- It's finally here: The Akira 35th Anniversary Box Set from Kodansha!!! I wanted to do something a little more than just unbox this beast. I also compared it to previous versions of Akira released in America by Epic, Dark Horse and the Kodansha trade paperbacks. I hope you viewers enjoy!
You can purchase this wonderful box set here:
www.amazon.com...
I think their reasoning with the sound effects were that they were hand drawn by Otomo, and this printing is trying to preserve Otomo's original work for the collected editions as much as possible. I'd agree though that sound effects should usually be printed in the margins if this is the case, going to the index is a hassle, but for the most part I think the reader can safely assume the sounds based on the action in the panel. You're right though that there are cases where this is not quite applicable.
You are completely correct. They really wanted to stay as true to the original as possible. It's easy to adapt to though, of course over two decades of reading Tokyopop translations did help.
There are a lot of scenes that the sounds hints at things that are happening off panel, its idiotic not putting the translation of them off panel, like they do in some texts on the backgrounds, but i agree with them not messing up the art of otomo
@@alexworm1707 Yeah but like stated above, use the margins for the translation SFX is bang or boom etc, or write it small under the original sound effect like some other manga has done, so it;s big japanese sound effect with boom written right beneath the effects.
@@Xman80888 I like how berserk did it in the deluxe edition, just write it very small under the panels.
I don't know enough Japense to read it untranslated without stopping to translate with a dictonary or google translate pretty often, but I do know Hiragana and Katakana. I can sound out what the sound effect is because of that, and so I prefer to the orignal Japanese sound effects on the panels.
HHAHAHAHAHAHAH YES AS SOON AS I BECOME A HUGE AKIRA FAN THE BOX SET COMES OUT- ANDY SENPAI APPROVES
bruh in my country akira 35th is selling for like 600+ dollars... i will probably just have to get the normal paperbacks in left to right
@@ahaan8388 damn it’s been 3 years since I said that lmaooo I’ve read the box set twice
@@AndySenpai oh didnt notice that also would you recommend it? is it worth buying(normal not box set)
@@ahaan8388
It's at 250 euros on BD today. While at 205 euros on Blackwells.
The thing is if you were to buy the 6 volumes separately [not the boxset] it would cost you approximately 140 to 150 euros.
Are the additional 50 to 60 euros [to get the boxset] really justified? You essentially pay for the Akira Club Artbook, the box, and the sticker!
And of course for the overall value this boxset offers - but this is mostly for collectors... 🙄
@@ahaan8388 buy the box
original sound effects were announced as part of the package. It wasn't due to lack off effort but a conscious decision from Kodansha
Definitely not a deal breaker, just a pet peeve of mine that I've had since the days of Tokyopop. I completely understand the artist not wanting their art tampered with, however.
that90shyde the translations should be in the bottom of each Page, not in a index
I would be completely okay with that, like the way they do Berserk. I was never a fan of putting the in the index, because I'm not one to flip back and forth while reading.
that90shyde its Just common sense, its idiotic to have to flip around the book to understand what you are reading but its better then destroying the art at least
What I don't understand is if all the text is going to be translated into English, then they might as well have just translated the sound effects as well!
With the books being full of English text...the desire to "keep things original" kind of becomes a moot point!
However, I'm fine with the sound effects being in Japanese although I wish they had put the translations on the same page(s)!
Missed out on it last year, but I managed to finally get my box set now. Very happy!
It's a great box set. Congratulations!
Few reasons why I'm debating getting this box set. First, this is a very nice box set and I just learned recently how even looking at a well presented collection is tempting. Second, I like checking out original source material to shows that I really enjoyed so I can get more out of it. And last, this has an art book in it and I love my art books.
Yes. The artbook alone went out of print for years and it was the price of the box set. So I'm glad they decided to go this route.
It is killer
I've watched this way too many times, I don't know why, I just love this unboxing, thank you.
Sound effects are part of the art. Glad they left it the way they did. Thanks for the video
Thank you for watching and it's a gripe I've always had with manga. Perhaps a footnote at the bottom of the panel or in small letters like in Berserk would have worked. I just I'm not the type to go back and forth between the book.
