In James Beards' cookbook and autobiography, Delights and Prejudices, he uses sweet onions for this recipe, and the insides spread with sweet butterr. These were served at cocktail parties by his catering company. They were a big thing in the 1950's. Try again using a sweet onion if available in Korea.
It tastes like "Summer" and filled with nostalgia. Over 5 decades ago my grandmother made these for me as a kid in Eastern Europe. Even the green edge, but because we couldn't waste precious food there were no "round" shenanigans, just trimmed crusts. 😢😍
Jacque Pepin is the man, his onion sandwich is a great Video. I have watched it too. On a side note, Jacque Pepin was always on PBS on KCET (create) in my 20's when I lived in Los Angeles. They also played classical music in the evenings. The rare good use of government funds.
it's a tea sandwich, so yeah, I've seen lots of them (and this one is fantastic). cute little cut-out sandwiches rolled in herbs are super-nice. I like sweet onions for this particular one and chives are extra-good, but there's nothing wrong with parsley! Jacques Pepin is the man.
Sandwiches don't need to have cold cuts/meats all the time. A little veggie/fruit sandwich with mayo hits from time to time. Tomato and Onion is my favorite mix. I do dab in the occasional cucumber with pickle. You just gotta find the right mix that suits your palette. Pretty good as a thrifty struggle meal in those college days, too.
Tried this today and yes it’s really good and different. Jacque also made another sandwich using same technique, but with thinly sliced radishes and salted butter.
My grandmother used to make these back in the 80s. I'm almost certain she used the Pepin method but she also sliced them into smaller bits and the mayo and butter did a lot of the heavy lifting taste-wise. I know I'm tasting nostalgia but they were great when she would use yellow onions and mayo (though, Kewpie probably hits better) and she'd use soft butter around the sides to line the sandwich with parsley. I hated onions back then when I was a kid, but I would devour those things whenever she made them.
I recommend everyone try to do delicious things with crusts when they cut them. Fry in butter and dip in roasted garlic or spaghetti sauce with lots of melted cheese, dip in hot butter then slather on some jelly. Tons of ways to use it!
ever since i got a higher resolution monitor i been wishing you uploaded in 1440 or 4k. this sandwich looks kinda crazy but i bet i'd like it. as far as the wasting of bread is concerned yk i'd just eat the crust or more likely just leave it on there
My grandmother loved sandwiches like this. Onion, or tomato, or watercress (with butter, not mayo). All very fresh, mild and refreshing (high water content). ❤
I have made these, and they are surprisingly good. Just let the leftover bread dry out for a day or two on your countertop, then run it over a box grater... free bread crumbs. You should try cucumber sandwich. Another old school artifact that is way better than you would think.
the bread size is important because you get the exact amount of onion in each bite. Listening to you eat this is amazing, you can imagine all the textures and flavour.
This sandwich has become viral since the French chef has posted. I bet it's really good with a red onion. We've been eating onion sandwiches for years.
Lol I'm from the southeastern US and I grew up watching my brother eat sweet onion, mayonnaise, and mustard sandwiches. It's basically how we would make fried bologna sandwiches minus the bologna. I have grown to love onion as I've gotten older, but still not enough to make an entire sandwich with it lol.
i'd definitely use the crust as breadcrumbs, stores forever when dried out. You could even use the exact same ingredients/leftovers for some fried onion. Onions rings -> cover with batter (mayo, parsley, salt) -> cover with breadcrumbs -> throw it in the pan or deep fryer
I saw Jacques video on this a while back and wanted to try it...but still have yet to do so. I did however try his recipe for Anchovy Pasta & that was so good. I make it all the time. Gunna have to try this one out now.
I think the white bread is important to the combination of taste. I’ve had this before and the combination of mayo, sweet onion and white bread makes a nice combo.
I am going to try this fo sho! I've seen bread cut close to the crust all around, a little bigger too! Try to find a square onion that might be difficult, tho 😮 did the sell squonions 🔳 🌰 great stuff loved the video
I would definitely use the whole slice of bread, and put inside the parsley, along with the onion and mayonnaise. I don't think the flavor would vary significantly.
I would crank it up a notch and put a thin Patty on top of that and then another bread Patty and that would be it that would take it over the top beyond anything with the parsley roll😊😊
Next time use the whole slice bread...add more onions and Mayo the edges so you can get parsley on it. Even consider adding parsley on top of the onions too.
I made this like 15 years ago and I was not a fan. I’m gonna try it again and give it a second shot. Interesting you used Kewpee mayo. That might give it a little extra twang. I think I might try one with parsley and one with cilantro.
Why’s no one also doing the doing the radish one? In the video I saw he did the onion first then the radish right after. Preference? I really want to try both, they both look delicious!
People in the hood drink city punch and sugar sandwiches and people stay quiet. A famous chef puts some some onion and mayo on some bread and it’s revolutionary 😂😂😂😂
Hi Ben, thanks again for your video. i love this concept simple easy and very tasty. it's a pity that some people react so rudely to you, you should block those people immediately. Send you love and peace.✌️❤️🥰🌺💫
All I could think about was cheese and onion sandwich while watching this too😂 I actually was going to make it then realized I ordered pizza a few minutes before 😅
Seriously it's the best sandwich ever!!!!!!!! I prefer butter, mayonnaise is better with thin fresh garlic especially with a head cold 😊 get you food processor out make some fresh bread crumbs
Made this today. Been wanting to try this ever since watching Jacques’ video on it. Absolutely delicious! I used chives and loved it. Gonna try parsley next. I also went pretty thick with the onion and it was perfect!
Parsley adds a nice peppery flavor, I bet. Some salt would be good too. You probably need a lot of mayonnaise relative to onion in this. If you like onion, mayo and white bread, what could be wrong with a sandwich like this?

