This oke's passion for architect got me thinking about Wakanda! the idea of building utopian structures in SA, which are not only influenced by positive cultural Designs, but each and every aspect about the designs and utility of the structures serves a valuable function for the human collective
Sechaba is an exceptional architecture lecturer whose influence greatly impacted my first year at Wits. His take on African architecture totally shaped how I design today. Brilliant interview
Lesley Lokko. Ghanaian-Scottish atchitect. In 2015, Lokko established the Graduate School of Architecture (GSA) at University of Johannesburg - an African school dedicated to postgraduate architecture education. She returned to Accra, Ghana, in 2021 and established the African Futures Institute, a postgraduate school of architecture and public events platform.
An episode where African architecture that makes sense here is explored would be nice. What would an African estate look like? What does building without sharp corners look like? How does it work? What does a luxury hut made with mud look like? How is it seemingly harder to secure and own shelter now than it was in the past?
Douglas McGavin (DMA) Calderwood attended King Edward School in Johannesburg, graduated in architecture from Wits University and also studied at the prestigious MIT in the USA. He worked as a head at the CSIR and helped the Apartheid government to design the township homes and general spatial planning of townships.
Absolutely enjoyed watching this episode! It's truly refreshing to witness fellow architects generously sharing their insights with the public. This kind of knowledge-sharing not only enriches our professional community but also promotes a culture of learning and collaboration. Kudos to Dr Sechaba for contributing to the collective growth!
I am just glad that this conversation happened. Townships were not designed for black people to thrive, they were designed after the concept of Ghettos. The word Ghetto itself means to restrict, it makes sense in retrospect that there are so many restrictions in the townships that one must overcome to succeed. Dope conversation
A collaboration and a conversation that I never expected but am so thankful it happened. Such inspiring minds dropping gems in such a short video. Need Sechaba back and on Penuels larger platform. Thank you🙏🏾
As a coloured from Cape Town an in the architectural profession im happy to see that you have a built environment professional on. People always talk about Apartheid Spacial Planning and we have all these people try to work on solutions to help us move forward as a country but until we have all these skills coming together with how they created Apartheid but just do the reverse we arent ever going to get the changes we need. When i say the reserve i mean using architectural and urban design with policies and politics to create something that benefits us all instead of oppressing. Once that happens then we can only fully break free. Please when you have him on next time get into the bones of the built environment and all those things. Super excited for when that ep comes
Mr Penuel the black pen, i wanted to ask, in the insidious system we psychologically forced to be in and play by the rules we didn't make, how would the conscious black middle class society go about creating something like an orania but in our own way, or a mini wakanda?
No Mr Penuel The Black Pen. 30 minutes of talking about politics with a guy that could amaze like minded people about the intriguing nature of Architecture. No my elder brother, that's a bit unfair. Not for him, but for your ego. You did yourself a disservice by not immersing yourself in the architect's mind. Try again. Give him at least 3 hours. Trust me you won't be disappointed. Thank you for your time. Enjoy your day my friend. Truly, I humbly thank you from the bottom of my heart for what you have done for me.
Yoh Pen, unrelated......i would actually like to have sit down with a spiritualist ( A credible one that is). Would love to hear your philosophy on spirituality, religion and how they influence our lives and culture. Cheers...👊
More could have been said. you need to relax into topics in longform because some of the stuff you mentioned from both of you was skimming and not diving so maybe sit joe Rogan style and just delve. people don't know how powerful architects are. they shape the everyday reality in many ways.
Exe Penuel The Black Pen it's Wanda Hischild here from Mpumalanga in a village called Kwaggafontein next to KwaMhlanga... I've been going through your channel and The Hustler's Corner podcast looking for an episode where you were venting and were frustrated about Eskom, Cryil and the connection between him, eskom, the companies which benefit from loadshedding linked to him, can you plz assist with that episode and share a link to it plz...thanks in advance
Would you say urban whites have problems assimilating to Africanness? While rural or small town whites do assimilate in places in the free state most can speak african languages even in the eastern cape there are a lot of atholl trollips, same with urban Zulus from ethekwini, pmb or jhb they got no problems assimilating to other tribes, most that are unable are deep rural. Are the lived experiences of urban people more important than lived experiences of small and rural town people
I wish the guest was a little bit closer to the microphone. Pen, don't you have a sound guy with headset monitoring the sound while you guys recording they can spot if the quality of the sound from microphones is satisfying.
Ai… the black patrons concept is not make sure. A bit more creativity is required here. The Black Patrons route seems like a dead-end because the people you’re looking to for help were out there by your very oppressors. Cyril’s a clear Manchurian candidate. His brother-in-law, Patrice Motsepe, is a beneficiary of boer capital. The Hersov family funded the Motsepe’s then Motsepe went on to become one of Sanlam/Santam’s biggest BEE beneficiaries. Penuel’s own Vuyo Jack is suspect. What change is he implementing at the PIC which is very clearly investing black pension money into European business - plunging us into further servitude. Why does the World Economic Forum eff with him so much? These men you look to for help will not bite the hand that feeds them. You understand the problem but we should spend a tiny bit more time brainstorming because this solution doesn’t seem like it’ll fly
Honoured to have sat with Dr Sechaba Maape... a brilliant mind. Need to sit with him again soon!
Dj Sbu gave you a chance when it did not make sense, please stop with the arrogance

This thing of separated houses, am busy now building my homestead in the village. I want many small houses but my wife wants one big house.
It would be pretty interesting if Ntate Maape had a consultancy that you could chat to in order to help you find a design that you both love
