Note that talaromycosis is mainly encountered in Southeast Asia (e.g., Thailand), eastern India, and Southern China. Where encountered in HIV-positive individuals from this region, it is considered an AIDS-defining illness.
Considering his respiratory symptoms, it is quite possible that they too are due to talaromycosis; P. jirovecii pneumonia and tuberculosis are the other important possibilities.

One thing you didn't mention is that cambodian people can speak english very well. You can get by anywhere if you speak english. Cambodia is one of my favorite countries! Such a lovely people. As a history buff, I can't help but be fascinated by the culture, whether it's the Khmer Empire from a 1000+ years back or the modern-day stuff. There's a lot of sadness in the stories, but also just a wonderful, vibrant culture. One of the top countries my wife and I have ever had the pleasure to visit.
You know people who visit Cambodia think that by visiting the Angkor temples they have seen or witness the great Khmer culture but this is not true. If one wants to witness the Khmer culture in true greatness they have to visit all the Khmer temples built across all of mainland South East Asia to get a sense of the scale and magnitude of what use to be Cambodia in the past.
Strongly recommend visiting Cambodia. I had an amazing trip there 2 years ago. Great video!

My best friend is from Cambodia. We talk a lot about the Khmer Rouge: her grandma had to flee from Cambodia and gave birth to her mom in Thailand. They moved to Canada and her grandma eventually moved back to Cambodia after the Khmer Rouge were taken down. She gets really upset that her family doesn't participate in a lot of Cambodian things other than the food and religion. It's sad to read and talk about the Khmer Rouge but the people are bringing them selves back up quickly and relatively efficiently!
