    Great review and comparison. The truth is that a brand like Tissot is true value for money. They may be placed in the middle of the Swatch Group regarding prices, but the quality of many of their watches is very good. Being a huge watch company Swatch Group can source quality parts and movements which Tissot are great at utilizing to produce very good watches at very fair prices.

    my first watch was a Tissot powermatic 80 COSC from the first year of its release , 2013. With silver dial, and an interesting design on the case side. Beautiful watches for the price.
    If you want the magnetic resistant Tissot with the silicon balance wheel look for the 80.811 movement, the 80.111.

    My dear Josh, great review, but you forgot the most important of this watch...the movement ! This watch has a ETA 2824-2 movement with 80 hours power reserve with a silicium spiral spring. This great power reserve is reached due the low beats of 21800, the silicium spiral spring and a low friction mechanic construction. I recoment also to check the Certina ph200M, the famous 1967 dive watch revival, also with the powermatic 80 movement. Greetings from Switzerland

      DanielChias67 Chias not correct. This watch has caliber 80.111 which has plastic escapement wheel, and plastic pallet fork, also metal hairspring, and metal mainspring. Silicium spring is on a different version of powermatic 80, and has metal escapement wheel, and metal pallet fork. These movements have 25 jewels, not the 23 jewels in this watch.

    I have a 2022 version of this watch, and am happy to see they have gone back to the engraved bezel, which makes the numbers and gradations much more visible under different lighting conditions. The sunburst blue to dark-blue face is also an attractive feature of the new model. The case is a bit thick and the bezel a bit sharp around the edges for a daily wearer for me (just a personal preference), but it is my go-to watch for all watersports. In my opinion an automatic with a screw down crown is the way to go in a diver , as opposed to a quartz-movement diver,. MY concern is that the waterproofing in the quartz watch, even with a screw-down back, can get compromised when the case is opened to change the battery.

    My fervent wish is that Tissot offers the 'blue into black' dialed watch on a bracelet. The rubber strap was a 'no-go' for me, and I didn't want to buy a new watch and wait around for a bracelet to come in the mail. The 21mm lug width is kind of limiting for aftermarket band choices, but I understand that a 2mm can be 'taken in a bit'. I just didn't want the hassle right out of the gate on a new watch.

    Fantastic review. Lots of people have expressed doubts about the exhibition caseback and the 300m water resistance. The bracelet and clasp could be better. Bezel turning feels a little hollow. I like the the exhibition case back, the ceramic bezel and the engineer style bracelet. I'm leaning towards the Certina though, seems like a more robust design.

    G'day Josh,
    Well done on the Video review! I too own the previous release of the Seastar1000 Powermatic 80 and love it as a daily. It was bought knowing the version had stopped production and as such picked it up on a run out sale here in Aus. for less than $400USD on the rubber strap (of which is Very comfortable). I then contacted my national AD for the Swatch group and ordered the 5 Link 19mm (argrrrrg) Steel Bracelet for less than $100USD. The presence of the watch changes dramatically with the bracelet and is by far the most commented watch I wear, be it at work or on holidays.
    The rubber strap and steel bracelet are continually swapped, and have used it for diving and snorkelling on the Great barrier Reef, preferring it to my Sinn U2 when snorkelling TBH. It's a pity the new revision has lost its playful dial and hands and looks like the Tissot PRC200 with a diver bezel, but thankfully the profile still maintains that lovely polished channel on the side case.
    All in all they are a brilliant daily watch no matter which model you chose, be it old or new and I would definitely advise someone on a budget for a mechanical watch to look at the Seastar1000 range (particularly discontinued models as New Old Stock).
    Subbed and best regards.

Walking by some shop windows I show the full blue version of this watch and instantly fell in love with it. I think you’re right that the black does match all outfits but the blue is an absolute statement piece and would be fantastic for day to day wear for a pop of color. There’s also the gradient blue/black and you could totally order a metal bracelet to fit to it for the best of both worlds! Cheers!

    Wonderful review of a very good watch. Unfortunately, brands like Tissot, Hamilton and Certina often get overlooked by watch aficionados as a mass-produced goods from the conglomerate (Swatch Group), but all of these brands actually produce high-quality timepieces and in this case - a very interesting one. I tried this particular model recently and in my book - 300 meters of water resistance plus new movement (well, upgraded ETA 2824-2) for under 1000$ (let alone 700$ price range of this one) presents simply fantastic value for money, and the build quality is quite impressive, on pair with much more expensive timepieces. So, thumbs up for Tissot and for the review!

