Why are stories so purposefully structured whereas our reality is so often messy and chaotic? Why do characters have clear transformative arcs when our identities and personal journeys are so much more complex than that? It's questions like these, and their implications that will be explored in this new series on stories versus reality.
In this first episode, I’ll be examining the foundations of storytelling, and the fundamental difference between stories and reality.

Like Stories of Old I recommend you also reference another book about human psychology: thinking fast and slow. This book, by an claimed scientist, reviews how the human mind has a tendency-purely through our cognitive apparatus-to instinctively search for cause and effect. We do it the same way that we think about a game of billiards; One action impacts another, causing a chain of events. Our cognitive abilities connect to our evolutionary need to track moving objects in order to Hunt and survive. The same cognitive apparatus controls how we structure “reality” to make sense of ourselves and the world around us; how we derive meaning from our own personal narratives. This is hardwired into our minds and is arguably a reason for why human beings tend to favor a structured storytelling, like that of the heroes journey. It’s because it’s predictable and focuses on cause and effect. It speaks directly to our cognitive capabilities and how our minds were built.

Except that doesn't reflect human nature. I believe if no obstacles existed to overcome, he would have invented some. Like a cat that pretends there is prey about in order to play, people need obstacles to overcome in order to feel a sense of progress/purpose in life. They would invent problems if they didn't exist (and often do).

Art and storytelling are distillation processes. Commenting on one of his sculptures, Michelangelo said "I saw the angel in the marble and I carved until I had set him free." That's what it is. You see a chunk of reality, identify the meaning within, and carve away everything that's frivolous, redundant, or incidental until the only thing you've got left is the meaning. I like to call this meaning "the juice." Because of this, I wouldn't say that purpose is difference between stories and reality, as is commonly assumed. The meaning was always there, it just needed to be juiced out. I think the assumption that stories inject purpose rather than draw it out is the misunderstanding that drives most of the criticism against traditional stories and their structures. Your point about the futility of trying to live storybook life is a good one, though. Nobody gets to carve out their own angel. That would be the main difference between stories and reality to me.
You raise interesting points; I want to try to probe them a little though. Apologies for the long reply, half of this was me sounding out my thoughts on paper, so to speak.
Say you had two sculptors and one block of marble. It would be a stunningly unlikely coincidence that each sculptor would see the same sculpture out of all the potential sculptures that could be carved. Who is to say that either one of them has the "correct" interpretation of what the block of marble should be? To say that meaning is simply identified, that it is something found outside one's self and without reference to one's self, implies that it should not vary at all (or at least not vary greatly) between different people with different perspectives. But this is not the case in reality, I would argue. Both sculptors see something within the block of marble that seems meaningful to *themselves,* and neither has ground upon which to claim that one or the other sculpture would have "more" meaning. Even the same work of art can be interpreted in a variety of ways from a variety of perspectives, such that the meaning Michelangelo perceived in his sculptures is not transmitting with perfect accuracy to all who view his works.
I would rather define "meaning," at least in the felt sense that something is significant rather than incidental, as something that emerges due to a coordination between someone's own inclinations and the potentiality of the world around them. At one moment one could feel that their life story is heroic in nature,and the next moment it may feel like a tragedy. Soon enough it may feel like a comedy, only to pick up again with a heroic tone at an unexpected moment. Looking back at it all, one is inclined to project a more streamlined narrative flow to events, but in reality there was no heroism or tragedy or comedy except from one's own subjective perspective. That doesn't mean it's not real of course; experiences can be real insofar as they are experiences without needing to justify themselves on the consensus of objective reality. There is of course nothing wrong with trying to argue in favor of some interpretations and against others, but at the crux of it the ability to make arguments one way or the other is the subjective nature of meaning; otherwise it would be self evident which interpretation of a piece of art is the correct one, as obvious as the color yellow or the laws of gravity.
@@flavertex658 That's because there is no correct interpretation. the only thing that is derived from the carving is that there is something to be carved out of the marble. Meaning is subjective to the artist, to the interpreter.
But I believe that the subjective meaning we derive from our perception of the world around us is rooted in archetypes, which is the only objective thing there is.
Humans are meaning making machines. Meaning exists in our own minds. There is no inherent meaning in reality.

