  • This video presents a mysterious and unusual late regency daybed while shedding light on the subject of furniture from the past and this early 19th century style as a whole.
Regency is a term given to the decorative movement which emerged during the 1790s in England and evolved, sweeping the European continent and lingering up until about the year 1840. The name comes from the political Regency of Prince George, later George IV who ruled in place of George III when this monarch was too ill to rule. Furniture styles only loosely correspond to the governmental period or monarch’s reign after which they are named.
The regency style, being so successful and diversely expressed, leaves for us today a wide range of artifacts from different countries and decades of the first third of the 19th century. This daybed is likely Italian, and it exemplifies the later, more exuberant phase of the style which is prized for the use of red mahogany, robust neoclassical decor, and the way it evokes a dark and mysterious past.
