No need to take away your underwear. Have always refused that as that is my private areas. Just because you are patient, do not mean you do not have privacy that should be respected. Private areas is for Husband only. No strange men to see.

Depending on where procedure is performed we should be able to wear a depend brief and clean sport bra for women and a depend for men. This can help alleviate some of our apprehension. No one wants to go in and be stripped naked in front of others. We need to be able to get consent forms ahead of time, read them, ask for same gender teams if so desired and put our now on them. Such as no removal of underwear if procedure not on genital areas, no catheter as most surgeries are short enough in duration that a catheter is really for the techs, no students, no sales reps, no person's videoing and tell them to leave their cell phones in their lockers not in surgery. Otherwise we should be able to take our cell phone, deny amnesia drugs and have local only.

I suggest you never have surgery. The surgical team dictates how you should be dressed or undressed. It’s their job not yours. Your not a surgeon. I had mitral valve repair. I read all about it and watch all youtube vids on the surgery. In the pre-op room a female aid removed my gown and shaved my chest, groin and legs. That’s how it’s done. I was not embarrassed because the surgery was going to save my life. Even though I was anesthetized I knew my gown would be removed in the OR and my body would be scrubbed and dried then they would apply an antiseptic to my entire body. Both necessary to stop infection. While that was happening a urinary catheter was inserted.
A female nurse removed the catheter in The ICU. . Two female nurses washed me in bed after removing my gown. I was naked for 10 minutes. In the ICU and step down unit the female nurses would frequently check the incision in my groin for infection. My genitals were in full view.
I was never embarrassed. It’s their job. I was fully recovered in three weeks. Check your modesty at the hospital entrance. If they had to make concessions for all patients they would never be able to operate efficiently.
When in Rome do ad the Romans do. If you can’t then see s shrink and get over your fears. If you can’t they’ll just cancel the surgery and you put your life at risk over some idiotic phobia.

No two people are alike. One should not dictate that all people accept things like they want. My spouse and I have both been humiliated and embarrassed by opposite gender staff. We all have rights and 1 right is to say no opposite gender being in when exposed. Just our views also. Glad you don't mind. Some of us do and some don't. We have many friends who feel as we and 2 of us have worked in hospital settings. We know know the talk etc from personnel other than the doctors. But you nor hospitals should dictate how we feel. So happy you are well and continued good health.

FL DP- your analysis of the Foley just shows you don't know what you're talking about. For some surgeries and after, strict I&O (intake and output) can be detrimental in maintaining stability. We don't insert them for the hell of it.

@@dancingbear6239 I never intend to go through the humiliation and loss of my own dignity again. My children know my wishes. So does my spouse. Nurses, techs and cnas who post on here have made it worse than ever for us.

Some surgeries cannot be performed on local anesthesia due to pain, length of surgery, and/or the requirement that the patient remain still in an uncomfortable position.
