I used vinegar and steel wool in the past. Always washed the steel wool in dish washing soap first to get the manufacturers oil out. The additional info. about the h-peroxide was a help. Thank you. This was a well made, clear info. video.
Made a game rack for someone who wanted it to look old, cleaned it with dilute hydrocloric acid and left it in long wet grass for 6 weeks, client was over the moon with it, the only way you could tell it wasnt 150 yo was my rivets were too neat.
if you want some good deep looking rust, instead of using the wimpy 3% store bought hydrogen peroxide, go to your local beauty supply and get the professional 10-20% hydrogen peroxide, it comes in both liquid and cream, I like the cream because it's thicker which makes it easier to design with. i created some metal art roses as gifts one year and rusted the pedals and leaves on some of them with the cream after i kicked up the vinegar by mixing in a little muriatic acid I thought they looked awesome and the best I had ever done, then i saw some of them a year later sitting on peoples shelves and they were 10 times more beautiful then they were originally......
The initial rust is very superficial and delicate. When you spray with clear coat don't hold the can too close or the rust will flake off leaving bare shiny metal.
I've seen another option where the vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and salt are mixed together, but I'm trying your method because I like the pooling effect better.
Wow. I have a pocket watch I tried aging. I coaked it in Bleach. This was quick. I think I will try your method and lock the rust with varnish spray so it doesn't crumble (if that will work).
Good day, I really like your movie. I want to keep the rusty surface of the sheet metal. Can you recommend a colorless varnish that protects the surface and does not rust further? It doesn't slow down. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any krylon crystals. I don't know what it could be? And how to use it. Thank you Selmeci
I rather liked the uneven look of parts of it, very natural looking. Would you share the source/contact info where you purchase the metal, I am looking for a good supplier. Nice informative video. Subscribed & Thanks for sharing!
Thanks.. my metal source is Alice & Jay wholesale in Sasser Ga. Google them and you'll find their website. Awesome folks to work with and they also do custom metal.
Yes, you can use the same mixture on wood and it will oxidize the wood as if it's been weathered. Adjusting the steel wool and vinegar mixture gives different shade of a "natural" stain. Enjoy!
I'm doing it on corten steel, which cannot be cracked by your bare hands and actually becomes stronger as it weathers. Then a coating is applied to keep it from rusting in the traditional sense. Learn more about metals.
Thank. I need rust so I paint chassis saver. Chassis saver won’t work on bare metal. I shouldn’t have sanding. Damnit. Just scaled rust with needle scales
It will work well with that. Remember, this is surface rust at first but over time will become more permanent. You'll want to be careful as it dries not to brush it off. That's why some kind of clear coat helps keep it on the metal.
Do you have any advice for rusting a spot that was once rusty? I’m trying to re-patina the roof of my car. It has rust for many years and was recently sanded to smooth the surface to prep clear coat. I’m looking to bring the brown and red rust tones back, and nothing seems to work.
Hi Adam, sorry I really don't have any advice on that. If it's bare metal I'm sure it will rust on its own if left out in the elements. However, I have seen some paint and auto body shops that may be able to give you a faux rust patina with paint then clear coat it. Good luck!
Steve Hall I appreciate the advice. It seems like a very specific ask of me, so it makes sense it’s be hard for someone who has already done the same. Anyways, great informative video, and thanks for your help!
Hi Steve Hall, we are trying this, and we cut up 0000 fine steel wool pad into white vinegar, and it did not dissolve or turn rusty like in your bottle. What are we doing wrong?? Help!
Hi it may take several days for it to dissolve. Just don't put a top on the bottle of it's plastic it will cause the bottle to burst. Stir it every few days to help it dissolve
Do you have to be in the sun for this to work? I live in MN and it's winter and the sun is hard to come by. :) We would like to do this process in the basement, but we'll wait if it doesn't work well. Any advice would be appreciated!
Thanks for the reply, I should clarify. I mean if you leave a bottle of muriatic acid open the vapor alone will rust metal even if it doesn’t touch the metal. Will this do the same or is it only whatever the liquid comes in contact with? Thanks again I enjoyed your video.
@@hoopergaragetv608 it's not like muratic acid in the fact that the vapors are that corrosive. I mix this up by the gallon and you do have to leave the top off for about a week or the bottle will explode. Found that out the hard way and it made quite the mess in my shop. Just leave it in a ventalated area.

This is real popular in old car mods, all you need to do id spray a clear coat top coat and be done.
For the rest of us who use the Metric system, 8 ounces = 236.588 ml ^^"
Thanks for the video. I’m going to use this process on some wine barrel metal.

To achieve a " leopard skin" affect I sprinkle citric acid using a salt shaker very lightly over the wet peroxide then let it dry

Is it bare metal or is it galvanized?
Hello! Why don't you use just water and salt and leave it for one night? Is it too aggressive?
Very very cool. Nice work

I don't mean to sound rude but what's the point of rusting metal?
there are certain things in life, rusted metal looks simply better...
@@letterli I don't believe so, but it ain't affecting me none and it's your money so I respect it
Do you know what product you could spray over it to preserve the look?
I use a flat clear spray like krylon
I read a comment down below that this process will work on any metal except aluminum. What will work on aluminum if you know, please?
Aluminium doesn't rust, but you can buy a specialized paint that contains iron filings that will rust on the surface.
Hi, Steve! Thanks for sharing, but I'll like to see the same effect on wood!! Is it possible?

Was the metal cold rolled? If not did you remove the mills ale first?
Do you know if this will work on an outside sign? Will the rain wash it away?
why is the wood rusting?
How to make rusty metal eat steel, and easily cracked by bare hand?
I'm doing it on corten steel, which cannot be cracked by your bare hands and actually becomes stronger as it weathers. Then a coating is applied to keep it from rusting in the traditional sense. Learn more about metals.
Would a lacquer clear work over the rust?
Thanks they look really good
Yes, a flat clear lacquer is what I use.

Will this technique work on recently sand blasted steel? Or do you have a technique to distress recently sandblasted steel? Thank you.

You can use vinegar alone, just takes longer.
Fantastic job. Making some industrial sliding doors. Exactly what I was looking for

Hey Steve. Curious if this mixture will work on stainless steel?
I doubt it, it may discolor it but won't rust it.
I have to test on a sunny day but I usually use salt and Vinegar. But that was mostly soaking thinks In a jar.
Very nicely done...Will use
This is great!
where did you store the bottle of vinegar and steel wool to dissolve
Just in my shop at about 75 degree temperature.

No you don't, it just speeds up the process. You can also use a heat gun or hair dryer if you want to dry it quicker.
@@stevehall61ify Thank you!
Nice
Hello sir , can you please let me know the difference between flat clear lacquer and clear lacquer ? Is normal clear lacquer is enough ?
Flat has no shine to it so it appears more like natural rust.
Will this rust other things in my shop like muriatic acid?
Yes, what ever metal this comes contact with will corrode or rust except aluminum. So it's best to do it outside or in a controlled environment.

Travis Winn no, it does not.
Thanks.
is this working on galvanized sheet metal?
Dimitris Lianos no, this is just raw sheet metal.

And can I use this process on Cast iron? (thanks again)

Wow 😲
Why do most 'How To Rust Metal' videos say use 'white vinegar'? What is wrong with say 'brown vinegar'?
You can use either distilled vinegar or apple cider vinegar.
@@stevehall61ify Thanks Steve. Your video is actually my favorite. Quick and easy. Noted with thanks.
Best I've seen ... I don't like the muriatic acid recipes - dangerous. And rusts everything in sight!
