@Oxnard Darcy Please explain how that justifies charging for something that was previously free for two out of three consoles. I got a headache just remembering how pain-staking it was when I first transfered my gen 4 Pokémon all the way up to to Bank all the way back in 2014. Really, I checked my old DS saves and I realized I didn't move all of them precisely because of how obnoxious the whole process is.

I appreciate that they let us do this and the flavor text of the Pokémon traveling through time and space to be with us is cool but I’d rather just catch the Pokémon I want in the newer games and give it the same nickname I gave it in the original game. For example, I had a Bulbasaur named Coldsaur in Fire Red but Professor Sexymore just straight up gives you a Kanto starter in XY so I just chose Bulbasaur and also named it Coldsaur then headcannoned it being the same Bulbasaur I had in Fire Red lol. Having your own headcannons in Pokémon is always fun, plus this way is just more convenient for me. The only problem is the new one might not share the same things like gender, nature, IV’s, capture location, flavor text, etc. And it’s harder if it’s rarer or a shiny, but depending on how you play the game, most of those things can be pretty negligible and they’re usually just things you check out once then never look at again. I did hear that you can change IV’s and natures in swsh though so at least those 2 things can be fixed. I can usually just get all the Pokémon I want in the newer games, and if not, I’ll just wait for a distribution event or trade it or cheat it in or something or I can just distract myself with the new ones lol. The only reason I would transfer a Pokémon form an old game is for the sentimental value/attachment/nostalgia/bragging rights/experience/collection/novelty of it. That being said, I love that we can do this! It really makes the games feel much more connected and sort of harmonic??? in a way. I don’t know of any video game franchises that are as intertwined and interconnected as this one. Heck, I might just transfer my old black 2 team to Pokémon Home. The idea of showing off my Pokémon to my friends on my phone is pretty appealing to me. Awesome video as always btw
Raphnet also sells his N64 to PC USB controller converter. It's main purpose is to connect your N64 controller to a PC, but with his drivers and tools, you can read anything from the controller's expansion pak directly to the computer, including the N64 Transfer Pak. So, if you already have the N64 Transfer Pak (came with Pokemon Stadium) and a controller with your First Generation game, you can use this adapter to dump your save file to your PC. AND you have an N64 controller for your computer! :)