    I got one on eBay for $492, the blue on blue. I have a Tissot Seastar 1000 from about 10 years ago with the diver on the winding rotor (that can only be seen in one position). I love that watch, had it modded because the old hands were tough to read and the lume was atrocious ( now ploprof w/orange minute). This watch is gorgeous! I would love to see one with a 'batman' or an orange bezel (like a budget version of it's cousin, the Omega Planet Ocean). Orange and gray dial, or orange and root beer dial would work too.

    Nice overview of both models. I was recently shopping both the Seastars you own. I prefer the new one but I don’t like the increase in size (43mm vs 42mm). I also agree that the dial markers on the new model needed to be larger and the ceramic bezel looks cheap compared to the old one. I’m wondering if the markings on the new ceramic bezel will wear away over time? I do like that they got rid of the helium escape valve as it’s only used by saturation divers in a bell and adds only an extra expense and another failure point for water intrusion. I haven’t handled the new one in store but I was never a fan of the dial and handset on the old model. It looks to cartoonish. This new version with the old bezel, 40-41mm size and larger dial markers could have been a home run in my opinion. Maybe Tissot will get it right with the next generation? Unfortunately the bracelet on these models is very poor with a cheap stamped clasp and divers extension. It’s the same kind of clasp Seiko uses on their divers which cost half as much. The Swatch group’s Certina DS Action Diver and Hamilton Khaki Scuba Get much better machined clasps with ratcheting Diver extensions. The Certina also has the actual ISO6425 diving watch certification though only has an aluminum bezel like the Hamilton.

    • @joshjamesyoutube
      @joshjamesyoutube  6 років тому +3

      dustinr16 Hi! Okay let me go through this item by item - YES, there is a millimeter in difference between old and new, but I don’t find that they wear all that differently because the old one always felt huge anyway. This one wears slightly larger on a bracelet but once you take it off, it doesn’t feel huge at all. As for the bezel, the indices on the new one aren’t applied so they won’t wear off with use. I tend to agree with the bracelet comment, but comparing this to a Seiko just because of the clasp isn’t fair. This bracelet is a much more refined and finished product than most Seiko Prospex bracelets - I find that the finish is similar to what I have on my higher end Seiko Presage Watches from Japan. Again, I paid $550 for this watch and I think for that amount of money the clasp can be overlooked. I’ve got this on a nato strap anyhow, the only diver I keep on a bracelet is my Seamaster. And finally, as for certifications, I get it, it’s cool. But for most people looking at this watch it’s just marketing clout. Serious divers are probably looking at some far more serious watches. I think that this is just a really great starter diver for someone looking to get into Swiss watches.

    • @dustinr16
      @dustinr16 6 років тому +1

      I just find it strange that the Certina, Hamilton and Mido divers get a better machined clasp with ratcheting divers extension. I have a $250 Citizen Promaster diver with a Machined clasp. Clearly not acceptable for even $550. Are the markings printed on the ceramic bezels? I’ve heard that the Seamster’s Ceramic bezel markings can be scratched off the ceramic bezel. Only the liquid metal ones on the Planet Ocean are truly scratch proof.

      I understand what you’re saying but I personally think at this price point the stamped clasp is acceptable because of everything else you get in the watch. And if you don’t that’s fine - then the watch isn’t for you, you know? As for the Seamaster bezel “scratching off” I’m not an expert but on mine from early 2018 (pre-Bazelworld model) the numbers are laser-etched into the ceramic so you’d have to completely take off the surface of the bezel to erase them.

    Hi Josh thanks for a nice review, it’s the best review for this watch I’ve seen so far. How do you think, how this watch compares to Longines HydroConquest 2018, except the price? Is it worth to pay more for Longines?

    • @joshjamesyoutube

      Misha Bohoslavskyi Hi! Thanks for watching and for the comment! If you can swing it I think I would spend the extra money and get the Longines. This one is still a little “rough around the edges” for my personal tastes where the Longines really does feel like a mature, refined timepiece and I think you do get what you pay for with the Longines which is to say that you get twice the watch for twice the cost. Hope this helps!

      steve LUFC64 I cant say I’ve seen that issue with the bezel but the case itself on this watch failed for me (see my 8-month follow up: ua-cam.com/video/relnXUpwjFc/v-deo.html) which was really disappointing. I have to say that I have had a number of quality-control issues with Tissot/P80 products over the last few years, and whilst I still love Tissot a lot I’ve got the pieces I want and probably won’t be buying much more from them unless a really standout model comes along.