what a great memory you have there, man!
Me too. Best sandwich ever! Cost effective and nostalgic. Finger foods for parties. The crust cut off square instead of round and into smaller size.

I actually love when ben makes his food. Different from trying a fast food item.
I tried this a few hours ago i did not regret at all, please try it, it is really good.
I saw that onion sandwich video just few hours ago too haha
the baguette hat looks really good on you ben! givin some monsieur vibes

Getting both sweet onion and green onions for some oyakodon action👍
man's got on the Goya cap for this afternoon tea meal

fruit with mayo 🤢
@@werrutkyupnextI think the op meant tomato lol
I always make Tomato sandwiches with mayo, onion, oil/vinegar, and feta cheese 😋 sometimes an avocado goes in as well
@@grayfalcon3032 yeah probably lol
@@werrutkyupnext tomatoes are fruits. so are avocados.

You needed a Pepsi with this meal but we all know how you feel about that 😂
He couldn't even tell the difference between coke and pepsi lol, switched them and said pepsi was better thinking it was coke

My favorite is onion, tomato and cheese sandwiches. You can even eat the crusts. A delicious low-key meal for sure.

Ben can make the simplest foods to make you want to eat that at the moment. Keep doing your thing!
unexpectably delicious
Simple is sometimes better. Will try this next week when bills are paid
That actually looks good I love raw onion 😂
Dressed up like Larry David and asking "what's the deal with that sandwich?" like Seinfeld
I love how this guy is so chill
the bread size is important because you get the exact amount of onion in each bite. Listening to you eat this is amazing, you can imagine all the textures and flavour.
Use the bread edges to make bread pudding. An easy delicious desert.
Best food youtuber and you are really underrated too. I always liked to eat while watching him😂 Keep it up
1.2 million subs is underrated now?
@@Lewis232921 Look at his views
Maybe chop up the leftover bread and use it deep fry the sandwich might as well upgrade it with some meat and cheese👏👏
hell yeah dude this rules. ive come across that video a few times now and watched it every time lol.
Sandwich was first made by Irma Rhode, NY Times chef. Beard made it famous.
Considering the homie likes 98% of what he eats...
Definitely lighter in skin tone 👦🏼. 😂
All the more reason to take his word when he says something is ass
i mean he follows the trends, and funky sounding korean dishes, with some exceptions, but you cant make bad korean food
@@Nutcruncher Bro, not being critical, but, a LOT of what he eats, including this, isn't Korean food
