Alistair, you are my absolute hero, I've used this for a bookcase this morning and in ten mins I know exactly how many sheets I need. if only i could get more fitted furniture work but I'm very poor at self promotion.
These videos I watch once but you really need to watch 2 or 3 times to get all the information. So amazing that this knowledge has been shared! Thank you Alistair. I manually input in to Maxcut. Good program but it just adds another process. I'm gonna try this one next.
Nic Harvey yeah this could be a game changer . A lot of this sort of stuff though, it works best when you take the time to set up the process. The reality for many of us is we carry on with the manual entry processes because we never quite get around to setting up a better system fully. Also often the better system turns out to be a bit limited or rigid.
That plugin looks ace - I've previously done it all manually as per the first part of the demo, but colouring all of the parts distinctly. It's a pain to rotate them all and then try and figure out the optimal layout on the sheet. This plugin looks like it will save me loads of time, thanks!
It only makes cuts. But do not drill. There are programs that automatically tell you where the hole should be, it calculates automatically. But here it's just a drawing.
Yes we use CabinetSense for CNC. But there is always a tension between features and ease of use. Open Cutlist is a good choice for workshops with a panelsaw and no CNC
A really helpful video, thank you. I’m in the process of planning my first DIY wardrobe install and all your content has been incredibly useful. Many thanks.
Great video, never really worked with Sketchup as we use a cad program but the one thing that’s missing with ours is the ability to create a quick cutting list like this. Great time saver and very impressed by the function of naming and sorting pets via materials. I would be interested in knowing how well this would work with a CAD drawing imported from a 3rd party software. Never know you may well convert me to a sketch up user. Keep up the great work.
What a great plug-in, I've been using the standard CutList one and find it puts parts on a new board when there's half full ones. This one looks amazing.
Scott Dimelow yeah that was the only one available for a few years, if we’re talking about the same one - it wasn’t terrible but an ugly interface compared to this one and it relies on tagging component names with material words rather than using fills which is more elegant and easier to change
@@Alastair_Freebird Yeah the one you showed in the extension manager, did the job just about. I've just tried open cut list, it's absolutely amazing! Being able to add a scribing allowance by using a specific material is just excellent. Thanks for sharing.

Great video Alastair . Found this Cutlist a month or so ago. It’s absolutely fantastic Cutlist. The fact you can have multiple part materials is a game changer. Gonna try figure out how to setup a label printer to it.
Great tip on the plugin. Noticed that when you create an object that’s the same size and snapping to an existing object, and you just want to specify the width (like the plinth) you don’t need to type in both measurements. If you have already snapped to one measurement, then just type “comma second dimension” like this - ,18 In your example, you wanted to draw an item that was 582,18 and sketch up had already snapped to the 582 measurement, so just type in the measurement you want, by using a comma which says to sketch up “keep the dimension as calculated” and then just use the dimension I typed after the comma It works the other way to, so if your second measurement had snapped, then you would just put your first measurement in, then a comma then nothing. Prob not explaining it very well but saves a bit of time
Richard Orton thanks for that - I do understand what you mean and someone else pointed this out to me once but force of habit seems to have made me forget to start doing it that way!
🤯🤯🤯🤯🤯 wow that’s an amazing video you’ve just saved me hours of work today!! Was about to layout a cut list on two projects today and I’ve just done them both following this video which means I can spend more time with my daughter this afternoon!! Thank you 🙏 have a great day coffees on me today 😄
Great video Alistair, really like the plugin so going to have a play around with that today. Keep me posted on the workshop move, will see if we can work something out (about to return from furlough to the day job).
Brilliant! Thanks for sharing and talking us through this. I'm only a diyer but love sketchup. Not sure if i'm missing something, but I am designing some outdoor steps from chunky 150mm x 150mm treated timber. Using the sectional timber setting you can't seem to be able to define a length, as in the size the timber comes in e.g. 3.6m. You can only define the cross section, is that correct? What i have done as a work around is use the sheet goods settings and dimension the thickness as 150mm and panel size and 3600mm x 150mm. Would like to do this properly though!
Don't know if you ever got this figured out, but in case you still haven't, if you set it to dimensional lumber, you can set the cross section along with all different lengths it may come in.
Good guide thanks. I currently use the original Cutlist you mention but do find it a bit clunky. This looks far better! I've just downloaded it and will give it a spin.

Hi Alastair! Amaizing work, thanks for all of this! Also, ive been folowing the series, and noticed that sketch up make is no longer available, would you consider adding the download in your membership? Its daunting downloading it from a random website :/
Hi thank you for this feedback. It has been on my mind to do an update to this series showing the latest versions of SketchUp but I haven’t found the time. I’d be reluctant to officially sanction still using SketchUp Make as it is no longer supported and I think it would be better to use SketchUp free online, and then transition to purchasing SketchUp pro, which for what it can do is quite good value for a cad program
Hi Alastair, great video. I've been using this extension for a few weeks now and on the whole I think it's great. It can get a bit confusing when using a grained material. Also I do think the 'cutting parameters' option (for scribing) would be better on the part rather than the sheet material as having to create another material sort of mucks up the sheet optimisation. Keep up the good work 👍🏻
