Here’s me ranting about Call Me Your Name: It’s a masterpiece. From someone watching the first time, it’s relatable, beautiful, and heartbreaking. If you pull back a layer, you notice all the perfect things that make it such an amazing film. The dreamy color scheme makes it feel like a memory (which is how the novel is told) and the pure seduction and desire in the atmosphere when Oliver and elio are together really set the scene. You don’t have to be gay to know how the two feel or to know how that first true heartbreak feels. It could be two men, two women, etc. and it still be the same movie about experimentation and unclaimed desire. When the two ‘start’ their fling, there’s this race to the deadline that makes the movie feel faster than before where it was slow paced and really tip toed around the situation. And, Armie Hammer’s Oliver was absolutely beautiful. He looked at Timothee with true passion in the scenes where Oliver stared at Elio while he slept which made it feel like we weren’t watching a movie, but seeing someone else’s life unfold on a screen. Also, the infamous peach scene was perfectly shaped to elio’s situation. I feel like it could be him trying to find an outlet for when Oliver leaves but could also be a metaphor that love and passion can be expressed through so many different ways. It could also reiterate elio’s lack of experience and trying to relive himself in any ways he can. Oliver trying to eat the peach shows him accepting all of elio’s quirks and his inexperience. In conclusion, this movie is an absolute masterpiece and I can’t wait for the sequel in 2020. edit: hey it’s a year since i’ve wrote this and JESUS CHRIST i’m sorry if you read this and the 2nd movie is either not happening or is coming out in a WHILE while. sorry to get anyone’s hopes up lmao

Yeah I totally agree. I really didn't like Alex Strangelove. I hated how his girlfriend was just like, "Okay my boyfriends gay and that's okay with me. So much that I'm gonna hook him up." It completely ignored her and it was just another shitty Netflix movie.

Yes, I see Elio, I instantly click!😍 "Love Simon" and "Booksmart" were fantastic movies with gay protagonists, especially with Amy's conflict not being related to her sexuality, but rather on her shyness, and wanting to be independent from her best friend Molly. 🌈
"Booksmart" had a little too much clever, pretentious dialogue for me. I could see the writers writing it when watching it, more than these one-liners realistically snapping out of two teenagers' mouths constantly.
Unpopular opinion: (MY OPINION) Moonlight deserves way more recognition or as much recognition as Call Me By Your Name. We all know why Moonlight doesn’t have as much recognition and comments about the movie. It won oscars and was an amazing story. But you know..
Oh, we know why. It's funny when Moonlight tops LGBTQ+ film lists, many commenters will quickly dismiss it and shout Love, Simon or CMBYN. I wonder why...
I loved moonlight but I didn't really like the layout of it? that's the only reason I like others more. if it was formatted more like call me by your name, etc it would def be my top. but 100% it deserves more recognition.
I agree with you except for one thing : Call me by your name was a boring pretentious uninspired movie and deserved way less recognition than Moonlight.
Yes. It's the ANTI-Call Me By Your Name, and it's a compliment as I think CMBYN is trash (especially knowing that the actors signed for a scrip that had very specific intimacy scenes and THEN refused to shoot them because they didn't want anyone think they were ACTUALLY gay (WTF!!!), forcing the writers to rewrite thoses scenes overnight)
Don't forget about boring. Snooze fest! Want a skipping heart one? Try "The Way He Looks", now that's romantic. "God's Own Country" has a shitty romance with a shitty main character.
chobopanda Well it technically was a coming of age film. Both of the characters were young. I believe that the younger one was just fresh out of high school (he wanted to further his education at an art school). They were both discovering themselves and engaged in a relationship that was new and surprising for both of them.
I like how in Shelter, being gay wasn't the central conflict but a seemless part of the story. It was a lot bigger than just that and I like how they played it
I say two of the best movies to watch is “call me by your name” it’s a really strong movie with a realistic ending. Opens up the mind of a 17 year old still finding who he is and moving on. I also enjoyed “love Simon” it’s really nice movie and talks abt the struggles of coming out.
I admittedly love both _Call Me By Your Name,_ and _Love, Simon._ Timothée Chalamet, Nick Robinson, and Keiynan Lonsdale are all three simply adorable, and very fine young actors.