Near Mint Condition I liked the first 10 or so volumes I have of Berserk where the sound effects are translated in small writing. Not offensive at all. When they started putting the sound in it's own dialog box I found it really distracting. I do agree with you on one thing, Oliffe killed the colors in the Epic edition. Some of the best coloring ever. Again great video. I'm curious how you got your box set? I had pre-ordered on Amazon and it said it was sold out the day it was supposed to come out. Instocktrades.com says it doesn't come out until Nov. 8. Just curious because I've been waiting months to get my hands on a set.
I got mine from Amazon as well. Had it preordered Day 1 since they teased the box set. I know that Instock is getting their shipment in next week and Amazon should be getting their second batch in next week as well. Some people got them from Barnes and Noble and Book Depository this week.
@@NearMintCondition Easy to fix! Just print the translation on a paper or you could even just right them down. Now you can read it with the translations right beside you!
@@themagnificentsteiner8600 not the worst idea. :)
Thank you for the comparison video. I decided to go with the paperback version as I prefer the left to right format and the English sfx. Awesome video!
Glad it was helpful!
I don't care about the non-translated sound effects, they're easy enough to understand.
I understand that, but sometimes it's necessary when setting up scene.
I really hate when they translate kana kana sounds effects to english ruin it . To be honest the color version of epic looks kinda lame for my opinion I prefer black or white or the color version of jojo .
@Fun1sKing yeah I’m gonna pass on that😂
@@NearMintCondition Otomo wanted his original sound effects in this version. It’s like complaining that manga is right to left
Never owned or read any manga before but after watching your videos for Akira, Berserk and Alita and loving the Akira and Alita movies I decided to give manga a go and ordered the two Berserk deluxe volumes, the Akira 35th anniversary boxset and the Alita deluxe boxset. Just received the Berserk volumes and Akira boxset today (hopefully Alita won't be far behind) and they are stunning. The Berserk deluxe volumes look so much more expensive than they were and the artwork looks even better close up. The Akira boxset just blew me away. The quality throughout is insane although I do have to admit I thought that the books would be a little heavier than they are (not including the Akira Club book which is pretty heavy). Its a shame that the full colour pages are only in the beginning of each volume because the full book in colour would have been fantastic. I can't wait to read through these and see where the stories go. Thank you Omar as always for the awesome videos.
I can't wait for you to get it and please let me know how you like it. :)
Same here although I am slightly reluctant to purchase Berserk as I am told that it is still ongoing?
@@Saicofake it looks like there will be 13 or 14 volumes and most of them have been published already. It will probably take three years to get to the point where these volumes are published in deluxe format. I think you'd be pretty safe collecting these books.
@@Saicofake It is still ongoing.
I hope for 40th Anniversary, Kodansha releases the Akira Hardcover Boxset with the Steve Oliff color pages.
💯% agree with you Thomas! A petition needs to get going for a revamp of Akira in color! Preferably a collected edition of the epic comics version.
Oh.
I would like a full color, original right-to-left, oversized, hardcover box set (with translated sound FX). Also, jealous of your collection.
Perhaps one day we will get that. Those colors belong to Epic (Marvel) so who knows where the rights would even lie.
it is right to left
@@NearMintCondition Can you check with David Gabriel? Would be awesome!
Great review,do you know if there might be a color release?for me the perfect set would be like this but color and translations.also what difference does it make mirrored or reading it left to right?i have the large American Kodansha volumes you have with translated sound effects.in your honest opinion,I know the hardbacks a cooler and better quality but what is the better read?
Kodansha with the English sound effects and reading the opposite way or this new release with the correct manga reading way but no English sound effects.i know this is better paper and hardbacks, but minus all that, nice box etc.which is the best read if you had to choose.thank you
mrdaflyguy the 30th anniversary box is colored, but I think it wasn't released in the US, only Europe (and Japan)
That looks so beautiful! I need it!!!
My manga collection is slowly getting bigger I have now Battle Angel alita Deluxe Edition 1-3 and got children of the whiles vol 1 and early today I ordered in Knights Of Sidonia, Master Edition 1 by Tsutomu Nihei Paperback Book. At my local book store
Lol the sound effects are a part of the artwork, can you not imagine what the sound effect would be? Translating text that is part of the art devalues the work.
