  • This is one of the world’s most special watches. An 18ct gold IWC Da Vinci dating to around 1995. The Da Vinci super complicated was introduced in 1985 and is still a current model. Not identical to this of course, as models always evolve, but the equivalent new IWC Da Vinci costs around £40,000. I’ve owned this watch for three years and I’ve thoroughly enjoyed it. Not just wearing, but simply handling and looking at it.
The watch is going into auction with a £5000 to £7000 estimate
For more information on the sale, see www.elstob.co.uk

Stunning David, I’m drooling over this watch. Love the art straps too!

That Da Vinci is one reason a lot of us tell time with our phones. We haven't the spare cash for old cars either. The estimate sounds low, but it's not a brand to attract Status Symbol buyers.

Well, I often use paper plates when I dine and like your phone, eventually, those plates get thrown away. That watch will never be thrown away.

True…if it were Rolex, then a lot more people would understand it. It’s one for those that know!

Same Scatchard that I bought a vintage Heuer from and that also promised me two leather watch sports straps. The Heuer had supposedly been serviced but no paperwork to prove that, which i repeatedly requested. And when the chronograph wouldn't reset when used, I asked for a refund rather it going back to their watch repairer. They refunded me a £1000 short of what I'd paid stating that they'd spent that on a service on my Rolex Bi metal datejust (Boxed & Rolex service card) which was Unworn from its last Service at Rolex.
After several phone calls and text messages I've received no refund of the £1000 difference and I'm still waiting for the leather sports straps.

Thank you and yes you’re right…you can kill an object by over estimating!

Low estimates are a joke. Buyers aren't gormless children. Pretty much everyone has access to the internet to assess the current market value of the watch.

@@DavidHarperAntiques Sensible estimates are ok , but I am anti reserves. They may have had a place in the dark days of the ring , and dodgy cataloging , but the internet has changed all of that. It is an auction and it is all on the day as you know.

If this doesn't fly, I'm sure the auctioneer may be tempted. But it's not that rare and the service history is not the best. The problem is, especially after the pandemic, and the cost of living crisis, is that a lot of these old watchmakers retired and shut down. So now, there are less really skilled. top of their game watchmakers who you can really trust to do a good job for a reasonable cost.

Good point, we’re losing skilled people far too quickly…however, I know a few younger guys who are absolutely brilliant…so, we’re ok for now!