I did the whole process. In fact, this is how I first learned about Johnstone's UA-cam page. His original "how easy is it to transfer" videos were very helpful in getting my entire collection to Gen 7. While I had a lot of the games already, I will admit I spent probably a good 400-500 bucks to get all the games I wanted. And I spent a year (alongside a full time job) getting every single Pokemon. I played through Red/Gold/Emerald/LeafGreen/Platinum/HeartGold/Black/White2/X/OmegaRuby/Sun/UltraMoon/Let'sGoPikachu to get all 807 Pokemon and some PKGO to get Meltan/Melmetal. Seriously. It took me a year. Biggest frustrations were definitely trying to catch all the 1% encounters in Gen 2, all the unskippable cutscenes in Gen 7 and the sheer number of Pokemon in Gen 5.
I subscribed because you earned that one guy, I have done all of this transferring I am a seasoned pokemon vet and it's not a easy process but you are right this is exactly how the "legal" way is to do all the transferring up from the older versions withought cheating or trading from foreign countries to get legendaries that aren't available to US
Yeah that video discouraged me quite hard... For quite some time I wanted to do "generational living dexes", so one with the Gen 3, one with the Gen 4 and so on. I do have almost everything needed but transferring them up is going to kill me. Oh and Im gonna catch EVERYTHING with regular Pokéballs and deliberately wont use Colosseum for the Johto starters as the icing on this fucked up cake
Just a regular living dex (without trading online) is much more of a challenge than it looks. You end up realizing there are random Pokemon you never cared about (Nosepass in my case) that the only way you can access is through swarms or the Johto Safari Zone or some other convoluted obscure method. So you go to the ends of the earth and back for a rock with a big nose that you never wanted in the first place.
@@StarkMaximum Its not necessarily hard just... tedious. Only using the main games and regular Pokéballs is on me, but the stupid catching games for transfering up in Gen 4&5 are gonna be a pain in the ass.
I did all this last year while Ribbon Mastering a Farfetch'd (actually inspired in part by your Forretress video, lol) and seeing the whole process laid out again makes me kind of worried for the future: For all the previous generations, the transfer methods are future-proofed; even though it was 2019, I could still connect my GBA to my Gamecube, or send Pokemon from one DS to the other, or whatever. As long as hardware like batteries or anything don't fail on me, I could go do it all over again right now, and do it anytime I want for years down the road. But in gen 6 with Pokemon Bank, even though I will admit it's extremely convenient, it's also a service that could end sometime in the future, similar to the Wii Shop's closure making Pokemon Ranch unavailable. We don't really know how long the service will exist, and it's quite likely they simply won't provide any other method once it does. I dunno, something about that makes me feel sad. I have to wonder if maybe they could have made Bank a downloadable program with a one-time purchase fee or something instead.
You can get another manaphy in ranger, you have to wipe the save and replay the entire game though. It is entirely possible to get multiple manaphy's from one game.
I actually did this up to bank. Long process but I had fun doing it. Pal Park and the Gen V transfer options being end game only were the only annoying parts. Well, that and only being able to transfer a few at once. I think I'm done though.
AFAIK, you can indeed transfer data from the GBC and GBA using the GBC link cable as you can boot GB/C games into the GBA and trade or battle without issues. The reason you cannot transfer Pokémon from Gen 1-2 to Gen 3 games is the size and structure of the Pokémon "files". Best regards!
You cant transfer them because Special Atk and Def were combined as the Special stat in Gen 1&2. IVs worked differently as well and abilities didnt exist. It was just too much at the time to deal with thats why its not possible
@@blackcorona07 No, it's because they used the new Personality Value system in RSS instead of using only the IVs to dertermine certain things. PV weren't around in Gen 1&2. The Sepcial-Stat was splitted in Gen 2 already.
I clicked on this randomly and realized I actually have had a copy of Pokemon Box sitting on my shelf for years. I had no idea it was worth $300. Thanks for the heads up!
I only have ruby, sapphire, emerald, fire red, diamond, pearl, platinum, heart gold, and soul silver. But this video has sold me on the idea of buying a switch to play through the new games and collect my old pokemon on the newest games. Thanks.
Since Pokemon HOME GO support was added, you can basically get every old pokemon into the new games if you wait enough. Tho I wouldn't want to transfer my cool legendaries to the games that will be deprecated in 10 years.
The alternative version of going from gen 1/2 hard cartridges to gen 8/home is to have ez carts for gba and gbc, with sds and load emulators in. Use a Mega Memory cartridge to back up your real game, load that save on the emulator card, pull that sd, load the mons sorted in am editor on pc and ensure they have reasonable g3+ stats/abilities/ivs, important them to a g3 emulator's save, put that on an sd and to a gba cartridge and either then trade to real g3 copied or just send them to gen 4 directly the normal way
Very good explanation. Lucky for me, I did this as the years went by so now I just have to move from Bank to Home. So many Pokemon can't be transferred into Sword and Shield though, that's disappointing but at least they will all be in one place.
I should mention that some of what he said about Pokémon HOME was incorrect: The service does NOT have a free trial, and instead has a free “basic” plan that has the same features as he said. Also, there is no restriction on what systems can use HOME.
Ya should have noted that not EVERY Pokemon is capable of being transferred to Sword and Shield, as it does not have the entire national dex. This explanation was much easier to understand than your earlier Part 2 transfer video though!
I have pokemon in my Home that I raised back in GBA Ruby. I even have rare Pokemon, like the TRU Arceus and wishmaker Jirachi, that have been traded up over many years. I just kept up with it from game to game, never thinking how hard it would be to do it now. Seeing how much it costs now, I am glad I did not choose to do it all at once.
Over the past few months I've actually been working toward a challenge where I catch every Hoenn Pokemon in RSE, Sinnoh Pokemon in DPPt, etc, making a complete living dex as I go up through the generations (starting at Gen 3.) Originally I was going to get the Kanto Pokemon in FRLG and the Johto Pokemon in HGSS but now I'm unsure if I want to go with the virtual console originals or not. I dug out some of my brother's older hardware like his GBA Gameshark and DS action replay, so I'm able to unlock the special events and catch "legitimate" event pokemon. It's been a ton of fun so far honestly. But I tell you what, I am absolutely dreading the transfer from Gens 4 to 5. I have to at least transfer 242 Pokemon and I already don't like that mini-game to begin with. Pray for me.
I’m doing something similar except there’s 2 specific Pokémon shiny mewtwo and charizard from fire red are gonna beat all the elite 4’s in each region so I can get all the ribbons. But I’m also completing the region dex’s too and transferring
Great video. You covered the process of transferring Pokemon from Gen 3 all the way to Pokemon Home accurately, however you actually can't transfer all Pokemon to Sword and Shield from Home as there is no National Dex available in those games. You can only transfer those listed in the Galar dex. Apologies if someone already mentioned this.
I got a shedinja from Ruby in Sheild. Didn’t know much about shinies back then. The Pokemon was shiny. It means I must have a shiny Ninjask floating around somewhere in my old games.
As convoluted and tedious as the process is, I think it gets taken for granted that it's even possible at all. I mean, we have to jump through a lot of hoops to transfer Pokémon all the way up through generations, but so did the developers in order to allow the functionality in the first place. I'm not sure if they could've made it any simpler in the end, considering Pokémon is often the only instance of two different consoles/services having to communicate with each other.
@riley Somewhat fair, but when one of the alternatives is to simply not allow transferring at all, I'd say it's better than nothing. As I said, I think it's kinda just taken for granted at this point that transferring Pokemon across generations is possible, when even 25+ years later it's still a pretty novel concept. I personally won't fault them for trying to make it a bit more 'interesting' at times if the core functionality of transferring is ultimately still present.

