I typically dig a hole in it to also remove the thick middle vein part of the dragon fruit root stock, which goes rather deep into the sion. Glad to see it working for you like this as well.
You're showing others that it's okay to do this to the moon Cactus, they have to be grafted to a rootstock or they can't survive. Demonstration or not, it's the wrong way, so I would correct yourself.
@@greeneyes.1978that’s an incorrect statement on your part. This specimen has plenty of green for it to produce its own food and maintain a healthy life without the graft. Normal moon cactus at the big box stores have been bred to suppress all chlorophyll production and those will certainly die without a root stock.
@@CelticGhillie WRONG! Eventually it will die if not grafted onto a rootstock, get your facts straight! No, a moon cactus (Gymnocalycium mihanovichii) cannot survive on its own and is commonly grafted onto a rootstock plant. The colorful top part of the moon cactus lacks chlorophyll and can't tolerate direct sunlight, while the green stem-like part needs it. Grafting allows the cactus's vascular system to access nutrients from the host plant. However, grafted moon cacti are generally less hardy than those that grow from their own roots and typically only last a year or so.
@@greeneyes.1978 A moon cactus is different from a variegated gymno. Moon cactus has only one solid color throughout (either variants of yellow or red) and contain no chlorophyll. Variegated gymnos, on the other hand, have chloroplasts and can root on its own.
Amazing video, quick question though, will it work with the smaller parts that grow on the Gymnocalycium too? I have a completely red Gymnocalycium and i wondered if it'd work
Hola, no se si me puedan ayudar, yo tengo un cactus similar, pero es rojo,no tiene nada de verde,su porta injerto creo que se está secado la pregunta es : lo puedo sacar y poner directamente en sustrato
Hi I loved the video but I have a question. If this type of cacti need a host as they cannot photosynthesize how will it live on its own or did you leave some of the old cactus in there?
If the cacti doesn’t have chlorophyll..(green pigment that plants use to make food) it cannot live on it’s own and die therefore it needs to be grafted forever grafted Cactus must have at least 45% chlorophyll to be degrafted and live without a host 😊
That's an amazingly helpful video, thank you! But what do I do with the cactus that the top one was grafted on? Mine has already calloused but it isn't getting any new growth at the top, instead it started growing from the side
Cut the calloused top and use it to graft other cacti. The original cactus can't grow taller since most cactus only grow from the very top of the stem only. At best, it'll branch or produce pups
Awesome Video! 😍 Is it a Gymnocalycium mihanovichii „GLORY“? They are harder to root than other Variegated right? Have you ever rooted any of its pups? 🙂 Ich have two of them finally auctioned and would Love to get the pubs rooted. Greetings from Germany 🤗
@@SilvermoonGarden oh that is awesome! 😍 Thank you for answering that fast! ❤️ I have two glorys with a lot of Beautiful pups and I would love to root them successfully. And in the past even with Clonex on Akadama it didn‘t work. Glorys are harder to root than others in my experience. Maybe they have to be much bigger. I wait untill they have 3cm as well the Next time 😊 Greetings

nice toturial mam.. 😊 very useful for plantitas
Very nice..sana matuto din ako nian
thanks 😊
Very nice. But the plant has very little chlorophyll. I think it would've been happier with a root stock.
Yes, you are right:) but for this video is just for demonstration.. i would still prefer for it to be grafted 😅

Excellent video.
I have a question. Can this be done during winter season?

It's nice...thank you for sharing
Thank you too:)

best to re-graft again.. if the cactus doesn’t have any green the chances of rooting is 50%
That tool is perfect. What is it for usually?
Stainless Dental tool 😅😅😅
What is the name of that tool you’re using to dig out the root stock
it’s a stainless dental tool 😅
Thanks for the idea

hello great video. can i do that with Aztekium because i heard it's hard to root
yes you can, if the aztekium is grafted from seedling…
make sure the scion is matured and already flowered must be 6cm and above
@@SilvermoonGarden Can my seedlings be broken from a grafted tower?
