Thanks, we realised later it was a mattress but Dan was already asleep when I found out 😅 we also didn't know at the time there was a restaurant cart on board, but on our future trains we find this out and use them 😊

Обычно, когда они узнают что вы иностранец, то завышают цену. Также будьте внимательны на рынках/базарах и вокзалах - в таких местах орудуют карманники. И еще. Если вы берете еду на дорогу рядом с вокзалом, будь то супермаркет/магазин или берете с рук (на улице ), то обязательно смотрите не испорчена ли она. Продавцы заведомо специально могут продавать испорченную еду, ибо знаю, что вы не приедете возвращать товар, ибо будете уже в пути

Hey guys, you should have taken a faster train! The fastest one could have gotten you to Astana in 11-12 hours, which is twice as quick. And it isn't expensive at all, probably around $40 per passenger. I think this one cost you around $25 per person, right?
@@AshAndDan. there is also a third compromise option - train between Almaty and Astana (soviet style as well), but everything is fully renovated - wagons look really fresh. Much better equipment (for example washing set like in hotels, even Wi-Fi is available almost all the road, toilets are clean, etc) and much better service there. In addition the train is a bit faster)

@@AshAndDan.Talgo train is much worse actually. It's like it was designed for midgets. Some trains have new cars that are much larger than standard cars. But if you get a standard Talgo, it's not going to be a pleasant journey.
I often had to travel on such a train from Astana to Atyrau and back, it’s 36 hours of travel one way. Usually, halfway through the journey, I began to curse myself for being too thrifty and ask myself why I didn’t take a plane ticket.

There is a restaurant-wagon somewhere in the middle of the train where you can try different local proper meals. Also a separate wagon-bar where you can have a drink and meet different interesting people no joke))) But for the next time I suggest to get a modern Spanish train called "Talgo", a european train but not that "vintage" like a soviet one LOL
Nice experience guys, having a ride on an old soviet train, the weather was nice, that's why you liked it, but the cold truth is that being there when the heatwave stars is a torture and disrespect for yourself, as there are no conditioning units and an awful smell of toilet spreads across the car. It's not always possible to slepp at night as people make noise and nobody of the train staff stops them. The same train Baiterek would be more comfortable, so it isn't express yet, but I may understand the availability of tickets for it, not easy to get them.
Definitely an awesome experience but yes, if you are looking for extra comfort you should book the more modern train. However everyone should try the Soviet one once 🚂

Yes I think this was the only time in our 3 weeks in Kazakhstan we got tricked by the price of things. Everyone else was very honest with their prices other than this train station shop.
Kazakh people aren't drinkers, it's the Russians who introduced us to vodka and it led to the huge problem of alcoholism amongst post soviet countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, minorities in nowadays Russia, cause we don't have the gene for alcohol tolerance, so it's quite offensive to be known as "alcoholic" country 😔 Our ancestors drank only fermented milk - kymyz that had the toned down effect of alcohol

Kazakh people aren't drinkers, it's the Russians who introduced us to vodka and it led to the huge problem of alcoholism amongst post soviet countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, minorities in nowadays Russia, cause we don't have the gene for alcohol tolerance, so it's quite offensive to be known as "alcoholic" country 😔 Our ancestors drank only fermented milk - kymyz that had the toned down effect of alcohol
