Yea, im guessing rainy season is over for a bit. Its nice to know my odds of catching fish in some of these creeks has gone up as the water levels have gone down.
Longear is my favorite sunfish, but I don't think they are found in the NoVA/DMV area. Caught some nice pumpkinseeds, green sunfish, and bluegills this week, though
@@goldenratfishing4411 Super helpful, thx! I am new to native fish, but a long time aquarist. Among pumpkinseed, bluegill, longear, crappies, black banded sunfish, green sunfish, do any stay about 7" or longer as adults? I'm asking cuz I think having pound-plus sized fish would be beyond my experience level
@@leyenda6149 I dont think they will grow to be that large in captivity but I am not certain. It may have to do with with aquarium size. I had a few bluegill in a tank and they did reach over a lb even after a year.
This is a great video. Shows how much fun fishing can be, even in a built-up environment. If you keep a few of these in a coldwater aquarium, their mouth will heal in a few days and they are cool to watch. They act like a big cichlid (Jack Dempsey) in a 55 gallon tank, meaning that they won't tolerate others in their tank for very long.
Would you consider doing some videos for ppl to learn how to ultralight fish? I know there's a bunch on YT, but your credibility is super high, so I'd kinda rather learn from your postings. I'm sure I am not alone there
thanks man...I got a few, I don't know if they are micro but I'll throw them in the next video. So far I've had very little success using spinners other than inline spinners such as rooster tails. Next video I will try though and upload the results. Thanks again for the support!!
Yeah my mom says bluegill and longears are dirty muddy nasty animals. She says we can’t have a bluegill if it will be a display tank when bluegill are prettier than a lot of cichlids including Oscars
I'm going to do this in the Cahaba and make an aquarium with my son. I live in Bham and the Cahaba has a ton of different species, I would love to get a few of those really bright sunfish.
+Matt Hendrick oh man the skunk never run but it happens!! Thanks for stopping by and watching the video good luck getting a pumpkin seed this year man!!
Hi friend thanks for sharing ur video! I’m a big fan of panfish fishing and dedicated good amount of investment into JDM ultralight rod/reel just them. I’m from west coast..meaning only bluegill and green sunfish here. I’d like to fly to part of east coast to catch other sunfish like Pumpkin seed, do you mind sharing your location? If not I can understand.
Great video I like the care you show handling and releasing the fish . Just a tip about your jig head for soft plastic baits . You can cut a staple in half making an "L" shape and tie it to the jighead with nylon thread or very thin braided line and then coat the thread with super glue so it stays tight . Next bend the leg of the staple forward and trim to desired length with some cutters . This will keep your plastic baits from sliding down the hook and getting torn up making them last a whole lot longer .
You just gave me a great idea for my son and me to do this Sunday on Father's day. He's been begging for an aquarium. Any specific aquarium you prefer? Any tips? I've never had an aquarium
@@cross_fire_ depends on the species too, but 55g per fish is a safe bet. If you go with dollar sunfish or pumpkinseeds you might be able to put two in a 55. If you go with green sunfish or warmouth, probably just one.
He bud. Get a 40 gallon breeder. They are the perfect size for starters and you don’t need to buy an expensive stand for them like bigger ones. If you can catch 2 sunfish that are under 3 inches you can safely grow them out in that aquarium. Blue Spotted sunfish are the smallest in the genus and typically only grow 5-6 inches. They are very colorful and would be perfect to start with. If you get anything under 50 gallons then I wouldn’t suggest Green sunfish. Blue gill. Bass. War mouth redear red breasted of long ear because they are to big. Dollar, spotted (red or blue), and pumpkinseed sunfish would be the best. The others will grow over a half lb and need more space
Wow you do a great job on your videos! Great edits and some beautiful fish you caught. Jealous tho cuz I’ve been hunting for sunfish like that to put in my tank for such a long time! Great video!👍
Never seen so many sunfish in one spot, I believe that really pretty fish is a long ear. Nice video!
Fun video. Really enjoyed it
Amazing colors on that fish!
Keep it up brother
The water is looking a lot better. Nice looking fish

I think that second one was a long Ear Sunfish. I go fishing for Long Ear Sunfish and that looks just like one
Longear is my favorite sunfish, but I don't think they are found in the NoVA/DMV area. Caught some nice pumpkinseeds, green sunfish, and bluegills this week, though
I think it was a long eared sunfish due to the squared opurculum.
KN Fishing Smarts channel is the best in ID of sunfish
Ethen , I’m in Cali and would like to have longear in my pond , would you consider catching about 15 -20 and selling to me ?
3:28 is a longear for sure. I've got a good sunfish ID video on my channel. I personally think longears are the most beautiful sunfish out there.
I have a 90 gal. Is that big enough for 1-3 wildcaught sunfish?
I'm sure that would work. Maybe start with 2 and see how it goes.

How do I distinguish male & female pumpkinseeds? Ditto for Longears & Bluegills
Into 3:45 minutes into the video that's a longear sunfish and not a pumpkinseed.

Crazy glue makes them stay
Kinda crazy you didn’t catch any Bluegill. Some time when I go out the only thing I catch is tons of Bluegill!
You are so lucky to have those southern sunfish species. Gorgeous. Fun video!
Glad I found your channel, the music and videos are great.

I will start back next month. I won't have a car until then but as soon as I get transportation again I will for sure, thank you!!
Might need to get some of those little craws. Looks like they did you well. I usually just use parts of old soft plastics haha
Yeah for me nothing beats the old chunk of old power bait worm. They love that stuff.
Does anyone know where I can buy longear sunfish , we don’t have them in Cali , I would like to get at least dozen and will pay good price for them
Nice video buddy! You ever thought of throwing a micro spinner? lol.

Golden Rat Fishing No problem man! Just want to see you make it one day 🙏🏼 Hopefully all goes well with the spinner.
Awesome video! I subbed. Those longear sunfish sure are great looking. I have a big fish tank with a beautiful one in it

Snow Blind yea that was a Long Ear Sunfish, I just caught some today

@John B thanks! That may be a bit too big for us then. May have to downsize and get regular fish.

You should find a good place to find orange spotted sunfish, they are kinda same size of a Bluegill and have orange spots.