@@RavenStorm332 Nah. It deals with JGL's character dealing with being gay in a small town and being a gay hustler in NYC. It deals both with the child abuse issue and the coming of age issue.
“Get Real” and “But I’m A Cheerleader” are so underrated and soooooo much better than most of the movies on that list, they deserve to be more than just a honorable mention. C’mon who would prefer “Love, Simon” over this movies ?!!!
"The Way He Looks", "Hidden Kisses", "North Sea Texas" and "Jongens (Boys)" say hello! Not even an honorable mention??? Somebody didn't do a proper research 😤
Likewise, I've seen all three, and I've adored them all. I'd definitely recommend checking out "Moonlight", even though it's grittier and darker, it's still a very well made film that is worthy of its "Best Picture" title. 🏆
I watched Call Me By Your Name yesterday, on a leap year, and I am still obsessed with it. Urrgghhh! The best movie for me so far. I love Armie and Timothy's nonchalant chemistry.
Boy Erased was a very very good movie, but it omitted large plot points from the book (main character going to the prison to hand out church pamphlets is one I can think of) and added stuff that I don't even remember happening in the book (like the guy killing himself) A good movie, but rather different than the source material. Sorry for kinda going off, but I just thought I should add that for people thinking about watching the movie. Go read the book too, it's a really important true story about conversion therapy
Boy Erased was a great movie but hid away a lot of the brutal truths of these conversion camps and what they really do to kids. These places have come up with all kinds of torture methods that are deemed cruel and sinister and this movie brushed right over it kind of taking out the severity of the issue. Of course not every camp is that brutal but it still happens and not many people are aware of it unfortunately.

'Coming of Age Movies' you say? Randomly watching 'Beautiful Thing' on Showtime (TV), is honestly the best thing that could've happened to me as a gay teen. It was extremely relatable and almost all of its characters went through the same stages I and everyone associated with me went through back then. It was heavy, romantic, uplifting and at times felt hopeless, but it never resorted to suicide, gay stereotyping, (relentless) homophobia and all the other tropes of most gay-themed movies. But what made it truly unique is that it also manages to end in a way that every teen, gay or straight, could hope for. It was perfect and ever since then I got to feel normal for the rest of my life. Love, Simon feels incredibly forced by comparison.
I really love the Mom scene in Love by Simon, that’s everything i ever wanted to hear coming from my own parents. I didn’t get that, but when they portrayed that scene, i cried like mad cos it’s just surreal
"The Way He Looks" is my favourite LGBT+ movie of all time so far, the story is simple yet so positive and even though it doesn't make me cry like some of these others I prefer it. Other honourable mentions which I haven't seen listed below are "Esteros" "Trick" and "Holding The Man"
Dana Terrell it shouldn’t be forgotten like it is. It was one of the first gay coming out films. A classic that leaves you smiling for days after watching it.
Call me by your name is not just my favourite gay movie, it’s the best movie I have ever watched in my life. I felt every emotion the characters felt, especially Elio. Happiness, desire, Longing, love, the excitement of falling in love with someone and wanting to be with them so much that it hurts, the heartbreak, the sadness that followed, just everything Elio felt. It was really amazing to watch for me. Their chemistry was amazing. No movie has ever made me feel like that before, ever!
My favorites: - Booksmart - My Own Private Idaho - Blue is the warmest color - God's Own Country 🌟 love this one - Love Simon 🌟 - Call me by your name 🌟 - G.B.F - MOONLIGHT 🌟 * What happened to The Way He Looks it was BEAUTIFUL
Yessss Love Simon is on this list! Love Simon is my favourite movie of all time... it’s so well done, and after reading the book, I just have even more of an appreciation for it.
I think trans-centered films deserve their own list, so many great movies out there and while it is under the lgbt umbrella, it has its own struggles and experiences that these films help bring to light in a different way
I personally feel that movies like Latter Days, Shelter, and Monster Pie should have all made this list instead of some of these. I highly recommend them as they are true to the core and full of raw emotion.
Beautiful Thing is one of the greatest gay coming of age movies ever. In a time gay stories were still all tragic it showed an amazing love story. Where is that on this list.