@Oxnard Darcy i bought online just for sword and shield woops
@Oxnard Darcy
You do realise other companies doing it doesn't make it less stupid?
@Oxnard Darcy
Please explain how that justifies charging for something that was previously free for two out of three consoles. Especially in Nintendos case where the online never got better, the cloud saves aren't allowed for games that really need them and the only other benefit is (S) NES games, most of which people don't care for.
And also the fact I'm already paying for my Internet, and then I have to pay again is a pretty good argument against NSO

I’m pretty sure Platinum only lets you do it once per 24 hours as well
JayFry: It does. I know because I’m in the process of doing it right now. I have all Gen 4 games and it’s only HGSS that let you do unlimited a day. There’s a glitch what allows unlimited with DPP too which I’m using, but requires 2 Gen 3 carts.
Jesse McFarland-Ward I believe the misunderstanding is from a GameFAQs forum post that says you can use Platinum that’s a top hit in Google Results. In that threat someone corrects the OP but people usually only read the top post.
14:39 omg so many memories as a kid (like 11 or 12 years old) I was doing stuff on that website on my computer and then pokemon appeared on my game: Munna, dreams, berries, minigames, a customizable house (I think) . So much love and so many feels. I miss those times 😢💕
I got a headache just remembering how pain-staking it was when I first transfered my gen 4 Pokémon all the way up to to Bank all the way back in 2014. Really, I checked my old DS saves and I realized I didn't move all of them precisely because of how obnoxious the whole process is.
Glad you included the 199k subs screenshot in the video, you are now at 200k! Congrats John! :D

Platinum did not lift the Pal Park once-per-day restriction. That didn't happen until HGSS.
Zeturic but there was a glitch that did
I appreciate that they let us do this and the flavor text of the Pokémon traveling through time and space to be with us is cool but I’d rather just catch the Pokémon I want in the newer games and give it the same nickname I gave it in the original game.