I understand. But since graphic novels are a medium that rely not only on art but words, sound effects very important for some scenes to set the tone. For example. Imagine a set up to a murder that’s about to happen on page three of a story. But you don’t hear the footsteps sound effects or the sound of a gun cocking. Not a deal breaker by any means, but it does add to the experience.
original SFX is always a good thing.
ya but it's weird Kodansha didn't put the English sfx in the manga like they always do. One thing I like kodansha they usually kept the original Japanese sfx with small English sfx.
YESSS!!!!! BLACK AND WHITE !!!!!
The way it was originally drawn. I would however, one day buy the color version done by Steve Oliff and crew in HC.
In my opinion, the color version is a sacrilege. It only hinders. The drawing is so beautiful that it has to be appreciated in black and white, just as its creator conceived it, I would only accept a version colored by the same artist in traditional media.
The only reason that Marvel (Epic) decided to color the manga was because they didn't think it would sell in America. Each page had to be approved by Otomo himself so it wasn't without his stamp that these pages saw print. But yeah, the black and white art is so raw and powerful.
Also after watching the movie and the amazing color style of it going to the epic comic releases with that... dull coloring is kinda underwhelming.
At least with black and white I can picture the coloring style of the movie filling up the pages.
Great video👍 I really appreciated the comparisons to earlier editions. I didn't know the original issues were full color, so that was really cool to see. I've been a fan of the anime since I was a kid and I was lucky enough to get this collection when it first came out. I still haven't opened the box yet because I'm kinda intimidated by the page count, but since the Covid-19 pandemic, I've seriously wanted to start it. Watching this video makes me want to open it right now!
Glad you enjoyed it and I hope you get to read this great series.
Awesome review, thanks so much for your in-depth comparisons :D
It says that the sound effects are a feature on the description paper. "A revise and updated translation that includes Katsuhiro Otomo's original hand-drawn sound effects, never before seen in an English edition." They probably wanted to deferentiate more from there standard paper backs more than just it's now Hard Cover and Standard Right to Left Japanese Style. I personally prefer the translated sound effects as well, I prefer the Right To Left for Manga unless it was intended to be Left to Right like some older manga, I heard some of Tezuka's stuff wasoriginally Left to Right. But like you said in the video the sound effect's set up some scene's like a robot slowly aapproaching, we here it before we see it, but if it isn't translated the we either guess or wait until we see the context of the scene the mentally add a fitting sound effect, I see it as point less, it's a translation so keep it translated.
One of the unique selling points I think of this edition was to keep the original sound effects. The previous box set was translated I think, and also coloured.
You are correct. Every edition of Akira released in America has had the translated sound effects and mirrored flipping of the artwork so it can be read left to right. The only color edition released here was the one done by Epic (Marvel).
So they did not flip it in this one? I am still waiting for my copy.
PS. The sound is VERY low on your recording, I can barely hear you and my volume is all the way up.
Oh crap. Only now I realize it is right to left reading. Well, that is going to be a fun experience. :)
Cannot wait to reread this, it has been 15+ years and I only read the colored version.
Awesome vid! Thanks for the comparison. :)
Thank you for watching, hermano.
Hi Omar, do you know what the chances are of a (re)print of Marvel's epic comics version of Akira in collected edition form? How can we get a petition going? Keep up the good work! Cheers!
I say no. Because of copyrights. Unless something happens to Kodansha.
These sound effects are made by Otomo himself - so don't worry and be proud 😊
Great video man
Thank you for watching and the kind words.
I have a question: is the manga in colors? cuz i couldnt help some or actually alot of them were colored
This particular box set is in black and white. The Akira manga released by Epic (Marvel) had the Steve Oliff colors added to it. Sadly the trades of those have been out of print for years.
The Portuguese version of Akira has the translation of the sound effects right below the original symbol
Amazon still hasnt shipped mine. Instocktrades does even list this anymore. Cant wait to get my set
Instock will be getting them next Tuesday and I'm sure that Amazon will get their second batch next week as well.
