I grew up in a dilapidated steel mill house in Blawnox, PA. We were poor. I wasn’t sure I would get enough food to eat when I was younger. My parents moved us out of that ghetto and gave us a chance to work our way out of poverty. My dad worked two jobs and my mom worked full time while I was in school. They showed me that with determination and hard WORK you can change the trajectory of your life. I got pregnant when I was 17. My son was three months old at my HS graduation. I could have easily been a statistic, taken the welfare and let that become our life. I wanted to prove I could overcome the labels society placed on me. I’m now a Registered Nurse and I worked my ass off to have my nice house and my new Mustang GT. I overcame my situation. It can be done.. I’m proof.
Awesome you had the determination to make a good life for yourself and your child, crazy how different life has generally been depending on which side of 28 you grew up on. Too many don't have the determination or are content. Also, great to see a fellow "yinzer" commenting here

Preach, brother. I'm your age and was raised in abject poverty. At one point my mother 'got overwhelmed' and literally ran away from home. I was homeless on the streets for months. I ate out of dumpsters before, during, and after that. And I had perfect attendance and I was on the honor roll - even while I was homeless. I worked graves through my senior year and still got to class and turned in my homework. With all that, I earned a scholarship. (To community college, but still. It was free.) I've busted my butt all my life to dig out of the pit I was born into. And I freaking WON. I won. I'm so far from that life. But I will say, it hangs with you like a stench. I still fear not having enough food. I still worry about my next meal. I still have a little panic attack every time I pay the bills, even though we've had plenty to cover it all for a long time. I have moments where I'm comfortable and that's probably the best it'll ever be. And yes. I'm white. It wasn't any easier for me to get out than it is for a kid in the hood. (And yes. I spent time in the projects.) I don't have time to deal with my ancestor's bullshit. My life is enough for me to handle. Kids who are hung up on the past just don't have enough challenges in their present. They're just comfortable enough not to struggle too hard to break the chains. But they sure will bitch about it.

There are looser dad's in every race trust that. After I served in the Navy for my career I was exsposed to all races and loved the diversity. Your right about folks not doing their homework. You would think with a month of black history month there would be some actually history learned. The whole world was involved in slaverey and the US was not the last to get rid of it. We were the only country to stop it threw war. The majority of that war was fought between white men and more men were killed in that war than all the other US wars put together. I think it’s mostly generational. We’ve been around long enough to see what they do to us. Well im 38 now, i realized i needed a change at 29 years old i was digging myself in a while that i could not get out of but i truely wanted to change i had to suffer 5 years of fighting myself to actually take a step towards recovery. And its not being lazy its being scared to actually take that step the first thing u need to do is stop living inside your brain that comment u made" im i lazy" im i full of shit? We tend to overthink things and scare us to not looking for help or taking that first step. i will never speak to you in the manner you want because you are already beating yourself mentally, i truly beleave that we are alot stronger then we guve ourselfs credit. You just need to surround yourself with positive people and fight the old way of thinking change your everyday habits, habits meaning your surroundings your day to day . In other words, how long did you struggle & fight with yourself resisting change? Because no one just wakes up one day & decides to suddenly become super disciplined & motivated, right?? Very rarely I’ve heard of someone kicking a specific habit that way, all at once (like smoking, for ex) - but usually isn’t there a lot of struggling with yourself & trying to resist what you know you SHOULD be doing even though you know it will benefit you??
Ray, why do we do this? Why do I do this to myself? People play mind games with themselves so bad. I know I’m not lazy. I act lazy. Does that mean I AM lazy? Am I just bullshtg myself telling myself that I’m thoughtful & searching for truth & my path when really I’m just lazy and full of sht?? I know I’m not lazy. I’m not. I do act lazy-but lazy people don’t feel guilty about being lazy, right? And lazy people don’t spend as much time as I do trying to figure out what my problem is. I overthink because I’m desperate to move on & progess-but I just feel so lost & stuck. So stuck. Something else is going on. It’s not laziness.

Well im 38 now, i realized i needed a change at 29 years old i was digging myself in a while that i could not get out of but i truely wanted to change i had to suffer 5 years of fighting myself to actually take a step towards recovery. And its not being lazy its being scared to actually take that step the first thing u need to do is stop living inside your brain that comment u made" im i lazy" im i full of shit? We tend to overthink things and scare us to not looking for help or taking that first step. i will never speak to you in the manner you want because you are already beating yourself mentally, i truly beleave that we are alot stronger then we guve ourselfs credit. You just need to surround yourself with positive people and fight the old way of thinking change your everyday habits, habits meaning your surroundings your day to day . I know its easier said then done but it needs to be done . Its all a process and its scary but im here to help with that process and hopefully help you see the othersides of things😁
