in Nevermind all the drums was written by Chad Channing, nirvana's past drummer, and Dave was just playing it, In Utero was when Dave was shining with his monstrous drumming ability
Kurt did double track, reluctantly, as Wayne mentioned. The secret sauce here is Grohl doing the (also double-tracked) high-end harmonies. Butch Vig commented on how great their voices sounded together. Prepare to have your mind blown lyrically: They seem like unrelated pieces of poetry because they are decoupled couplets. Match the first, second, etc. lines of each verse together: Sell the kids for food We can have some more Weather changes moods Nature is a whore Spring is here again Bruises on the fruit Reproductive glands Tender age in bloom I have always taken this song as being about the music business exploiting and selling out the artists and the fans: punk/underground/alternative scenes (in the verse), and the result being the sort of casual jock fans showing up, not understanding the content and contributing to ruining the scene (in the chorus).
The chorus is about his best friend Dylan Carlson. Kurt was mocking Dylan Coincidentally was Dylan who bought the shotgun that Kurt use to end his life
Also, there are several instances where Butch Vig (the Nevermind producer) has mentioned in various interviews that he’d straight up lie to Kurt in the studio and tell him that a malfunction had occurred to get him to re-record a vocal or a guitar section so that they could multi-track either in the booth to give it that fuller sound.
Just found this channel, awesome to have such a thoughtful guy making reactions videos with these production values. Keep it up man, you're gonna be big!
Yep, Loud - quiet - Loud - Quiet... Always got credited to the Pixies. However if you look back at some of the earliest Zeppelin tracks, they were doing it in '69 (Ramble On). Jimmy Page always called it shadows and light, or whispering to the thunder. There may have been other bands that did it prior to Zeppelin, but none as successfully as they did to my mind. Props to the the Pixies though!
Chad Channing, the drummer on Bleach (excluding Floyd the Barber and Paper Cuts, Dale Crover) actually came up with the drums here, in fact, Chad helped Dave with a lot of the drumming on Nevermind as a whole. There's an earlier version on this song recorded in 1990 I believe with Chad on drums.
Syed! When speaking about the mix and production, you’re speaking to the great Butch Vig, producer extraordinaire at the time. He was the mastermind of numerous best-selling grunge and popular artists during that era before moving onto the form and drum for electro-alt-rock band Garbage. Also Burd number correctly current wasn’t keen on this production/mix. Too “clean” comes to mind. Brilliant reactions! I’m subscribed and Trying to carve time to join the gang on Twitch.
You really have to check out "Recording Nirvana with Butch Vig". He is the producer of Nevermind and takes you through the recording of a number of the songs. The chorus of this song is about Kurt's best friend Dylan Carlson who would come over and listen to them practice and sing along to them playing. He was also a gun fanatic and is the guy that sold Kurt the shotgun that he committed suicide with.
I didn't care about music until I heard this song for the first time when I was 12. The lyrics are fitting. I didn't understand it at the time but I loved it.
the band chose to have several guitar parts in the mix. They probably doubled or tripled the guitar parts. It was a popular technique back in the day. With a three piece band you almost have to double the guitars so they sound fucking huge.
Funny thing is, this album was recorded before the band became gigantic, but after they hit the big time, Kurt absolutely became frustrated with the kinds of meat-headed frat boys who starting coming to their shows, causing a ruckus, harassing women in the audience, and not actually paying much attention to the music. The same kind of guys who bullied him only a few years earlier now pretending they were his best friends. Whether or not that's what the song is about, I don't know, but it certainly came true after the album was a hit.
yh its super funny how the world works. They might've hated him when he was younger, now they love the music. Would've been a trip for Kurt. Thanks for the comment!
Interesting thing about the lyrics, each line from the 2 verses can connect to each other line-by-line (e.g. Sell the kids for food...We can have some more, spring is here again...bruises on the fruit)
You got it on the chorus bru, its abt all the people who wouldve casted people that like punk and that sorta stuff as outcasts (Like "jocks"), now singing all their pretty songs that became super popular...they know not what it means!
I've long been in favour of double-tracking vocals, did so on my second time in a 24-trk. studio, in the main because of John Lennon too, though I didn't need to be sold, it was my request. My home stuff was all doubled. I've always loved Dave's harmonies on this one too, and his drums slay me without fail, just punishing those naughty skins. Can't imagine what they did but they must've deserved it. He seems like the final finishing touch, the secret ingredient, been there with a drummer too, the "now we've got it" moment. Great analysis, I see your 'Lithium' reaction over on the right, gotta give that a listen too. Oh, and the 'In Bloom' video is a good bit of fun too, leastways for an old fart who had ten years on Kurt, grew up first 7+ years in England, watched the Beatles and all that lot emerge. Have a peek if you're so inclined. They look to be enjoying themselves at any rate, can't begrudge 'em that, nor deny myself the partially vicarious pleasure. Cheers.
Awesome video man! I couldn’t help myself to mention ‘The White Stripes’ after you talked about how nirvana made a three piece sound so loud. You probably know them but they’re a duo from Detroit that make enough noise for 100 people (especially when live). Keep it up, I’m always coming back to your channel to see if you’ve made new content.
I think you should also react to the band The Pixies. The album Nevermind Kurt once said was only trying to do something close to what Kurt felt was a masterpiece Pixies album Surfer Rosa. They also were huge in the UK.
You absolutely need to listen and react to one of the best live performances of all time (personally I believe it to be the best) and that song is Where Did You Sleep Last Night!!!!! Also PennyRoyalTea from MTV’z unplugged! “I guarantee you I will screw thing song up” “Am I gonna do this by myself?” “Yea do it by yourself says Grohl and then Kurt promptly goes on to perform an iconic version of that song all by himself! I get goosebumps every time I listen to those 2 songs.
Honestly, something I don't think anyone said in any of your other early reactions is just how talented the whole Group is, Krist on bass and Pat Smear on rhythm guitar (I think). Pat before this gained a following in the punk band Germs which is a crazy ride if you're up for it, they lasted like 3 years before the singer overdosed on purpose after the band broke up. He was 20. Pat then followed Dave Grohl to Foo fighters and plays rhythm there.
Great vid man, I recommend doing dumb by nirvana think you're gonna have a lot of fun breaking that song down, the lyrics are kurts writing at its peak
You mentioned Kurt double-tracking his voice. It's actually more common than you'd think.. tons of songs are double tracked, it's just hard to notice unless you isolate it. The reason this probably caught your ear is because Kurt's vocals are double tracked and on top of that, the producer recorded Grohl singing harmonies and layered that on top of Kurt's thorough most of the the chorus ("HEEEESS THE ONE"). Another interesting note regarding that: Kurt Cobain hated the idea of double tracking his voice. There is a documentary about the making of Nevermind, and in the documentary the producer recalls that he had to force Kurt to let him do it. He actually got him to do it by telling Kurt that John Lennon's voice got double tracked, knowing that Cobain deeply admired Lennon. According to the producer, that is what convinced Kurt to change his mind and layer his voice
Nevermind is an album where you can review all the songs as if they were hit singles. I’d suggest doing them all now, plus the B-side Aneurysm. You should also check out Dive, the B-side to Sliver, as it was recorded with other Nevermind demos in 1990. Sliver is also good for contrast. Sliver and Dive show the bridge between Bleach and Nevermind.
Interesting fact for you, as you mentioned Dave Grohl's drums - on this track Nirvana's previous drummer Chad Channing actually came up with the drums on this track when the song was written and Dave Grohl continued to play the fills etc when he joined

Each one of them with an unique vibe and incredibly talented singers/musicians, worth checking out!
