  • Delta Air Lines is the only one of the big three US airlines not flying to Hong Kong. While United and American both operate multiple daily flights, Delta pulled out of the market in 2018. Here’s why.

    What's funny is that as soon as Delta quit the Seattle-HK route, Cathay Pacific started their own, and before the COVID pandemic, Cathay were doing quite good on the route.

      Cathay Pacific took over Seattle flight on that time, it's because of they want to cut the service in Vancouver and move some to Seattle with cheaper cost, unfortunately it was failed during the pandemic (right now Seattle remain suspension and Vancouver dropped only 2-3x weekly with 2 different flights)~~

      Cathay pulled out of Seattle and Washington-Dulles. I loved having Cathay at both of those airports. I hope now has travel levels increase again, we could see Cathay resume flights to these two airports, or maybe see Singapore Airlines take Cathay’s place at Dulles.

    I flew Delta from LAX to Hong Kong way back in the 1990’s. They had the MD-11 at that point, but the plane could not always make it non-stop so we refueled in Taiwan. Return trip was via Narita. Apparently MD performance was not as expected...

    Delta used to fly from Detroit to Hong Kong using a 777-200LR but dropped the service back in 2012 due to fluctuations in travel and high fuel prices. Used to be the 11th longest non-stop flight at 7,857 miles. Now if you want to get to HK from Detroit you'll have to connect through somewhere.

    I flew Delta between Seattle and Hong-Kong and it was just meh. They simply do not excel at customer service the way Cathay Pacific does. Further, the irony is they couldn't even keep the Seattle Osaka flight going very long. They have no connectability there and now it's just seasonal service. Not a good move on Delta's part.

    Delta also had nonstop service from Detroit to Hong Kong which I traveled many times on a 777 and those flights were very full. 15:30 flight time. But it was great getting there in one flight. DELTA never studies demographics. There is no huge Asian community in Seattle . Delta really dreamed that all the Asian passengers from west coast cities would be okay with taking a Delta connection flight to Seattle and go direct from there. I don't think DL have strong Business demand from HKG, nor good ongoing connections beyond HKG (which applied to most Skyteam carriers anyway). I remember they offered low fares quite frequently, maybe that's why they still have a decent load (but likely not profit).
      Meanwhile CX of course, have more contracts from local businesses, way better feed from other Asian destinations, and even at SEA end they have AS, which by no means inferior to DL's. Gone are the days where SEA is the cheapest direct US destination after CX takeover.

    ...Delta used to have service out of Portland to Tokyo Narita, Nagoya, and Seoul (the latter continuing to Tapei and Bangkok) first with L-1011-500s and later, MD-11s By 1998 they dropped the extension to Tapei and Bangkok but added a new route to Fukuoka bringing the total number of flights to 4 with plans to also serve Osaka. Due to the financial crisis of 1997 and Dot Com bust, Delta ceased serving Fukuoka and Seoul and the planned service to Osaka was dropped. With introduction of the 777 which could fly nonstop form Atlanta to Tokyo, there was little need for Portland gateway and mini hub and the city was became just another spoke in Delta's route system by spring of 2001.
    The only nonstop international overseas service that remained was a lone flight on Northwest to Amsterdam, and for a few years there was service to Frankfurt on Lufthansa (partially subsidised by the city and Adidas, who's North American headquarters is in Portland) using an A-340.
    After the merger with Northwest, Delta maintained the Amsterdam flight and a few years ago added nonstop summer service to London Heathrow with A-330s. However for the most part, Portland remains primarily a spoke city when it comes to domestic service when back in the 1990s it had a much larger market share with 20 gates. in 2019 Delta announced they wold serve the Portland Tokyo route again in spring of this year (Haneda airport) but flights never began due to the pandemic.
    The only current Asian service at this time are cargo flights, one operated by Cathay Pacific to Hong Kong and the other by Western Global to Tokyo Narita.

      Delta used to fly to DXB before Qatar and Emirates started dumping seats on the route. Overflight costs over Saudi airspace and prohibitions on US carriers overflying military airspace and Iranian airspace meant that Delta had few options to economize. Delta's JV partners fly to all major GCC cities from AMS and CDG, plus Asia connections via ICN, so customers can pay Delta to arrive and depart from almost any major GCC city.

      The reclaim of HK happened in 1997😂and after that, mainland Chinese travlers and immigrants from southern china rocked so high because we love to fly from HK, cheaper and better. The demand is huge enough for CX to maintain 2 daily shuttle flights between CAN and HKG, which is the shortest wide body route in the world. CX made huge profit from it and the connections from other mainland cities help to maintain its busy daily 77W flights to US. I think Delta provides better service than UA/AA, wish they would come back to HK❤

    Don't know if you guys noticed. Airlines from bigger countries tends to suck, while airlines from smaller countries excel in services.I think that's in part due to the demand in the domestic market where passengers in bigger countries has to rely on flying to get to places, whereas smaller countries relies on its airlines to bring in tourism and economy, thus heavily subsidizing its airlines.

    @Simple flying
    10years ago, Delta operated HKG-ORD with B777, but ended somewhere in 2012 I believe.
    Delta first launched the SEA-HKG route with B777 in 2013
    But shortly after that (as least since 2015), Delta downgraded from B777-200ER to A330-200 (Old Northwest airline aircraft)
    And this downgrade caused a major issue -- Payload
    Especially in summer time when jet stream above Japan area is weak (HKG-SEA)
    10% of flight had to offload all passenger baggage due to payload issue.
    It is even worst for SEA to HKG.
    Delta couldn't make good profit out of the route, and that was the primary reason of closing down it.
    Cathay operates the same route with A350 which can carry a much profitable payload after Delta quit

    • @billlmf
      @billlmf 3 роки тому

      Cathay took over SEA route from Delta, one of the reason is - They wanna cut YVR flights with the joint venture with Alaska to SEA as the replacement~~
      The other reason why Delta quit Hong Kong flight - Because of lack of suitable aircraft who based in Seattle, A332 were all from Detroit and B772 from Minneapolis, the only trans-continental aircraft who based in Seattle on that time was Boeing 767 (Those 767 have to share with Atlanta, Honolulu, New York and Tokyo)~~

    If you look at the political situation in HKG and see how a good amount of foreign companies have begun a exodus it gives Delta less of an excuse to fly to HKG most people from my opinion that fly Delta to Asia especially HKG would have been business folks most of the time.
    Anyways back in topic: HKG is a CX fortress meaning it’s a secured hub for OneWorld alliance, any OneWorld carrier such as AA flying to hkg can feed and connect people to other parts such as Philippines or mainland China ect. Delta doesn’t have that advantage due to no connection opportunities so people that fly there would terminate there so it’s not a high money maker. It’s easier for DL to just funnel folks to Incheon or Shanghai to have their partners such as Korean Air or China Eastern take care of flying people into HKG as those two stations are Skyteam Friendly/ Fortress. UA took a good number of slots too in HKG making it a pretty decent size station back then with their flights from HKG to US territories such as Guam or Saipan which further lessens the chances of growth for Delta to keep a plane flying there.
