    Ok...all I did was listen. I stopped the video before the reveal. With just my ear, I believe the #1 pups were brighter, and carried more articulation. And while both were carrying mids almost equal the lows on the #2 pups were a bit darker and along with the less discernable articulation, it made them almost muddier.
    Now, on with the video!!

      Same here. The chord strum at the end of the clean demo sounded better to me on guitar 2, but I suppose that could be down to how he strummed. Guitar 2's sound remained clear and even as the sound died out, while guitar 1 had a higher string stand out a bit more, so it wasn't as even.

    Yep. I picked right. To me there was a significant tonal difference. I LOVE SD pickups, but have always HATED the JB. To my ears, a JB sounds like a blanket thrown over the speakers. The cheap pickups DID sound better,but I'd be more concerned about whether or not they squeal or howl under gain and volume. Construction quality accounts for a lot in my opinion. I'd like to see how the cheap ones stand up against a SD Distortion. I know the Distortion is a ceramic magnet, but tone-wise it is closer to the cheaper pickups than the JB is, at least to my tinnitus riddled ear holes.

      I did replace my single coils on a strat and am very happy. My choice wasn't based on tone but output. I bought a loaded Lamsam high output single coil pick guard and am very happy. Higher output gives more dynamic range and harmonic response without stacking so many drives
      Pedals.

    • @victoresarey4036
      @victoresarey4036 6 місяців тому

      @bluwng yes but did you see a drastic change in the tone? Distortion does just that, distorts. I see the less pedals being nice but was it really worth the cost?

    • @bluwng
      @bluwng 6 місяців тому +1

      @@victoresarey4036 yes they are different creatures one Rhino another a Deer. Difference is relative the question is, is the tone what you are looking for? In my case these pickups could handle any genre and had the output and dynamics I wanted. A person that plays ambient and likes low output single coils may hate it.

    Been using Musiclily as replacements for a couple of years now and never been disappointed. I will say though that if you're only playing distortion, as long as you have high output pickups, you aren't going to hear much difference between manufacturers. Any frequency characteristics will show up better with cleans because distortion compresses your signal. That said, considering this a shred channel we're all playing with dirt on anyway!

    IMO I#2 Wea bettern at high notes and clean tones. But not a significant difference at all . The music Lily pickups are a good deal at the price. However I love ceramic pickups... So Donlis Pickups and Feluor pickups. I love Alie-Express and TEMU. Amazon Prime is awesome... I would use Alnico for neck or middle pickups in some guitars & alnico 2 & 5 in other guitars to sound different... Great Review Great Price. . Seymour Duncan is just a inflated brand over pay for what you get . The most important thing is the PLAYER & you play awesome 💯 😎. Next is the Speakers Most people love Greenbacks.. There's another channel on UA-cam that did a shoot out between a $20,000 Guitar and a $2,000 guitar and a $200 guitar a Harley Benton on Heavy Meta Music & The Harley Benton won Peoples choice blind test . Definitely not worth spending almost 3 times as much for a barely noticeable difference and I have bought several different SD pickups over the years , but I've also bought the Musiclilys , Wilkinson and Fleur high output pickups and there's very little difference between those and the SD's , not enough to justify spending 3 times as much on the SD's anymore. Especially during these times , I can't justify spending almost $200 on pickups for some of my guitars that cost between $300-$400. Great video and when I saw Glenn's video when he tested 10 guitars with all different pickups and their was barely a difference , I was convinced that the pickups have very little affect on tone...

    Good video and info Shedder. I done a similar test using Squier Tele ceramic pickups against Fender vintage 65 Jazzmaster pickups on another Tele, one was on the left channel the other on the right. There was hardly any difference at all. The 65s were a little stronger and slight tone difference. I have been buying Artec pickups from dealers and the Guitar Fetish ( also Artec) pickups for a few years. Who would want to blow that much money for the American pickups? All of the materials are the same, no matter who builds them.

    I just ordered a set for $33.42 + tax and they will be here Sunday. The guitar I want to put these into is a Strat partscaster with a Floyd Rose I am building. I just ordered the neck from China and it won't be here for a while, but when the guitar is built Richard, I can e-mail you some sound samples.
    For the record, I stopped and commented this before the reveal and to me it sounded like the SD's were in guitar 1 as it sounded cleaner and brighter. However, the difference is negligible through the Line 6 UX2 system since software plays a big part, I wonder how these would sound through a big ol' Marshall Lead or an EVH 5150....
    Awesome, I'm glad I ordered those then. I just spent a ton of money on SD pickups in a few guitars.....

    Rhythm: Guitar 2 sounded a little bit heavier to me, with a bit more bass covering up the sound of the guitar. They both sound great though, so it comes down to which one you prefer.
    Lead: Same, guitar 2 seems heavier on the bass and maybe even the midrange (not sure exactly what qualifies that lol), but it doesn't seem to get as bright as guitar 1.
    Clean: Guitar 2 actually seems flat here...not in tuning, but like the output of everything across the spectrum is dead equal. Nothing prominent, nothing standing out, just there.
    Overall, I'd take guitar 1. I think it sounds better to me, but for high gain stuff, 2 sounds just fine. Clean, maybe with an EQ it would sound better or maybe raising/lowering the pole pieces. Otherwise...a little flat for my tastes.
    EDIT: I guess I just like cheap, crappy pickups. 🤣🤣

    Very interesting video, I agree with your assessment. I have been using guitarfetish pickups for years after trying Gold Lace Sensor Pickups, Seymour Duncan Pickups and Dimarzios.