Yeah same here, I pre ordered it from amazon 6 months ago within the hour and I'm still waiting...
I knew it I wasn't the only to have a pet peeve of Manga Publishers not redrawing the sound effects into english !
You are not alone, brother.
@@NearMintCondition I got a question if it's JoJo's Bizarre Adventure would you get tick off of the untranslated sound effects or you like it because that's the whole charm of Jojo

This is Master ART, teh best AKIRA Collectio in The Word...
Thank for video...
Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
If anyone has ever read the manga I have a question. If I’ve seen the film is it a good idea to start reading at the half way point (from what I’m told one half of the story is the movie) or should I read the entire thing to get a better understanding or read something that wasn’t in the film?
I strongly suggest reading from the beginning. No need to skip any of the first few books. Things play out a little different and side characters are introduced towards the beginning that play a bigger role on the second half.
Read all of it
It's the goat manga and anime in my opinion
The sound effect index is pretty stupid TBH. They should've put the translations at the bottom of each page.
I thought about that too, but I get it. They want the pages as close to the original.
Even though the box set looks really cool it is VERY pricey. Would I still get the same story if I get the paper back?
You would 100%
can you buy the older all colour version on amazon ? ?
It's hella expensive.
I've only just started reading it but so far I'm not digging the right to left reading too much, I keep looking at the wrong panels. Also, for us westerners the mirror effect (compared to our version) just looks wrong. Maybe it's just me and maybe my brain will get used to it but it's something to think about if considering to buy (although it's probably going to be an easy resell).
Love the black and white version though and must say that binding is great quality and pages are nice and thick, very good quality for a black and white book.
It's been 10 months since you posted this comment, did you ever finish reading the books? if so, what'd you think? Did your brain eventually adjust to the right-to-left style? I'm guessing this was your first manga that you've read.
Weebs will always tell you English SFX doesn't matter, but there's no way in hell I'm flipping back and forth every twenty seconds, especially with a hardcover book that can wear more than a paperback this way. Some don't care but I've always thought that SFX are very important for context. English SFX replacements or SFX translations in the margins I'm happy with. But no, not an index. Deal breaker for me, thanks for saving me money.
I tip for sound-effects is to just learn Katakana. Since most of the time that's the way they are written. Espacially if you read alot of manga. This way you can read the sounds and will never need them to be translated ever again.
So what should I order guys?
Does the mirror affect the synergy and the feeling about the story?
Go for it, you won't look back! :)
Awesome thanks
Thanks for doing this video I’m been wanting to see what this looks like
It's weird that Kodansha didn't put the English sound effect like they always do in their manga.
Amzing set,but I'm sort of glad I didn't buy it now.the sound effects are a must for me.an ideal set for me would be exactly this set,but with sound effects and full color,I've yet to,read it in color
Is this the best box-set
It is.

Learn katakana for sound effects!! 😂 Awesome review. Thank you!
Glad you enjoyed! my cohost Maddie suggested I do the same. :)
I can read katakana but that still doesn't help with knowing what a bunch of sounds are. I wouldn't have known "guruguru" is a sound effect for twirling until I googled it lol.
Some like DON or BAN is obviously like boom and bang, but I've had it plenty of times where they're not easy to figure out what they are.
For me this sort of thing is a deal breaker. No English sound effects, no purchase. So unsurprisingly I basically only own Viz books since they translate sound effects in nearly all of their titles.
Call me old fashioned but I expect a translated book to be translated haha.
I take issue with getting the "Japanese experience" argument people make because it's not true, a Japanese reader can read the sound effects and know what they are without having to flip to an index or hop on google. The real experience is being able to read the book properly.

Great review. Could you please supply some more info about the colour versions you show at 6:08 and 8:15. I'm interested in getting some of the Akira anime, but there are a lot of different releases, and I'm trying to understand what has been released, and what's still available. Thank you...
Omar, is there a color collection of Akira other than the issues published by Epic?
Sadly, not at this time. The only collections of the color issues from Epic were done by Marvel and they never finished them. They did 10 or 11 volumes that left out the last few issues.
