You are a very knowledgeable man and have a very nice machine shop!! Also your wife does an excellent job filming all of your content, very professional and makes watching them very realistic. Greetings from Colorado, USA. I look forward to 12 midnight Thurday because Cutting Edge videos come out. I enjoy the show, but because of Kurtis, I cannot see a banana in a grocery store without thinking about Australia!

Your welding and machining knowledge is that of someone that has been doing both jobs for over 50 years. Amazing. Your clients are lucky to have your skillset.
Another great one. Karen, the Safety Officer, a weird chunk of steel, a brilliantly simplified explanation of what said chunk of steel is actually good for, flying swarf, welding, more flying swarf. And shiny fresh metal, of course. And outtakes. And so much more! Thanks a lot, CEE, this was fun!
Wanted so much to hear the tuning fork! it must be very rewarding to have other people appreciate all the videos you do. Good work as always Curtis, the "missus" and homey...
I'm totally amazed that the green packing strap had enough friction to drive the shaft like that. I kept expecting to see it stall as the cutting was going on. I had expected you to have to put a dog on the end to engage with the chuck. Bloody amazing. I think I've made this comment before but I'm very impressed with your welding. When you re-cut the bearing surfaces I didn't see even one tiny hole anywhere. That's almost as good as x-raying the weld to look for voids :).
That set of recently calibrated calibrator is right on the money. When in doubt, we use chewing gum, bailing wire, and pieces of straw. Great piece of work from you all !!! Thank you
I love the detailed information on welding metallurgy you provided in this video for this specific part. The discussion of hardenability, hydrogen cracking, pre/post weld heat treats etc was all really interesting to see it be applied in a real world scenario. I'd love to see more content where you get into the weeds on the metallurgy side.
I'm really impressed that the green strapping and the bit of friction the fixture provides is enough to drive the part. Entertaining and educational as always, well done curtis 👏
Yeah, I was expecting him to install as many as can physically fit on the yoke, like a dozen or so. That strap machine puts a lot more tension than I though.
Adds new meaning to sand bagging the part. Worked with a real old guy years ago and some jobs he sand bagged when using a mill.He had about a half dozen bags laying around all the time. 😂I like those ceramic inserts also, use a lot of the ceramic inserts in my work.
Ive been a tire fitter ,40 years and most of that time Ive been around heavy earth moving equipment , Im no engineer though your vids are educating me . Thanks for going through and explaining why your are doing ...what you do !
And another work of art leaves the workshop. As others have mentioned, who would have thought packing strap could be used as a drive dog. Very lateral approach and one worth storing away for an option. Doubles as a tuning fork muffler. Great stuff. Thanks as always team for bringing us along for the ride. Cheers Pete'.
Your problem solving ability is amazing. I am so glad that your subscriber numbers keep going up as your content is always interesting and the videos are edited so well. Thanks!
Love that new turn-table and KUDOS for being able to sit still and accurately place your beads for the period of time it took to weld the part out. Anybody that hasn’t done it couldn’t possibly relate to how much pain you can be in trying to sit still and concentrate for that long.
They should've had their "time lapse clock" in the background for that job! My arm was getting tired resting on the keyboard for the time it took to fast forward through those welds.
Kurtis braced himself for the smaller weld with the pallet on the forks and I kept thinking he must be braced (for the lower weld) and we just can’t see it. Gotta be comfortable if at all possible.
Those Banana Callipers are fantastic they made me laugh so much 😂😂😂 Awesome video again guys great content and an interesting part to repair. I personally can’t believe how much welding has changed since I learned to Arc weld many years ago and never even saw a Mig welder until the middle of the 1980s. Homeless is a gorgeous Staffie and he reminds me of my 2 especially having to be first in and out of the car. Keep up the great work and looking forward to the next video.
I used to work with a larger version of a positioning table. It comes in real handy when welding Sub Arc when you need positioned welds. Because I worked 4/10's this week I get a four day weekend. Time to make good use of it!
After subscribing for many videos I'm so glad you've kept your format of starting with Safety Officer, clear explanation of the part to be repaired, and excellent video recording throughout. If it was here in the US you'd be Top Bananas! Well done, many thanks.
🤣 the banana calipers. Well done! Karen does a great job on the videos too. Just the right mix of 1x and time lapse. All the retakes explaining things are totally worth it too, the videos are really great to watch!
We use a bicycle tire tube to reduce ringing. Just wrap it around. Loved how your strapping doubled as a drive dog. Once again great skills and knowledge. Nice repair. Great video.
Awesome relationship between videographer/actor and/or husband/wife. Of the 40 min edited episode, errors or differing opinions do occur. Out takes truly make me laugh for a Friday evening NZ time. Keep up the good work team.