You begin to make and live your story when you move beyond the desire for others to remember and tell it. We create our cosmic purpose. It is not assigned to us. Your life is yours to use in anyway you choose and not choosing is a choice. Work within the limits that life imposes on you while seeking to expand them where ever possible. Allow stories to inspire and guide you. Not defeat and confuse you.

Yes, because stories are human constructs that serve a purpose, while human life is an unintentional construct that spontaneously emerged from an inherently meaningless/aimless/indifferent universe - but I think you have to be completely invested in the latter to hold your statement as true. Personally, I'm not. I think there is more to reality than meets the eye, and that the common hunch that life is intentional and inherently meaningful is correct even tho we can't explain how (but I would say intentional & meaningful the way a game is rather than a story, tho games & stories definitely relate to each other. To me a story is like the winning path of a game tree - so similar to what Kierkegaard said, that "Life can only be understood backwards (the story) but it must be lived forwards (the game).")

Nice video. The difference between stories and reality is this: we see stories from the outside and we live reality from the inside. If we were the protagonist of any of the movies shown here, life would seem just as disjointed and uncertain as our own daily reality does. By the same token, if a friend could closely observe our entire life (so, from the outside), they would easily perceive the narrative thread in it. This is the fundamental difference that makes everything mentioned in the video fall into place.

The reason we are not experiencing the Hero's journey in our "ordinary" lives is that we seldom choose to find out who we really are and live authentically. Anyone who does, finds his hero's journey.

We must undergo the process of transformation indefinitely and learn to find fulfillment in the moment, not the predestined end. Thank you for work, I’m exited for this series.
I like your comment since it implies that while in stories the meaning is often found in the end result that makes everything worth it, i think in our own lives the truth lies in a ability to find meaning in every moment - no matter how it ends or what the future will hold for us. There are some moments that feel meaningful not only when i look backwards but when i live them in the present. That's something worth searching for - Finding purpose in a present and living it fully and making it meaningful because it's your decision to see it as such
I’m a 25 year old man, and to this day, I’ve always wanted to be a Jedi Knight, Spider-Man, Ned Stark or Jon Snow, Geralt of Rivia, Aragorn or any of the characters of middle earth. It’s the fantasy of being someone who’s life is of significance, to protect others through heroic deeds, to inspire others with words that fill the belly with fire. I wish I didn’t fantasise the way I do about these fantastical characters, stories and adventures but I just can’t help myself, whenever life, my life, feels dull, meaningless and just not what i want it to be. The truth is that you cannot inspire others unless you have already inspired your self. To Inspire means to draw in the spirit, and the Spirit can be called upon at any time, should you so choose. The call for adventure that you so very much long for, is yours to hear, and you can choose to hear it at any time. The call is always there, but it has been have muted by your own fear.
The truth is that any life lived with purpose is an extraordinary life. The beauty is in the eye of the beholder and who is there to behold your lived experience but you? Remember Ozymandias. No other judgemnent than yours that actually matter. The rest is dust. Riches and fame, all will fade into dust.
You are the hero of your own life. This incarnation, this short and fleeting experience of Life, is your opportunity to shape the timestream and to build upon your own salvation. This life may be your only chance to life forever, to reach beyond, to transcend. Transcendence can be found in cultivating a garden, in learning a musical instrument, in raising a family, even by sitting still under a tree.

I'm glad you´ll be possibly the first one to adress why Campbell wrote the book in the first place, how almost everywhere in human history we use this stories, not as an absolute truth, but as a kind of ritual (or trial), that we mortal beings use as inspiration to grow, to wake that need to _be more._
The hero's journey to me is more about reconnecting to real life and fighting away the fake life to emerge as the victor. It's a connection to our higher selves that most people haven't yet experienced. To me that's when the hero's journey is more obvious and seen.
Your videos made me realize that to some degree I am afraid of understanding stories because it felt like the magic within them was disappearing the more I learned. But at some point during this video, I realised that I'm not in fact doomed to never immerse myself into the wonders that are storytelling, but that I am simply drawn to different kinds of stories, kinds that might not be as common as I once thought. I could also just be reading too much into my own preferences but I don't really think that changes anything 😂 love the vid and super excited for the rest!!
Oh my... I love that you are covering this topic because it is something that was on my mind for a long time now. I realised, that I often had points in my life where I was surprised, that life can be so random and go against the story I told my life will follow. I realised that it was a lie that I had to overcome. There's no larger purpose, no narrator (e.g. god) that leads the way for me. Reality just happens and you can't expect it to do what you want.
While this sounded very depressing in the beginning, I also realised that it is liberating. If life doesn't follow the storytelling rules, they also don't come with the limitations or boundaries of a story. I could free myself from the expectations of what my life should look like and just do what makes me happy. It also means that I can decide how I see my lived life. I can change my narrative how I want. Not that I mean to bend reality and lie to myself, but to change the way I interpret what happened in my past. Because I also think that it is impossible for humans to not think of their life as a story. It just helps to realise, that no story is perfect in capturing reality. Just like a scientific model doesn't capture reality perfectly, but it can help understand it better. I think it is just important to not focus on one story alone and to not make your life's meaning dependent on it, because then, one day or another, reality will throw you off. Maybe this just means to grow up, but I feel like that a lot of people still find themself in that trap.

