Testing hot tub water is an important part of hot tub maintenance. Here are the steps to test your hot tub water:
1. Purchase a water testing kit that is specifically designed for hot tubs. You can find these at most pool and spa supply stores or online.
2. Follow the instructions on the testing kit to collect a water sample from your hot tub.
3. Test the water for pH, alkalinity, and sanitizer levels. These are the most important factors to monitor in hot tub water.
4. Adjust the water chemistry as needed based on the test results. If the pH or alkalinity is too high or too low, you can add chemicals to balance them out. If the sanitizer level is too low, you may need to add more sanitizer.
5. Retest the water after making any adjustments to ensure that the levels are within the recommended range.
It's important to test your hot tub water regularly, ideally once a week, to ensure that it is safe and comfortable to use.

This might be a dumb question, but please bare with me as I am 1000% BRAND NEW to maintaining a pool and hot tub. I have ZERO knowledge whatsoever other than I just know pools and hot tubs need chemicals.
However, is it okay to just use bromine only? I just set up our hot tub and have to maintain it this year because my Dad just can't do it anymore.
I just set it up yesterday and today. I filled it yesterday and turned it on to get warm. It was around 65° when it was completely filled it last night around 8:30-9:00 pm.
Today when I was able to finish cleaning the cover and inflatable thingy for the cover, the temperature was at 97°. I did drop 1 bromine tab into a float last night and today I just dropped another 1.5 tablets directly into the tub,(I was told to!! I didn't think it sounded right, either. Lol) Ran the bubbles for a few mins to get them spread out a little bit and that's all the chemicals that I have.
I know that bromine is a sanitizer, but is that all I really need?!? Or are the other chemicals 1000% necessary?
Yes. You can use bromine. Always keep the tabs in the floater. Don't just throw them into the tub. You use a bromine shock or a non chlorine shock after each use of the tub. You will need to also adjust the ph, alkanlity, and hardness.
@VIPPoolsandSpas Ahhh, okay. Well it's a little bit to late to put them in something, but I will remember not to do that next time. And okay, I believe I do have bromine shock in the shed. I'll have to look tomorrow and I'll let you know if you wouldn't mind explaining to use it..
So I was told by our hot tub place we bought from to not add shock (they had us buy a non chlorine shock) the same day as other chemicals that it eats those up is that true? Also on chlorine they are also called granules correct? How often should that be put in? Having trouble with hot tub having slimy yellow I assume biofilm? Just used ahhsome and drained and cleaned. Chemicals I have are granules, non chlorine shock, scale preventer, natural enzyme, biofilm weekly preventative, ph plus and minus. What should the schedule look like? I would greatly appreciate help.
As you can probable already see/read online that everyone says something different. It all depends on the hot tub, the chemicals you use, your maintenance plan and your test kit. There will also be difference if your on well water, town water or have a softener hooked up when you fill the hot tub. I use bromine on all the hot tubs, I only put floaters in the hot tubs I have issues with, use a Taylor Test Kit, and use Spa marvel. Also have a second filter. FIRST: Always fill your hot tub using a prefilter. SECOND: Shock with bromine shock (granules) after each use. THIRD: Use a Taylor Test Kit when testing. FOURTH: If you use a floater, take it out after you have reached the limit (3-5ppm) on your sanitation. Clean your filters weekly using the spa marvel kit. Test weekly on PH, Alka and sanitation. If you need to test every other day, do that. You have to find the chemicals right for you and your maintenance. If your new to this stay with one name brand of chems. If one of them doesnt seem to be working for you, try a different brand name.
@@VIPPoolsandSpas ok awesome so to clarify bromine granules would be the bottle they gave us that just says granules since it just says granules does that mean it is chlorine ones?
@@VIPPoolsandSpas also last clarification adding the bromine shock after each use they say you should leave the hot tub run open for 20-30 min is that correct or can get out toss it in and close the lid with pumps off? If I use the bromine shock is that the same as the non chlorine shock? So trying to make sure if I would continue trying to use the non chlorine shock or not? Thank you I appreciate all your help!
@@VIPPoolsandSpas we recently bought my dad a cat 12 Catalina hot tub I believe 325 gal or 425 gal
@@jessicadodson5998 You have to read the label. If it doesn't say bromine, its not bromine.