Interesting to see one of these that's actually worn rather than failed. I fix a lot of these for D6Rs. Typically the front bushing wears faster than the rear, and that allows the rear to be held captive while the front half moves slightly. Over time they snap in half on the front edge of the groove for the horseshoe key. Considering what they cost, the contractors are very happy to be able to get the back end replaced rather than buying a new part.
how much do they cost new? These videos always seem like so much work goes into fixing such huge parts that the repair cost would be huge. I can't imagine what the cost is new if they are willing to pay for it though.
@@pudo3792 I think it is more of an issue of availability. The transmission housing that was spray welded in another video just was not available anywhere and had to be produced. I suspect that is the same for this fork as well.
@@stunmunky2 these yokes are readily available but they are ridiculously priced. For a D6R this part from caterpillar (here in Canada) last I heard was $10,400. For a 9R or 9T I'd expect it to be in the neighborhood of $15k. My shop rebuilds them for around $2000 for comparison sake
@@shakeydavesr I finish the bearing journals out a bit differently, but yes. At least in my experience even if they are in perfect shape it's just not possible to weld everything back together accurately enough for it to actually fit. No matter how careful you are, it always pulls when welding. And there is only a couple thou of clearance in these fits
Your videos have taught me enough to change the eyes on my (very small) hydraulic rams. All the way from creating the centering nubs on the shafts to how much to chamfer for welding for maximum penetration!

Ah...the two things that go together are Mother's Milk and cold hard steel! All the best...enjoy the videos sooo much. It's 2 am here in Atlanta, Georgia when the videos hit UA-cam!
I am watching this at 1:34am Saturday morning here in Sydney AU. But I am running late on my CEE fix, they published this 14 hours ago (about lunchtime Friday).
Pretty awesome repair. I am amazed how steady your hands were when welding on the new material. Expected some kind of holder for the welding head, but was surprised you did it by hand. Welds turned out great and pretty damn uniform for doing it by hand. Anyway, Thanks for another great video.
Kurtis, Rance here. I see how you attached the lathe to the yoke...accomplished two things at one go. Using the plastic shipping straps you kept the ear piercing noise down by keeping the yoke from vibrating and acting as a tuning fork & at same time secured yoke via friction fit. Brilliant ! There is genius in simplicity! Job wrll done!
This is one of the reasons I like this channel is that he explains (most of the time) what the part is and where it goes, so he gives context to what and why he is doing what he does and for me I tend to get more engaged in the video to see his solution rather than “hey I’m welding a crack look at me weld”!
Yep, agreed. That aspect is really getting better all the time! Nothing better than knowing the context of the part and repair, including why it failed and the potential issues about various repair strategies.
Great video 👍 I know some of the stuff you do must feel pretty standard to you but to us mortals it’s super interesting and I thank you for taking the time to share and explain 👌👍
I can’t wait to see what oddity comes to your shop the best thing is you tell us what and where the piece is used. I enjoy watching a master at work. Keep it up.
Thank you team CEE, great work as always. Superb descriptions/explanations on what is going on, as such your videos would make for exceptional education material. Bonzer viewing.
The new positioned is a great addition to your shop. I am always impressed by your attitude expressed at the start of each job, also how well the shop is kept clutter free and equipment kept in working order. The film shots , sound, and editing are also great. Take care of your camera'man' / producer. Makes for a good channel to recommend.

Absolutely awesome. You are an incredibly talented welder Kurtis. All joking aside your work methods and results are pretty incredible. And you make awesome videos with Karen. 🥰😍❤️
When I was in school for auto mechanics we had a brake lathe used to turn down rotors and drums and a leather strap to wrap around whatever to stop the god awful ringing

As usual: totally fascinating. I love the new rotator, but while watching you weld using it I wondered if you could not combine your Sir Mechanica line boring/welder with this rotator and automate these sorts of jobs in some way. Bending over like that has got to be hell on your back after a while.
Great Video Homeless and thanks for letting Curtis play with your Toys because after all he does do a great job when a severe case of gravity happens he still gets it done in a very educational and entertaining way. Enjoyed thanks for sharing
Me when I started watching CEE: "What is that? Why are you doing this? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?" Me after 2 years: "Yes, this could be done on the Mill, but since it's already setup on the lathe, it's more efficient. That's a big piece to Weld, will definitely need to pre-heat it to get the bead to stick. I see the problem, the maintenance wasn't done or was done by numptys"
@@ctdieselnut UA-cam, well the educational video parts are a great way to show working techniques and points of note for the many trades. In effect it can be like being coached by a top tradesperson, but with the advantage of being able to rewatch key points as they are being learnt.
Curtis, Im really interested in how you learnt your skills and how long it's taken for you to get so good at what you do. I'm actually jealous of your skill and your job, if I was 15 years younger I'd be chasing this kinda job but it's too later now and I regret some of my earlier years so much, they held me back. Hi Kurtis and Karen, That was an ingenious way to mount the yoke using the strapping material, Kurtis. Like the calibrated banana calipers. 🙂Hey Karen, that T-Shirt said it all. Was that pineapple toy for Homey pineapple flavored? Both of you stay safe.
