At the turn of the 20th century, the young orphan Andreas Egger is sent to live with his ruthless uncle on a farm in a remote valley that he will leave only once in his life. This film tells the life story of Andreas over eight decades filled with poverty, war, and violence as well as moments of bliss and love that make him a humble man who ages happily with the little things life had to offer him. With his first and only love Marie always in his heart, Andreas accepts and cherishes the time he has left with serenity.
