  • While it's become obvious that traction is the number one issue to overcome with our 5 speed 4.0 XJ, we had no idea how bad it would get after giving it just a minor initial tune.
    Any hope of working with the Jeep's original open rear vanished when it literally freewheeled for 400 feet during our latest trip to the dragstrip.

    As someone that has been doing ECU tuning on older Honda cars, it is nuts how precise you can be with your ignition timing curve and how much even small changes can make in the way the engine responds. I was riding around with a friend of mine, helping him tune his 1993 Acura Integra that we added VTEC to, and he was complaining about how the engine felt off VTEC. I added just 6 degrees of timing from about 2,000 RPM to about 4,400 RPM (the engine goes into VTEC at 4,500 RPM if the throttle position is above 50%) and suddenly his Integra broke the front tires loose in 2nd gear when he nailed the throttle from about 2,500 RPM, and that change made the VTEC crossover MUCH smoother, which is what I was shooting for. I love tinkering with mechanical distributors, but there is no denying that ECU tuning is nice being able to instantly feel the difference after just clicking a few things.

    The way to launch a peg legger is to slightly drag the brakes during the launch. Fun fact: with practice you can find the sweet spot of brake drag that will actually have it power both wheels like a locker. Try it, it’s your perfect zero dollar hack/mod.

    • @86chrysler5thave

      not as easy to do when you have 3 pedals.....

    • @Thomas63r2
      @Thomas63r2 11 днів тому

      @@86chrysler5thave It only takes a little practice - think of it like heel toe pedal control control of a manual transmission sports car around a road race. It does take practice and can be awkward depending on pedal designs - and yes, you have to operate the brake pedal and the accelerator pedal at the same time with your right foot. Alternatively you can modify any car with a center pull parking brake control to not engage the ratchet mechanism that locks the parking brake until the release button is pressed. Without the locking ratchet you can experiment to find the optimum amount of parking brake drag needed for a launch. All you are trying to do is to slow down the one spinning wheel so that power can also be sent to the other wheel. Its an old time zero cost drag race modification. Tony is old enough that he should already know about this.

    • @cjolney
      @cjolney 10 днів тому

      @86Chrysler5thave then use the parking brake. What's next?

    • @Thomas63r2
      @Thomas63r2 10 днів тому

      @@cjolney Before using your parking brake for launch control you should disable the ratchet locking part - so that as soon as you release pressure on the handle it releases the parking brake. This only works on open differential cars that have parking brakes on the driven wheels, not on the cars like older Mopars that have the parking brake on the transmission output shaft. With a peg leg you can actually get it to react like a tight posi if you can slow down the spinning wheel. With practice you will get a really nice launch. Here are the basics: partially apply the parking brake and launch, releasing after your car has gone 20' to 30'. If you still have a lot of tire spin, then increase your pressure on the parking brake during launch. If you don't have any tire spin on launch then try less pressure on the parking brake to find the sweet spot.

      Ya. That's where those little acrion cameras come in real handy.
      I work for one of the major automotive manufacturers up here near Detroit. I work at their proving grounds in R & D. We use those cameras all the time. Not sure off hand what model # they are but, we have wireless remotes for them. Just before ready to run, hit the play button.

      @DeansofNomadica I got a cheap action cam at walmart. It couldn't take the vibration of being on a 4 wheeler rack, it video was pixelated.
      That was on a foreman 400, not a banshee or quadzilla.

    Yes poisi units helped, but spring work was more important, you build each leaf spring to reduce the problem,, weaker left side recurved leaf's and increased curve on the other side, maybe a snubber (Mopar issue), and it was gold.

    This may have been said I haven't had time to read the comments. But being that it's a five-speed it only has 307 gearing and automatic would have 355 so that would be an easy swap but no limited slip. Another option would be an explorer 97 96ish junkyard axle would come with 373s and limited slip. And if it's a 4x4 you can get the front axle out of a Grand Cherokee zj with 373s, because it had a Dana 30 front axle

  • @chuckkropkeiii5837
    @chuckkropkeiii5837 15 днів тому

    Just keep in mind the spline count on the axles for the 8.25. I want to say before 97 was 27 spline and 97 and newer was 29 spline. 1996 may have been a transition year meaning later where 29 spline. You may buy a whole axle and it don't matter but if you just buy the sure grip by it self beware.

    I have a 4WD with an Eaton locker rear. No off road vehicle should be sold with an open diff. I rarely use the 4WD, I just operate the transfer case from time to time to keep it free. A 2WD with a locker is really close to a 4wd with open diffs. - Random stuff, I know.

    I like these jeeps I had one and barely fit in it. I’m 6’ 4 and 380lbs so I’m too big for them. The one I had only set me back $350 and after an ecu change it ran but not well. The thing was spent but it still had pep. My transmission made noise and it needed a new wire harness for the injectors. I’d love a car with the 4.0 with a carburetor and stick it’s be perfect in something like a dart or duster

    Eaton TrueTrac is the best option for our XJs. I've worn out 3 Auburn LSDs. Oh yeah, since 96 was the bastard year, you better check out how many splines the rear axles have. Early 96s had 27-splines, Late 96s had 29-splines.