If we don't find purpose in our lives we all get very sad.
And the thought that maybe there isn't any real purpose afterall is very scary to us.
Stories help set the illusion that, if the character in said stories could find their purpose and have a meaningful impact on their world, maybe we can too.
All stories are mostly escapism afterall.

Excellent video Tom. 'Boyhood' and 'Paterson' are two films I can think of that don't follow the hero's journey and aren't tragedies. But even with these we can fit our own interpretation of the hero's journey on to them, I think you're right that we try to fit this pattern to everything.

He gets a new body for a new world and then his primary purpose is just to exist and explore, before he attempts to save the Navi. It's just exploring another world for a while and honestly that's perfect.
Stories are allegorical, is the thing. Unlike reality they have to make sense, because their purpose is to help us make sense of our reality. Telling stories is our way of providing ourselves with guidelines for how to act, think and feel in a universe where no such guidelines exist.
Perfect timing. As a collective we are on an immense hero's journey, yet unseen and therefore unknown to many. Resistance is futile. Denial creates the suffering. Courage is essential. Journeys end probably defied these rules so much it stayed in my head for a long time. Good movie.
There are a lot of people who's lives resemble great stories. All you need is to pursue a goal that challenges to get out of your comfort zone. Usually, a larger goal requires you to seek after/be open to meet mentors that can help you. Then you might get an important insight from a conversation with a stranger or someone you know that allows you to broaden your perspective/break through a challenge etc etc. But if you only live a safe and boring life, of course your life won't have similarities with a great story :)

It's so interesting to see how our neverending quest for meaning and purpose influences not only the stories we consciously create, but also the ones we tell ourselves, those that make us feel like...well...us.
Knowing that there is no purpose, I feel even more drawn to stories. I don't actively believe in them per se, and yet I perceive the world through their lense, and make them a part of me.

This is my favorite type of content from @LikeStoriesofOld. I’m in the middle of The Hero with a Thousand Faces now, since the questions it raises are some of the most important I’ve ever come across. In these videos, they’re asked anew: why do I feel purpose so strongly? Why doesn’t my life reflect that purpose in an obvious way? Is it damaging to set expectations based on stories when life will inevitably be so different? One of the things I’m impressed with in Campbell’s work is that this Hero’s Journey is not simply how we make movies, but how we psychologically order our lives, cultures, and religions. It makes me consider the reality of a Creator in a new light: just as some stories are far more difficult to understand as children, perhaps many life stories seem senseless to us when they are purpose-driven to Him. Just as Frodo might have thought it was senseless to go on such a long journey only to destroy the ring on accident, perhaps our lives will not make sense until a later time...when we learn that, after all, the Hero’s Journey was ingrained in our minds for a reason...that struggles lead to strength, that challenges are formative, and that a satisfying conclusion will come whether we expect it or not.

If there were more youtubers like you, then this website and it's creators would have a lot more respect and credibility.
I've always thought reality was different from stories because stories have an author who acts like a God, guiding his characters to get the story results he wants. Meanwhile, we are real and not within an authors story. And even if we are, what are the chances that we are just an extra to fill the world those characters live in?
Who's to say the author is playing God? And not just playing along with the determined nature of it all? Or who's to say that reality isn't a story? Written by an author?
Most people are NPCs.
This probably sounds corny but that is why I became a religious person. The more I became the protagonist the Author wanted in the story, the more profound my role became.
There is an author - his name is God. Jesus is the protogonist, and we are important supporting characters who go through our own arcs. Once you accept this, the world finally begins to make sense.