  • @Zeus-kj7nn

    Tissot have deliberately gone for a premium diver classier look over the mk1 Seastar. That's why it has the new shiny bezel insert and applied indices. They have definitely improved it but it's let down by the pressed clasp opposed to a milled at this price point. I've just bought one and replaced bracelet with a better one.

    Is it true that all the Powermatic 80 models can not be regulated like the older models? I also heard that they use plastic parts in the movement and the movement is a lower beat to achieve the 80 hour power reserve.

    • @joshjamesyoutube
      @joshjamesyoutube  6 років тому

      Rhonda M Hi. That is for the most part true, although I believe that they are getting better about using less plastic in the movement. The Powermatic 80 can also only be “serviced” or repaired by Swatch versus a stock 2824 which can be serviced by a reputable jeweler. And yes, they reduce the beat rate to double the standard power reserve. So there are definite downsides, but given that this is a budget watch, I personally think it’s acceptable.

    Hi there, first of I have to say thank you for the review, I have been doing extensive research on this watch trying to make up my mind and your video has me almost there, I’ve got a few questions.
    I don’t wear bracelet watches cos I feel my wrists are too slim for one so in your opinion is this watch not too chunky/heavy for slim wrists people?
    2ndly- this will be my first automatic watch, good choice?
    Overall I really do like the watch I’m just concerned about the bracelet

    • @joshjamesyoutube
      @joshjamesyoutube  5 років тому +1

      Blackjinni1 Hi! You are most welcome for the review I’m glad you found it helpful.
      To answer your questions, this watch is big but I ditched the bracelet and rock it on a nato strap 99% of the time. The bracelet is kind of cheap feeling anyway. I personally think a nato looks good in every situation and gives you a lot of practical function but also style. It looks good on a nato with everything from casual clothes to a suit and tie. So that’s how I would go if I were you.
      Secondly, it’s a Tissot so it’s definitely built to last and is a high quality piece. If you’re worried about the long term though, definitely buy from an authorized dealer in your home country so if you ever have issues you can take it back and they are much more likely to help you than if you buy it somewhere online from a grey market dealer.

      Kabir Anand Hi! I like the new (2018 release) Hydroconquest but I personally am not a fan of the older model (2017 and older) because of the busy dial and aluminum bezel. If it were me making the purchase I’d hold off and pay a couple hundred more to get the 2018 with the ceramic bezel and nicer face, though if you like the older model, go for it!

    Hey, I am new to watches and I was considering buying this specific Tissot Seastar. I notice it only has a day indicator. Do you have to manually configure it every month since not every month has the same amount of days in a month? Thanks.

    • @joshjamesyoutube
      @joshjamesyoutube  6 років тому +1

      Christopher Chan Hi! Yes, and not to correct you or anything, but this one has what you’d call the “date” (“day” is how you reference a window or dial which shows you the respective day of the week). So on March 1, for example, you’d have to rotate past 29, 30, and 31. This is typical of any analog (not digital) watch.
      There’s a common misconception out there about “Perpetual Calendars” when it comes to automatic watches as it’s nearly impossible to program that data into an analog watch that doesn’t have a super complex tourbillion movement, because you’d have to program the watch to know the current month, day, and year and program it to rotate the date 1, 2, or 3 times at the end of each month. Since automatics are hand wound, if the watch stops moving, there’s no power and therefore there can’t be any kind of databank storing that information.
      Now, if that’s a concern, there are a number of radio sync/atomic watches (where they receive time and date updates from a satellite) from Casio, Seiko, and Citizen; but they tend to be on the lower end in price and finish and are all quartz and solar.

      William Rampersad Hi Will. Thanks for watching and glad you enjoyed the video. Like I said in the video, however, I’m not a watch expert and frankly I don’t wear this watch much so I haven’t kept it running for a month straight. However it’s a standard Powermatic 80, and for the most part they’re known to run around +/- 30 seconds per month. I assume since you’re asking that you know about how automatic movements work in that it all depends how well the movement was regulated. In general it should be good enough for most people, but I definitely would not expect it to run with chronometer accuracy. This is after all only a $700 watch.

But there are other divers from companies like Certina and Mido, but it's more a decision based on your personal style.
