- Steve Caballero, Tony Hawk, Christian Hosoi, Mike McGill. These were household names for kids growing up in the 80s and following the skate culture coming out of Southern California. Grant Brittain was also part of the same scene, but as the photographer. He was the big brother who captured these kids.... when they were kids. Grant has been photographing the skate culture for over 38 years and has worked with most of the major skateboard magazine, including being the photo editor for Transworld Skateboarding (TWS) for many years. Although he primarily shoots for the skateboard industry, he's more than just a 'skateboard' photographer. Please enjoy my interview with the legendary Grant Brittain as we talk about his prolific career, his first camera, and his passion for film photography.
This interview was recorded after the Film Paideia Conference hosted by The Darkroom in San Clemente California, and co-hosted by Beers and Cameras. Thanks to Philip of the Darkroom for the event, and thanks to Juan of Beers and Camera for being my videographer.

Grant is the MAN! Absolute legend.
hey Matt, he totally is. You would have met him if you came!! Maybe at the next event :-)
this guy is a legend. thanks for that. could have listened to him talk for hours
I want to hang out with him in his garage!!
I came across your videos and been watching since 3am... then came across this one. Grant Brittain was my idol when I was a kid. So great to see this! Thank you!
Great to not only see an interviewer who was knowledgeable enough to keep up with his subject but also have great chemistry. Grant is a legend and you didn't even skip a beat. So great.
Thanks for watching. Oh ya Grant is just one of the guys and is still a camera nerd.
Thanks for doing this interview. Loved every second.
Howly shit man, Grant Brittain is the BIG one!
Thank you so much for that episode!
Wish more thought was put into this interview. Grant is the man!
the decision to do the interview wasn't planned but spontaneous, so it's either this or no interview at all...
Brilliant photos and a super cool guy.
Thx for that. Such a great person!
Love it. YES! Grant is the man. Love ALL the pics he has! Thanks BHT
Great video ... Very interesting ... Thank you !!!
Legend. Love this guys photography, both now and when I was reading Transworld off the newsstand. Would love to hear him talk about cameras and lenses he used back then.
he's a great guy as well. Next video we'll talk gear :-)
bigheadtaco I’m curious about his which film bodies he chose. And about his wide angle lenses... he used what looks like an 18mm or 20mm at times.
Oh man what a legend, someone that has given so much to photography and skateboarding it’s just incredible to see. I would spend hours looking at those skate magazines just for the photos.
Fantastic interview, fantastic showcase of pics, digging the B&W style a lot. It works wonders for a "casual chat in the parking lot" type of thing
thanks. Yes I thought it was appropriate considering so many kids skateboard in parking lots :-)
Amazing video. Thanks Take!
Excellent!!!! Thanks Taco!
Great interview!
Thank you for getting this interview and making this video.
amazing photos
yes Grant not only takes great images, many of them are of cultural and historical significance.
More of skateboard photographers! This is so nice!! How about Ed Templeton? His wife? Ray Barbee? Aarto Saari? Atiba? Many... can't wait
Thanks Take for this TOP interview. Amazing to see how a great photographer as Grant is still so modest. What a cool person! I like the fact that he still shoots film for his personal work. Very inspiring.
Yes we invited him as a guest but he was actually eager to share his photography and passion for film. We were honoured he did, and also agreed to do this interview in a parking lot!!
Amazing! So many memories of those photographs.
Awesome!!
Great episode Tako...
Brilliant.
Great interview, great video. Thanks Take 👍🏻👍🏻
Great interview! Very level-headed and grounded photographer. His work reminds me of another great skateboard photographer Fred Mortagne in France, who has a new book, “Attraper au Vol” and also works in B&W.
Beautiful work, and I love that he shoots with film. Thanks for sharing
wow what an inspiration!
amazing!
Wow! Very good interview! This gentlemen is amazing, he can transfer hours of sweet in to pristine moments!
I loved listening to this! I wish it was longer :)
Ah, this will make my day... 😊 Thank you, Take! 👍
So interesting. Great work!
You've done it again!! Awesome vid :-)
Nice interview - cool perspective.
He should do a skate photo book.
Great video! Learned something new and interesting; the images are beautiful!
Awesome interview. His work is iconic. It was interesting that his favorite image was also the same one I picked after seeing the selection of images in the intro.
that's a great shot for sure!
Great video! I miss your early vids though, that had the fun animations. Btw, Tri-X was actually available in the 1940's as sheet film... later released in 35mm & 120 roll film in 1954 (as you mentioned).
I'll do more of the silly stuff when I'm with someone I'm more acquainted with...
Grant made me suscribe !
thanks for watching. I'll have to buy Grant a beer!
Not being mean but as an outside critique id wait for a second or two before responding to an interviewer. Sometimes you say yay yay yay over them and it comes off rude. I know you arenr trying to do it but just wanted to provide that insight
first thing that came to my mind too, it's a bit annoying
I agree. Very difficult to watch. Made the interview very unenjoyable!
Ok, I had to stop and say Oh my god this is film not digital images way too damn kool does it matter what camera your using ,lighting or just knowing what should happen and just wait for that moment... If you're going to shoot know your subject or subject matter and if you don't know learn... Oh and know your gear.. Wonderful images I'm a medium shooter out of 10 shots I get 2 sometimes 3 that are spot on... lol
thank you Take for sharing all these (for me/us) legend sof the past and present.
btw are there some female photographers you can present too? just to balance things... ;-)
thanks for commenting and yes, it's harder to find female photographers, but I know they're out there. I did feature food photographer Leila Kwok last year, and I have more female photographers lined up. If anyone has suggestions, please comment below. Thanks.

good job taco!
I thought this was a Benny Hill interview. =-(
