    I don't hate this as much as RZ H1, but this film has more grave mistakes throughout. The ridiculously poor CGI, Mara's unenthusiastic performance, the we-went-too-far with the PDF stuff (subtly goes a LONG way), and Mara's unenthusiastic performance highlight my gripes. I HATE we have those issues, because Haley was as good as anyone could have hoped for someone other than Robert donning the glove. This franchise is FAR overdue to be reawakened, and done well. It's DREAMS! You can do ANYTHING! Be creative. The idea that you HAVE to sleep eventually and that you will die once you do from a maniac is dark and scary enough. I hope whenever this franchise is revisted with a new film that they don't play it safe, try to retread the same story AGAIN. Do something new. It shouldnt be THIS hard nor have taken THIS long...

    Unfortunately Rooney Mara plays Nancy in the post-Twilight-film-scape and right at the boom when every main girl character was written as this disinterested, emotionally distracted, manic pixie etc,. Which is none of the characteristics of the Nancy in the og flick iirc. Her actually not wanting to be there irl reflects mostly on the people behind the camera. Why did they make it so unbearable? That’s what I want to know.
    But yeah I watched this movie about a year after it came out so I was 10 which made it a lot more effective. That’s not saying much but since it’s the first in the franchise I’ve seen, to me, it’s not as bad as some of the og fans say.

    I don’t think this movie is as bad as everyone made it out to be. It made a shitload of money in theaters too. I think what makes it “not great” is the awful CGI, the lame main actress sleepwalking (no pun intended) through her acting. Freddy’s makeup was bad too. However, I like that they made Freddy scary and evil again, and Jackie did a GREAT job as Freddy. I’m glad they stopped with the MTV style Freddy in the later sequels where he became a f*cking joke.

    I've never respected Rooney Mara after this. Nobody forced her at gunpoint to sign on the dotted line. She should have stepped aside and gave the opportunity to an actress who respected the material and cared about doing well.
    I don't even get the fuss over Rooney as actress. I was willing to keep an open mind about her when I watched a movie she did with Casey Affleck called "The Ghost." She was every bit as lifeless (pun intended) in that movie.

    I enjoyed watching the Reboot of Nightmare on Elm Street. I loved that I hated Freddy. The cast was a bit blah...or should I say the writing of them was blah. I think haters gonna hate. Many of the classics were good cause they were first. No problem with that. I always assumed Freddy was also a pedo in the originals anyway. Quite often his taunts were sexual. I think the haters killed the chance of a sequel cause they think a Reboot erases the past version. It doesn't. Freddy in the original franchise at first was scary...but just became more and more of a clown as it went on. Nightmare needed a Reboot...and the biggest argument is he was "too evil". Were there some issues? YUP !!! Was it better than the original? YUP !!! imo. I will always give NOES1 its respect for what it was and for being first. But I rather hate the child pedo/killer than cheer on his kills or laugh at his jokes. Thats my opinion.

  • @phousefilms
    @phousefilms 9 днів тому

    My main issues with the movie:
    1)Terrible acting by the mains.
    2)The "twist"was terrible: I really was feeling engaged up to the reveal, as I thought "This is really interesting, a Freddy who isn't a killer and is getting revenge for a witch hunt against him started by the kids?" I was actually enjoying that part and wanting to know more. I was like "Was one of the adults a pervert and the "claws"an exaggeration of the gardening tool Freddy used?" I was waiting for the reveal of who was the one behind it, if it was Nancy's mom or the father of the boyfriend...and then it's just Freddy and the whole time, he was the bad guy. What a goddamn waste....
    3)Weak kills: There's no reason to "ground"Freddy. Dreams are strange places and Freddy is a strange being with powers that can alter the dream. Even if we don't include the "demons"and such of the OG, we can still have some strange or fucked up imagery and have some truly clever kills, which is part of my reason I enjoy the Elm Street franchise. The movie decided "Nah. Let's just make the kills a single stab or cut every time! No reason to be clever. Just be as boring as possible!"

    I feel the writing, specifically the characterizations of all the characters--including Freddy, really tanked this movie. Freddy really felt like he had nothing to do for most of the run time. The special effects did not lend themselves for the tone either. Also, the casting of most of the teenagers felt off as they all look closer to 25 rather than 17.

    Hate…nahh, I think I could only hate something that was made in passion. But my sticking points: 1) even if it is only visible in hindsight, the original was revolutionary…remakes could be revolutionary (the Thing) but only if they take major risks…the movie, for all its attempts to improve it, were approaching it with a “let’s tweak it,”…so it was going to be disappointing from the start, 2) the desire to make a movie “darker”, has gotten under my nerves more and more over time…humor and campiness at times makes many horror movies classics…without some degree of levity, characters feel hallow and not very human (or inhuman in Fred’s case) and thus not ones you will connect with, 3) my personal philosophy with CGI: I like CGI that I can’t tell is CGI…I could be wrong but I don’t think I am alone, 4) I have a working theory on horror/slasher movies…there are three types-1) unicycles (movies build around the slasher…Friday the 13th), 2) bicycles (movies built around a slasher and a specific protagonist…Halloween, Nightmare) and 3) tricycles (movies that build an universe with multiple slashers/protagonists exist…Saw,Chucky)…I think most long-term series fall apart when they lose sight of its foundational design and usually only get back on track when they honor it….it sucks because change is important to keeping a series going and thriving but as you bring up, without a compelling lead to battle with Freddy it won’t be much better than the latter Nightmares. Rant over.

  • @boomstickcritique902
    @boomstickcritique902 12 днів тому +3

    I hate the film because I think it wasted it's potential the concept of a Freddy who molested kids then goes back after them as teens is a good idea dramatically. They don't do anything with it though it was like they wanted to go darker but also wanted this movie to appeal to teens at the same time as a basic mainstream slasher film the 2 tones don't mesh you can't have a film aboit molestation and not even try to use it for dramatic purposes otherwise why even bring it up. This movie should have been about how Freddy had power over the kids because he abused them as children then show how he uses this to have power over them as adults ending the film with Nancy no longer allowing him to control her through her memories of abuse. Have Nancy take control back at the end from Freddy and kill him as she would be no longer afraid of him and he wouldn't be able to feed off there fear anymore or there guilt of being abused. This movie could have and should have been a very powerful film dramatically but they do nothing but constant jump scares with bad cgi.
    The other thing is the mystery of is Freddy guilty or not was pointless as it goes nowhere. Had he actually been innocent and the kids covered for the real molester by lying about him which then got him killed that also could have been interesting dramatically but again it went nowhere.

    • @phousefilms
      @phousefilms 9 днів тому

      That was the main reason I ended up loathing the film. The setup of him potentially being a man who was hunted down and murdered because a bunch of kids lied(with the potential being one of the parents being the real abuser or something)got me invested, but then the reveal of "Yes, but actually, no." just made me shake my head and be bored for the last ten-fifteen minutes of the movie.

I don't care about them at all. The film itself is drab, colorless, and lifeless. The effects are crap. The script is bad. The Freddy makeup is just terrible. There are a few good ideas here and there but not enough to save this movie. Even if you go back and watch the "lesser" Nightmare films, they are at least watchable and entertaining.