Another 30 minutes of bliss, watching a good engineer plying his trade. Must say I used to dislike, hate is a strong word, machining rusty parts as the rust dust gets everywhere. The new welding positioning table looks a real nice bit of kit. Great post and a job very well done.
I'm loving this channel more and more! The descriptions and explanations that go along with the jobs are very educational, and the interludes with Homie are so cute! When UA-cam first began to suggest CEE to me, I though that I didn't need another machining channel. I couldn't have been more wrong! Mrs. Cutting Edge sounds lovely - are we ever going to see her, and what's her name?

I grew up in a shop that did the same type of repairs to machine components. I am glad to see that you machine the old surface to a good clean-up before bed-up. And I believe that your preheat is very important to the outcome. How was it heat treated? Thanks for showing the world how expensive an difficult to obtain parts can be repaired and in some cases made better than new.

Another CEE professionally reconditioned heavy equipment part ready to go back to work. Always an enjoyable watch, you guys are the best and how all of my Fridays begin! 👍👍👍
I really enjoy when you discuss the theory - why some types of rod are used, etc. Your experience is clearly deep and wide!
You do very good work. Love watching your show. The endings of the mis takes are wonderful. You're wife's laughing is PRICELESS and Homeless is a mess.
I don't know why but I like to watch that kind of stuff. I work in a restaurant but I like to see professional repairs.
Greetings from Poland
Love the cushion drive between centres, brilliant set up, fair depth on original induction hardening
Great machining and camera work both 👏 👌.
Thanks for sharing
You prove that a machinist is master of many disciplines, but is also a artist at a shaping material to exacting tolerances.
Ah...the two things that go together are Mother's Milk and cold hard steel!
All the best...enjoy the videos sooo much.
It's 2 am here in Atlanta, Georgia when the videos hit UA-cam!
Woah that's a crazy time to be watching!
1am in good ol Oklahoma! 🤣
I am watching this at 1:34am Saturday morning here in Sydney AU. But I am running late on my CEE fix, they published this 14 hours ago (about lunchtime Friday).
Top shelf stuff! This is more educational then a month in school.
Pretty awesome repair. I am amazed how steady your hands were when welding on the new material. Expected some kind of holder for the welding head, but was surprised you did it by hand. Welds turned out great and pretty damn uniform for doing it by hand. Anyway, Thanks for another great video.
I'll second that. VERY steady hand! Nice video, Kurtis! And yes, bananas can take a lifetime to master!
Отличный материал. Как всегда, спасибо команде за то, что взяли нас с собой в поездку.
Very true! Good to know you enjoyed it
Hi, Kurtis. I liked the centering tool you made and the damper for the harmonics. Thanks for sharing! Stay Healthy!
hey mate glad you liked that!
You three are an incredible team! I love watching such talented folks in action, before and behind the camera. Cheers!
Curt, The "Banana micrometer", you made me laugh so hard I blew my coffee through my nose. That doesn't happen very often. Nice job.from the U.S.
Thank you very much!
Great job guys !! A massive tuning fork is right !! This saved your customer a truck load of money not having to buy a new one of these !! Top notch work as always you guys are wonderful !! I love the out takes at the end !! 👍👍
I've only participated in one midlife overhaul. It was Not fun.
The "Calibrated Calipers" had rolling. Definitely hilarious.
Love the new welding positioner!
I'm sure it'll make your life easier. You need more of that.
I can not belive it! The pallet is actually in one piece!
Great video ( as always ) :D Have a good weekend!
the customer splurged 😂👍
Ready? ...................................................................Yeeeeeeeeeeeesssssssssssssssssssss.... Love these two...They almost give Homeless a run for video STAR status.... I would swear it was my wife and I, along with our 80lb/36.29kg Lab... Thanks as always for good content with a side of personality..
Absolutely awesome. You are an incredibly talented welder Kurtis. All joking aside your work methods and results are pretty incredible. And you make awesome videos with Karen. 🥰😍❤️
So happy for your successful business brother. Your videos helped get me through my long painful days of Leukemia. Godbless your family and channel.
When I was in school for auto mechanics we had a brake lathe used to turn down rotors and drums and a leather strap to wrap around whatever to stop the god awful ringing
I always like seeing a weld build up being turned into a machine surface, cheers mates!
I kind of want to hear what it sounds like without out the strapping. Awesome job you three.
“because this is a one off part and I’ll never do one again”….gets flooded with D9 yoke rehab orders 🤣🤣🤣🤣
Seriously... Nobody competes with you and your wife and dog. I love the humor and everything. Thanks for the amazing content!!
