This is Charcoal is a culmination of my emotions over the last few years - finding myself lost in my own creativity as I grow into an adult, battling the voices I have in my head that stemmed from a childhood of constant judgement and striving to please people that can never be satisfied.
I have been a big fan of Porter Robinson ever since my best friend Jack introduced me to Shelter back in 2016. To use his music as an outlet for these emotions has been very relieving as the lyrics from his most recent album Nurture follows Porter going down a similar path of dealing with the struggles of self-criticism.
This all ties back to the object show community. We’re all a bunch of artists, animators, voice actors, creatives in general making our way through the wider world through our object shows. Especially since most us are young, we are constantly shaped and moulded by people around us and that can have very profound effects as we grow.

Dude, this hits very deeply at home to me. I’ve been struggling a lot with my inner voice and what it’s telling me to do, but I reject the negative thoughts given to me. You gotta remain strong and hang in there because in the end, it’s going to be okay! Absolutely stunning animated music video, Kat!

This does go deeper in though once you look further into the song. It’s not just a song, but a message.
I..... Don't even know what to say to you.
It felt like one of the many masterpieces of the world on a physical form, or in this case, a virtual form.
It felt like you were trying to send out your emotions to make you feel the need to get help, with Charcoal taking pieces of himself to draw that black heart.
And to let others know what were you feeling.
It was even surprising that I saw Pizza (AOS) and Quicksand (Quicksand114) as a part of this.
It felt, rather invigorating to know that everything will be okay and to not let others who said the negative things get to you. I guess you can say that, we'll be there for you, because we're not alone.

aww man. this is so inspiring. it makes me happy to see how they helped charcoal find his worth. this reminds me a lot about me in my life, picking away parts of me to give to others just to get disapproval and dissatisfaction from others who did not deserve you. and most definitely others relate too. thank you katy, for bringing us this masterpiece. it makes me feel at home in the osc.

Hi. I just wanted to share, I watched this video for the first time a few years ago (on another account). That was around the time I started dealing with some difficult things. Honestly, discovering this and rewatching this brings back a flood of memories of a time where even though things were difficult, it was different because I was younger. Every time I felt sad or discouraged I would come back to this video and it provided a sense of comfort.
A lot of things have happened since then and coming back makes me nostalgic for a time where things were a little different. Thank you for making this video and giving me something that allowed me to cope at that time, that lets me look back and think about how far I’ve come. Thank you, kat.
I have anxiety and depression and this is the best song I've ever seen portraying it. Thank's for making this.
I'm sure there are people that really need this video, it explains how you shouldn't let negative opinions stop you from being, well, you. If you enjoy doing something and it doesn't hurt anyone then do it, the only person that can stop you from doing something is yourself, your own opinion is the most important for what you do.

To my interpretation, Charcoal using pieces of themself to draw refers to their time left.
After all, making big projects take a while, sometimes years. You would know that, Katy98j.
That's why charcoal used up do much of their body to make that heart: It was a big project that took over half their life.
And although they're far closer to dying, they're at least whole.
