currently rehabbing his second UCL surgery on his throwing arm. He has never been in the MLB postseason. I couldn't care less about him participating in the Home Run Derby; what matters is getting him to October. If you want to expand the game, it's about having the stars play in the playoffs, not the Home Run Derby. Also, I want to see Ohtani pitch again soon. The HRD is joke anyways.

Well said. Time to just say no to the insipid MLB marketing stooges.

Plus, doesn't HRD participation often equate to 2nd half season slumps. I'd prefer for my rooting interests to stay away from the derby, injury or not.

If the All star game was in New York or LA and Judge was participating as well than I would say yes Ohtani should as well, but it’s not and Judge doesn’t want to do it, so I respect Ohtani’s decision not to do it this year.

Shohei said in an interview yesterday that he is UNLIKELY to participate in the HR derby after discussing with the medical staff. I think it's a good decision on his part. He'll have many more opportunities before his career is over. Instead of seeing who can hit the most home runs, I want a contest to determine who can hit the LONGEST home run.

@@user-ll9qk2el4d yeah, but what I don't like about today's sabermetrics is that everything seems to be Projected, back in Kongs day those 500 to 550ft homers were actual distances! Look on UA-cam for the 3rd homer of the game Kingman hit in the Cubs 23-22 loss to the Phillies at Wrigley field back in 1979 and you have to listen to the announcers full description of the blast!

Alanna continues her awful take on the home run derby. This is a vanity exhibition competition where top athletes are expected to perform near superhuman level feats of strength and athleticism at maximum effort for an extended period of time. That is why people watch it, because it’s an incredible physical feat. Comparing the effort level required to sneezing or the importance of the derby to the WBC is a bad faith argument. They are not equivalent.
There is no reason for Ohtani to participate when rehabbing from his second major arm surgery. It isn’t in the interest of Ohtani or the Dodgers, only for marketing executives at MLB and the media.

Always loved Alana’s time with Dodgers, but sorry she has to be on this side of the coin with ASG and Derby. First off, no one is making the decision on Ohtani and derby except Ohtani…he is going to be electric in October. That is priority #1 for him….and Dodger fans. I am kind of over the derby anyway, with all these rules. I can recall what the ASG did for city and community of San Diego in 1978. A young franchise hosted a real event where the city was absolutely lit starting with the batting practice/ players workout the day before. Everyone was buzzing , the game itself was okay, and the Padres finished above .500 for the first time in history. Watching the players bomb the second deck at Jack Murphy Stadium batting practice was transformational for baseball in SD. And it was…free. See how you feel about it next year, Shohei. Lets focus on a ring.

Judge is leading the Major Leagues in the Triple Crown Stats at the moment. The last player to lead both "Major" leagues in the Triple Crown Stats was Mickey Mantle in 1956. As rare and hard as it is to win the triple crown it would be great to see someone accomplish the even harder feat of leading the entire ML in Triple Crown.