I definitely would've had The Way He Looks/Hoje Eu Quero Voltar Sozinho on this list. And I would've thrown in cult classic D.E.B.S. as an honorable mention at the very least.
Moonlight changed me. I cried watching Call me by Your name after reading the book. When I saw Moonlight it was a different kind of cry. 1 and 2 should be tied I think! Such amazing movies!
@@cahidijoyoraharjo7833 Holding the man: good god, that was brutal. Great movie you have to pay attention to the first time you watch it cause the human emotional psyche cant handle a second time
i was watching call me by your name for the first time maybe in May or so, and i am still as obsessed as i was after i saw it in May.. it is a really beautiful story
I am a girl and straight and I love BL stories but tbh Boys Don’t Cry made me cry and it broke my heart in the end 💔 Hilary Swank such an amazing actress
My favourites: 1 - brokeback mountain. 2 - free fall. 3 - out in the dark. 4 - call me by your name. 5 - holding the man. 6 - shelter. 7 - god's own country. 8 - Danish girl. 9 - prayers for Bobby. 10- milk.
How did “The Way He Looks” not make the list. It’s the most positive portrayal of young gay love there is.

Dennis Q. Ly yup we know
I loved moonlight but I didn't really like the layout of it? that's the only reason I like others more. if it was formatted more like call me by your name, etc it would def be my top. but 100% it deserves more recognition.
I agree with you except for one thing : Call me by your name was a boring pretentious uninspired movie and deserved way less recognition than Moonlight.
Love Simon is trash. Moonlight is pretty darn good and I think Call Me By Your Name is my favorite probably cuz I read the book.
God's Own Country, easily one of the most beautiful movies of all time
yes
Lies. It was so boring. I dreaded watching that.
@@angelojermainex you have a bad taste then
super agree, the acting was amazing, I felt both of the characters
My heart legit skipped when I saw God's Own Country here. So underrated and sooo beautiful. ❤️
Don't forget about boring. Snooze fest! Want a skipping heart one? Try "The Way He Looks", now that's romantic. "God's Own Country" has a shitty romance with a shitty main character.
Same here! I love God's Own Country! ❤
Liked it but don't really think of it as a coming of age film.
Jennifer Garner's monologue in Love Simon gives me chills everytime I watch it. I cry ever single time
“shelter” was always one of my favorites
Marcelino Rosas I love “Shelter.” It was one of the first gay films I watched and still one of my favorites.
chobopanda Well it technically was a coming of age film. Both of the characters were young. I believe that the younger one was just fresh out of high school (he wanted to further his education at an art school). They were both discovering themselves and engaged in a relationship that was new and surprising for both of them.
This! I don't know why it so underrated.
I like how in Shelter, being gay wasn't the central conflict but a seemless part of the story. It was a lot bigger than just that and I like how they played it
Forever my favorite LGBT+ and just coming of age movie in general.
“I remember everything” broke my heart
I say two of the best movies to watch is “call me by your name” it’s a really strong movie with a realistic ending. Opens up the mind of a 17 year old still finding who he is and moving on. I also enjoyed “love Simon” it’s really nice movie and talks abt the struggles of coming out.
Cousin, too 😅
I admittedly love both _Call Me By Your Name,_ and _Love, Simon._ Timothée Chalamet, Nick Robinson, and Keiynan Lonsdale are all three simply adorable, and very fine young actors.
Mysterious Skin getting the credit it deserves, such an amazing film
Tom Stanbury I loved that movie back in high school
though the movie was really about dealing with child sexual abuse from the victim's prospective than it was about any LGBTQ+ issues
@@RavenStorm332 Nah. It deals with JGL's character dealing with being gay in a small town and being a gay hustler in NYC. It deals both with the child abuse issue and the coming of age issue.
I love this movie and love the book even more so
the book is sooo good
YOOO “ The way he looks” SHOULD HAVE BEEN IN THE TOP 3!!!!!
One of the best LGBT movies out there.
“Get Real” and “But I’m A Cheerleader” are so underrated and soooooo much better than most of the movies on that list, they deserve to be more than just a honorable mention. C’mon who would prefer “Love, Simon” over this movies ?!!!
Me
Sirus Fan have you ever watched “Get Real” or “But I’m A Cheerleader” before ?