I'm glad I found this video because I've been puzzling about alternate ways to write stories while still keeping the audience interested. The fiction formula works but it's been done so much that I'm tired of conflict and plot. I've been writing experimental fiction with non-human characters, POV from a peripheral character, or parodies where a hero has to accomplish some mundane task like go to the grocery store. Basically, the idea is to point out that life isn't a story. Anyway, I look forward to more videos in this series.
I enjoy stories, especially old ones, because they tell us so much about ourselves. It’s remarkable how similar the ideals attributed to heroes of Ancient Greece were so similar our heroic ideals. We all want to be that hero. The one that saves the world and gets the girl. The one goes to exotic lands, makes friends far and wide, and fights evil. We don’t want to be the guy that gets groceries, or puts gas in his car, goes to work and sleeps just to wake up and do it all again. We want a fight. Just one good fight so that we can prove to ourselves we are extraordinary.
I had added this to watch later bcoz at the time of its release I wasn't ready for this.
But finally after watching this today. I have to say that not only your efforts are commendable to say the least, but this is easily one of the most ambitious projects that I have seen any Movie/TV analysis channels do.

You truly own this medium--the concoction of your voice, the visuals, the concise and cogent arguments and propositions, the questions. They all work to imbue one with a sense of wanting to read more, to write more, to do more. I will never find a channel I appreciate as much as yours. Your channel is one of the reasons why I began to read again, starting with Viktor Frankl's Man's Search for Meaning. This journey has led me to find my favorite author in Camus and my favorite writings in his novels. I hope to eventually tackle complex philosophical texts which currently remain an enigma to me and get more out of reading than I do now. Your channel will always remain a reminder of that goal, my attainable green light at the end of the dock.

I'm familiar with Campbell's work (big fan too), I always thought that the hero's journey applies to not just the over-arching course of our lives, but to most things including day-to-day activities. Most challenges in our lives when overcome- everything from developing a new product, writing a difficult paper, running a marathon, parenting, etc- when we have met the challenge we will see that it basically followed the hero's journey. I think it's a meta-tool for all problem solving, big and small.
There is something about the mixture of memory and language that churns into stories. Some that age like fine wine and some that sour and get distorted. As far back as Gilgamesh, maybe further. It seems as long as we have had the ability to imagine, we have had the ability to explore other worlds and other lives through pure thought. As far off as these stories are to my own personal life, there always seems to be some sacred connection from the story to my Spirit.
(If you do your taxes listening to James Newton Howard or Hanz Zimmer, it turns it into a very heroic task ;)
Your videos are labours of Love for me. Minor stuff like your choice of scenes as your voice narrates touch me as if someone actually knows what stuff, and which parts of stories we all have lived in this time-slice, has resonated with us.

I totally agree that we all share this innate longing for meaningful stories that show life’s connectedness and elements of destiny. Stories that try to invert this “formulaic” model like GoT or throw away the model altogether like the art house films you mentioned ironically only strengthen the archetypal narrative’s power, because in trying to be different they are all essentially saying it is indeed the narrative that rules our minds and hearts. The commercial success speaks to what we know to be all too true: we long for stories in which opponents and obstacles are brutal, right actions are rewarded, and prophecies are fulfilled.
One of the best and most underrated channels on UA-cam. I am glad I stumbled upon your channel.

You continuously remind me of the beauty of stories and, thereby, life in a way I have only very rarely experienced before... and by that, you enrich experiencing stories (and life) itself. The difference: setting and more importantly timing. Much of what happens in stories can happen and sometimes do to some extent. But the timing is so precise for each event that it is unlikely to happen naturally or regularly in our world of Being.

Very nicely done..however I would say that it is not that ones life becomes meaningful merely by the aid of hindsight .. but that it is an illusion that it is not. It is an illusion even to think that there exists a past and a future. This is the reason why stories are so meaningful to every one of us.

Sometimes it is our job to just support the hero in their journey...to recognize goodness or greatness in another, and do what we can to further that cause. So we are part of another persons heroic journey...and essential to their success.