    Was right. Prefer the sound of no2 guitar. With overdrive doesn't make much difference but when in clean tone no2 sound way much better.

    Alright, I put on my "fancy" headphones to truly hear the difference. Guitar 2, a little more tone, a little more almost sounded like compression. Very minimal difference. I really thought it was going to be more like a comparison between stock Squire pickups vs. the Seymour Duncans. I was really shocked by the very minimal difference that an EQ can fix (most of us, use effects anyhow). So, yeah I'm going to start looking up some of the off brands and hopefully pick up something good and inexpensive.
    Thanks Dude!

    Very close, but I seemed to here a bit more clarity and separation with Guitar 1, so of course they must be the SD pups...Wrong!
    Hard to believe...😮

    I’m usually not good at guessing which is which. This time I got it right. Is the difference between the two 6x? Definitely not! The pickups did sound similar.

    I think it's the musiclilly for me. They sound brighter to me. I have a cheap ktaxton guitar in my Amazon save for later. I'm gonna need a decent single coil pickup for it too. Thanks man. You are one bad shredding mofo!!!

    Guitar 1 had more clarity and definition, I liked the tone better in every comparison, especially in the "chimier" clean tone. I was very surprised and impressed.

    I'm a big fan of MusicLily and Wilkinson pickups. Love Duncans too. That said, it's difficult to tell whether the difference in sound in this test is from the pickups or the guitars. One bolt neck with a trem, the other hardtail and looks like either a set neck or neck through. Some may argue, but to my ear identical pickups in different guitars will sound different. Different pickups in different guitars will sound even more different. That aside, MusicLily sells good stuff!

    I honestly thought guitar 1 was going to be the Seymour Duncan pickups because I thought they sounded slightly better.... maybe a little more clarity and bite.... seriously. I am shocked, actually.
    Thanks, Richard... you are amazing.

  • @misterscary999

    geez... they both sound very very very very very close to each other. One was a teeny tiny bit more trebly, and perhaps just a hair clearer than the other one - almost microscopic, and negligible in a mix, as you could adjust your amp settings them sound identical. Pickups are the biggest ripoff in my opinion - it's just wire, screws, a couple of magnets and a plastic bobbin. It's not uncommon to see $300, $400 and even $500 pickups these days. Guitar gear shaming seems to be something that's real - I always see posts on social media where a guy is bragging about his pricey exotic amp, expensive pedals, or expensive guitar parts. Do these guys think it'll actually make them a better player by buying all this overpriced stuff? Invoking the spirit of EVH and doing things DIY are way cooler in my book. Didn't he wind his own custom pickups back in the day? LOL! Thank you for helping bust the myth that good usable pickups that sound great have to cost an arm and a leg. You Rock!

    Very close. Guitar 1 sounded more...artictulate? Guitar 2 was slightly muddy with high gain. Super, super close. Variance in pick up heght?
    Not enough of a difference to justify an extra $170. Might try out these musiclily pickups.

    Great video! The Duncans were darker and less articulate - I thought those were the cheap ones, thinking they didn't sound as good. Realistically, both sets could probably be made to sound the same with just a slight change in the amp EQ. I own 3 Wolf AIO guitars (IYV brand which are ordered to higher spec by AIO and set up by them) and replaced the pickups in a tele style with Brad Paisley's pickups (not cheap), and replaced the one in their super strat with a Dimebucker. Honestly, after the expense and the time spent, I kind of regretted it. I have a few other budget guitars with a couple Duncans on deck to go in them, but I doubt I'll bother now. I should have listened to my ears to begin with and not upgraded just because of the name brand. Lesson learned!

    great video man. with that said i dont think the comparison can be done fairly/truly? with different style guitars made of different woods. i have 2 jackson dinkys. one with a maple neck and one with a rosewood or whatever it is but the rosewood is definitely bassyer then the ohter and the maple is way brighter. i did this test with emg 81s only tho.
    my guess for pickups is.. #1= jb #2= cheap one but i dont know why? i was wrong tho lol.

    I liked the Duncans very slightly better on leads and clean. I thought the Musiclily were better on rhythm, with the exception of the harmonics, which seemed to me to ring a little better on the Duncans. They were ridiculously close, though. I'd definitely save the $160.

    Why is it Glenn Fricker is the only one who can do an honest comparison like this. Each sample is heavily processed, either with excessive gain or reverb and delay. Make an honest comparison, no reverb, no delay, not a plugin, just out of am amp strumming chords.

    • @brianstallard5446
      @brianstallard5446 6 місяців тому +2

      Just like Glenn's channel, this one is about metal. That means excessive amounts of gain, reverb, delay, chorus, etc. If thats not your thing, then go watch some fart sniffer channel.