Get Real is great; I love his friend Linda.
Nic G me too ! She’s everything
@@pedrofelipepamplona1944 And "But I'm a Cheerleader" is great, too! I love the Chick Habit song by April March.
"The Way He Looks", "Hidden Kisses", "North Sea Texas" and "Jongens (Boys)" say hello! Not even an honorable mention??? Somebody didn't do a proper research 😤
Pim from North Sea Texas is actually dating a guy now. They are so sweet.
Jason Casas omg yass!!! Do you know their social media? I want to follow him 😭❤️
@@davidtorres1114 i only know Pim's ig it's jelleflorizoone
@@jijijasie seriously?ill alredy watch that..
Jason Casas Thank you!
Moonlight & God's Own Country are masterpieces!
I cant stop watching those two movies especially for me Moonlight is part of me
absolutely.
The Miseducation of Cameron Post should've been on this list.
yess I LOVED that movie
Oh hell yeah, love that film soooo much
People aren't talking about 'gods own country' enough. It has amazing cinematography, insane symbolism in many of the scenes & it doesn't end sad!!!
The movie “The Way He Looks” deserves a place in this countdown. Even watching it just using subtitles and I loved it.
I loved Love, Simon and Call me by your name. Haven't watched Moonlight yet actually.
Yeah, me too
Likewise, I've seen all three, and I've adored them all. I'd definitely recommend checking out "Moonlight", even though it's grittier and darker, it's still a very well made film that is worthy of its "Best Picture" title. 🏆
Same also only seen both
Moonlight is wonderful but very depressing. Similar to My Own Private Idaho
Moonlight is good but a bit boring for gay themed movie
The fact that “Shelter” is nowhere to be found negates this entire list. Seriously, it doesn’t even get an honorable mention?????
I said the exact same thing
There is something about Shelter that gives me peace. In a way any other film I've watched.
is it a coming of age movie? i don't think so but yes very nice movie.
That MC kinda looked like Shia Lebo...however it's spelled.
I watched Call Me By Your Name yesterday, on a leap year, and I am still obsessed with it. Urrgghhh! The best movie for me so far. I love Armie and Timothy's nonchalant chemistry.
My favorites were Definitely “Love, Simon” and “Call Me By Your Name” 🥺😊
I just watched "Call Me by Your Name" and I can't stop crying. I just can't.
The ending of call me by your name had me crying for an hour
Upset to not see Boy Erased on this list. Personally it would be my number 1
Boy Erased was a very very good movie, but it omitted large plot points from the book (main character going to the prison to hand out church pamphlets is one I can think of) and added stuff that I don't even remember happening in the book (like the guy killing himself)
A good movie, but rather different than the source material.
Sorry for kinda going off, but I just thought I should add that for people thinking about watching the movie.
Go read the book too, it's a really important true story about conversion therapy
What a seriuos movie. Love kidman in there
@@coryb3 I've read the book. I bought it a while before the movie came out
the miseducation of cameron post > boy erased
Boy Erased was a great movie but hid away a lot of the brutal truths of these conversion camps and what they really do to kids. These places have come up with all kinds of torture methods that are deemed cruel and sinister and this movie brushed right over it kind of taking out the severity of the issue. Of course not every camp is that brutal but it still happens and not many people are aware of it unfortunately.

I’m glad to see Mysterious Skin on here. It doesn’t get the recognition it deserves.
Ironically, after watching “Boys Don’t Cry” I cried for several days
I would definitely add Holding The Man to this list. It's such a sad film but its so packed with emotions and depth.
Actually it's the BEST. It's underrated
omg yess its such a good movie 🥰😭
That is one of my favorite LBGTQ movies, it's very good and has great storytelling. It would have gotten more recognition if it was made in the USA
actually it was a upbeat movie till the end... I literally sat through the credits asking my dog what just happened
I absolutely agree with you! The same for me, in fact I watched it with my mum, and it made stuff a whole lot easier!
May i add and recommend Beautiful Thing.
Absolutely! So surprised it wasn't even mentioned.

The scene with the mom in Love, Simon always gets me. The writing and the acting was raw and perfect. Not too shallow nor too exaggerated.
