That water level monitoring is KEY.. rivers are all I have to hunt off of here, and the levels fluctuate daily, I preach that to everyone just bc a spot was knee deep last time you hunted doesn’t mean it is today or the next time you go!

Good stuff, rivers offer some of the best hunting there is in my opinion. When its on, its usually on

Excellent video and tips. I especially liked the point about spinners in the river. I will NEVER use one in a field when goose hunting. But it sounds like that may be unique to fields.

Here is another tip. When you have a lot of birds in two different bunches that are one mile apart you can setup between them and pick off stragglers trading back and forth!

Agreed, ive seen that several times. With ice getting between them can be very difficult but is ideal if you can pull it off.

I hunt rivers and they only really fluctuate 6 inches, no dams to change the level. The only time it would change is a lot of rain then the sands might shift and get shallower or deeper. The disadvantage of rivers here is that they are clear and the birds can see the bottom and your cords a lot easier. Monofilament is a better choice. And i paint my weights black or brown. New weights have way to much shine. But good content Elliot.

The area I hunt fluctuates way more than 6 inches. It can fluctuate several feet from lake discharge. It’s typically only for a short time but it happens.

@@FreelanceDuckHunting that is truely a disaster waiting to happen if you don't pay attention, and one must value there life and pay attention or God will reap their sole.

Been doing this waterfowl madness over a decade, never had any luck with spinners unless they were teal. I hunt the North Platte river 98% of the time

We have a dam that manages water levels, so the water levels can change wildly within an hour

Nice to see that you not 20 something. I am an older waterfowler and really like your videos.

What do you consider a “small” spread, and what makes a “large” spread? Asking mostly for ducks.

Rivers with ice is a very special enviornment but you must have extreme caution.

Trail and error is the biggest thing. And don't piss off the locals that have been hunting that area most of their life

As long as the locals don’t think they own the river it will not be an issue

I have had more problems with the non locals thinking they own the river and try to run off the locals

There’s an app called Riverapp that us whitewater kayakers use to check all the river levels, has most rivers if there is a water shed on it, easy to set up favourites and alarms for certain levels, I feel it could be handy for you.