Im so glad I have all my old consoles and my old games , and get to do this all for free now 🙌🏻
I did the whole process.
You: I want to do a challenge!
Also you: Ugh this challenge is so hard why don't they make it easier.
@@StarkMaximum Its not necessarily hard just... tedious.
Only using the main games and regular Pokéballs is on me, but the stupid catching games for transfering up in Gen 4&5 are gonna be a pain in the ass.
You can get the Johto starters using Island Scan in Gen 7 IIRC
You won't be able to do it legitly for Gen 3. How will you get a legitimate Deoxys/Jirachi/Mew without hacking the game in Gen 3?
That's an error, Platinum still has that 24 hour restriction

@@Tri6OraxusI think they mean without the eshop/without bank pre-downloaded. I'm running into that issue myself
@@robespierre2837 I imagine you can, and homebrew was my plan, but last I checked nobody has uploaded the files 😭
I did all this last year while Ribbon Mastering a Farfetch'd (actually inspired in part by your Forretress video, lol) and seeing the whole process laid out again makes me kind of worried for the future:
For all the previous generations, the transfer methods are future-proofed; even though it was 2019, I could still connect my GBA to my Gamecube, or send Pokemon from one DS to the other, or whatever.
Prophetic
Welcome to 2023
literallu just did this with my shiny living dex from 3 years ago lol
The fact you can get your team from the GBA to the Switch now. Your Pokémon from Gen 1 can shake off the dust and get back into shape
You can get another manaphy in ranger, you have to wipe the save and replay the entire game though. It is entirely possible to get multiple manaphy's from one game.
I don’t have nearly enough gens to do that.
I actually did this up to bank. Long process but I had fun doing it. Pal Park and the Gen V transfer options being end game only were the only annoying parts. Well, that and only being able to transfer a few at once. I think I'm done though.
John: okay your gonna need a GBA to play these games
Me: But cant I just buy the original ds and play them on there

wild to see just how much the prices have raised in the last 3 years
AFAIK, you can indeed transfer data from the GBC and GBA using the GBC link cable as you can boot GB/C games into the GBA and trade or battle without issues.

Ya should have noted that not EVERY Pokemon is capable of being transferred to Sword and Shield, as it does not have the entire national dex. This explanation was much easier to understand than your earlier Part 2 transfer video though!
A lot of money.
Okay mark my words I will come back to this video in 6 years now
Great video. You covered the process of transferring Pokemon from Gen 3 all the way to Pokemon Home accurately, however you actually can't transfer all Pokemon to Sword and Shield from Home as there is no National Dex available in those games. You can only transfer those listed in the Galar dex. Apologies if someone already mentioned this.
keep doing what you do! Dont stop making videos on this!
Good lord what 2020 did to the prices of these games and consoles.
I got a shedinja from Ruby in Sheild. Didn’t know much about shinies back then. The Pokemon was shiny. It means I must have a shiny Ninjask floating around somewhere in my old games.
The metallic rose DS I believe is the chrome one, it had a chrome top and only 2000 were made. If not the dude is on some goofy town.
Congrats on 200k subs I remember when you had 80k subs you defiantly deserve this because of your hard work.
Me, having to buy Pokémon X to use Pokémon Bank to download Poké Transporter to transfer Gen 1 and 2 Pokémon:
OK, Nintendo. Sure.
Congrats on 200k subs!
Fun fact, Nintendo actually did make multiple trade kiosks for swapping diffrent games and even orginal gift pokemon events and pokemon snap events
If anyone's having trouble understanding, here's how I did it.