Piękna robota. Wesołe ludzie jesteście, zdrowia.😊
Tak, to bardzo weseli ludzie. I zdolni.
👋 Carl welding free hand looks easy when u do it, I have to say at my age my Back got stiff just watching u weld in that position for the amount of time it took. Awesome job you guys rock 🎸
Fantastic video, thanks Karren.
The work looked good.
Thanks again!
My pleasure 😊
you make everything
look so easy. having the rite tool makes a diferance
Mate great job, you make it look easy! Not many people can fix the things you do!
14:55 I’m so glad you explained this in detail. I was very curious about this when the material was being removed earlier on.
Phantastic work!
Offtopic: There is only one thing banana in Australia - you're driving on the wrong side. :)
That's what you think! Ever consider that you might be the bananas driving on the wrong side of the road?
@@markfryer9880 Today, right-hand traffic predominates worldwide. Of the 221 states and territories in the world, 59 currently have left-hand traffic, mainly in former British colonies and dominions with a population of around 2.34 billion.
So 😛
Kurtis you should do a behind the scenes and talk about your career being a machinist, how you got started, favorite machine/type of work, etc. Your knowledge never ceases to amaze me! There are my machinists on UA-cam and you're one of the best I watch!
As usual: totally fascinating. I love the new rotator, but while watching you weld using it I wondered if you could not combine your Sir Mechanica line boring/welder with this rotator and automate these sorts of jobs in some way. Bending over like that has got to be hell on your back after a while.
Yup, he will regret it in his older years !! My body is worn out from 40 years of welding !!
Being from the USA I loved the banana calipers. Here I was expecting something totally different. Love the videos keep them coming.
Ripping some serious chips :) Quality job- happy customer.
Thanks Lars! Glad you are enjoying the vids
Homey is one committed safety officer and clearly can't wait to get to work every day, making sure Curtis doesn't screw up.
Sorry to hear about the equipment loss but the new one looks to be a nice upgrade. When you calibrate the yellow caliper do they use "Fruit Loops"?
ahhahahahaha
Kurtis you lucky man. Giggles and wiggles have trained you well. That pup is so cute.
Vc é um profissional muito competente gosto de seus vídeos...
It's about time you got some proper measuring equipment in that shop!
Would be kinda interesting to see how they harden it.
Electric induction hardening would be my guess!
Basically like this, ua-cam.com/video/a6YpJXoADCA/v-deo.html
Actually this one was more informative ua-cam.com/video/wOv3i0eoo0Q/v-deo.html
Great Video Homeless and thanks for letting Curtis play with your Toys because after all he does do a great job when a severe case of gravity happens he still gets it done in a very educational and entertaining way. Enjoyed thanks for sharing
Me when I started watching CEE: "What is that? Why are you doing this? WHAT THE HELL IS GOING ON?!?"
Me after 2 years: "Yes, this could be done on the Mill, but since it's already setup on the lathe, it's more efficient. That's a big piece to Weld, will definitely need to pre-heat it to get the bead to stick. I see the problem, the maintenance wasn't done or was done by numptys"
😂👌 Spot on mate!
Im the same mate, ok thats gonna need a 12mm button bit on there, good to know Im still learning things lol
Its amazing what you can learn from UA-cam.
@@ctdieselnut UA-cam, well the educational video parts are a great way to show working techniques and points of note for the many trades. In effect it can be like being coached by a top tradesperson, but with the advantage of being able to rewatch key points as they are being learnt.
I'm stuck in bed with a stomach bug but binging your videos is making me feel a little better. Thanks!
Awesome video as always.
hey mate I share a bit about that in our Q&A video if you want to check it out cheers
Will definitely check that out, thankyou. By the way I love your dog, never fails to make me smile 😁
I'm amazed at the amount of machining big earth moving equipment needs to stay operational!
Hi Kurtis and Karen,
That was an ingenious way to mount the yoke using the strapping material, Kurtis.
Mrs. Cutting Edge sounds lovely - are we ever going to see her, and what's her name?
hey mate welcome to the channel always good to know the videos are being enjoyed. The giggler made an appearance in our Q&A video but she prefers to stay behind the camera
Always a treat! Love the new positioner, looks like top quality. My back always aches to see Kurtis working so close to the floor!
Excellent video - I think I'm in need of a "mid-life" myself - my bearings are deffo worn! Great breakfast viewing from here in the UK!
😂😂😂 time for a Harley?
@@CuttingEdgeEngineering Not as expensive as a new wife, the disposal costs of the current Mrs R would prove prohibitive! 😂😂😂
Trip to Thailand is the best for grease & oil change. Sorry forgot it a family show.
I'm always amazed by your welding skills. Real time how long did that take to weld? Love the channel and content. Hope You, The Giggler, and Homey have a great day. 🙂❤️💯