The Marvel/Epic books are complete, but only as a 38-issue set, I believe. They never released the final 2 or 3 compendiums. I have about half of the issues and will try and complete my collection at some point. The covers and full color are amazing and i like the smaller issues.
Bro i’ve been searching this box set in India for like 2 years (as i live there lol). I finally found a seller who’s selling it for like $375. Should i just break the bank and buy it or do u think they’ll be a reprint or something?
Over here in America, since they already released it again, they also translated the sounds effects and everything if I’m not mistaken.
Can't decide - color version or original..Want both
I have to say that the color is wonderful and I would rebuy it if they released it in color.

Can you still get the Akira manga?
I think its OOP right now.
Yes you can
Cool
2:20 What's up with all that japanese that wasn't translated?
The way Otomo wanted it.
what about the translation (of the story)? I read that the whole series went under a revision to make this edition more accurate from that point of view. Can you confirm?
It's different than both the Epic and Dark Horse translation as I don't speak Japanese, I can't confirm if it's closer to the original or not.
Personally, unnecessary subtitles and translation annoy me. I don't watch a ton of anime, and read even less manga, but I can't stand it when things that don't need subtitled, like in-universe text such as signs and OP/ED song lyrics, I find it to be unnecessary and distracting, and I think that goes for SFX text too.
I think some sound effects are necessary for the story. Not all the time, but sometimes they do help. Although in this case, it doesn't take away from the experience.
Any news about the reprint? especially if it´s gonna have the soundeffects translated? I sold my coloured Portuguese version to get this one!!
Nothing yet.
What is the best way to read akira. Price is not a problem which one should i get i have never read it.???????????
If price isn't a problem, I strongly suggest this new release. It's amazing and the closest to the original release that we have ever gotten.
Was there a limited supply on this ?? It’s out of stock on Amazon and I don’t wanna miss out on this set
I think Amazon just underordered the box set. They should get their second batch next week. I know Instocktrades is getting their box sets next week.
Doing my research to see which version to get and man I don’t think I can live with those untranslated sound effects. Softcovers aren’t perfect either but if I get tired of waiting it out I may just go w those.
BTW, it’s so weird to see you try to review a book w one hand like an amateur 😂
Hahaha this was during the day when I had the manual lens on the camera. Things have changed.
Instead of a lengthy list of sound effect "translations," all that is needed is a table of katakana.
I still like those translations.

Found a heavily discounted copy of this at Chapters; what a find!
Hell of a find, my brother.
Hate how they've always heavily limited the re-releases of Akira in any graphic novel format? All these sets except for the European 6 volume sets are way too expensive and far more limited than most mangas out there. Love the series to pieces but i just hate how unavailable it mostly is, due to so few copies ever being released of the special anniversary boxset editions or colour versions etc's! Mangas always have this problem about'em which i so despise on their limited runs on any particular series.
MGSBigBoss77 I will say it’s odd. Because reprints of this particular box set has been reprinted twice.
Near Mint Condition Same goes for the coloured Fist Of The Northstar volumes. Saw them years ago, try getting them now though? Their prices are absolutely ridiculous online (Ebay, Amazon). its not only Akira believe me on that.

Nice to see someone else with the Epic set, glad I bought mine 10 years ago before the prices started stacking up, people are wanting crazy prices for number 38 these days. Just wish I had bought the Mcfarlane toy line when they were cheap
I keep seeing that. I ain't given them up unless they release Hardcover editions with Steve Oliff covers in Europe.
Has anyone gotten this with some of the books with upside down binding. I'm worried mine will come damaged
I haven't seen or heard of this misprint. All I heard about were dinged box sets or horrible shipping methods with no outer box. Both Amazon and Instock have a great return policy, the thing is you'll have to wait until it's back in stock.
Near Mint Condition ohh okay I saw some people on amazon talk about it and yeah hopefully it doesn't I'd have to wait a while. Great set though can't wait to read it. Also great video btw
Thank you for watching, brother and it is really an amazing set.
The sound effects in the Dark Horse versions are placed over the art, killing the flow of scenes and beautiful images. The Japanese sound effects are much better placed here. The more disappointing point of the Kodansha set is the better paper, newsprint much better for the black and white effect.
I've grown to appreciate it.
