Seiko Automatics Self Winding System Alignment, Why Does It Matter?

  • When a Seiko Automatic movement is rebuilt the First reduction wheel and Oscillating weight have to be correctly aligned for the self winding mechanism to work at it's optimum efficiency, but what does that mean and does it really make that much difference?

    Wow, brilliant! I've been dealing with poor winding for several years and have searched and searched on watch forums for an answer. I've even posted on forums that the Seiko 7s26 is *not* an efficient winder because my watch would only run for about 4 hours after 16 hours of wear. Yes, I'm sedentary, but my Orient Tri-star has never given me a problem with running down overnight. So, I just checked and my rotor was way off. I hope this works.

      It should make a difference and Seiko winding is incredibly efficient. With regular activity, walking around on a work day, 4 hours should see a full wind from empty.
      There is a possibility depending on the age of the watch that it's ready for a service however.

      I've simplified things. This has happened *twice*, both watches worked fine for about 4 months and then started running down overnight. I know I hadn't fiddled with the rotors. My theory was that the full wind gradually ran down until I was only running on what I put in each day. Once that happened the over night stoppages started. I can only understand this if the factory didn't position the rotor correctly. But we'll see what happens now. @@spidiq8

      I aligned the rotor and gave the watch the Seiko Shake for one minute and set it down and let it run. It ran for 2 hrs. 30 minutes! So the automatic wind is really efficient. However this didn't solve my problem. I think I've broken the automatic day advance by adjusting it during the hours you're not supposed to. I guess I didn't know about this back then. This was my first mechanical watch. Can you tell me what parts I will need to replace to fix this?

    Thanks for this video. I'd been thinking about my three Orient Star watches for a while with the fact that the rotor can fit in either of two positions. I did presume that it wouldn't matter which way up the rotor went as there are no markings, unlike Seiko. Anyway I did find that two of my three Orients had the rotor fixed in the inefficient position for a left hand wearer like myself. That's now sorted and I do think it does matter as the magic finger is below a bridge on the Orient and there is a small hole through the bridge so the finger position can be seen to be at the top or bottom of its travel. If it didn't matter then why would they put a viewing window there. Thanks again.

    Hi Sir my seiko 5 6106c is not working for long when I wore it (it stops in 2 minutes). I have opened it and find it that my watch is winding in clockwise direction But In anti clock wise directions it moves anticlockwise instead of clockwise directions. I had screwed my watch main gear clockwise it stated working for a full day. Suggest me please what might happened. Thanks

    What if the movement has a 4 o'clock crown? Does that mean that I should align the rotor at the 3 o'clock position instead of the crown, since that's the natural position of the wrist when worn on the left hand?

      You should fit in the 3 o'clock position as that's the natural hanging position unless you're a right wrist wearer in which case you'd set it to 9 o'clock.

      @@spidiq8 Cool, thanks! I find it weird that most Seikos with a 4 o'clock crown have the rotor aligned with the crown/stem from the factory, rather than with the 3 o'clock position. I guess this streamlines the manufacturing process, as all the workers have to know is to align the rotor with the crown/stem regardless of the movement variation.

      @@djdelarosa25 most likely that will be the standard procedure as there's no way to know on the production line which movent will go in which case but the difference between 3 and 4 will be very minimal.
      The system is incredibly efficient as it is.

    How about when the winding stem is at 4 and not 3 o'clock - would it better to place the oscillating weight, so it is completely downward when you are standing up with arms hanging down to the sides?

      Between 3 and 4 the difference would be so minimal as to not be noticeable but for the optimum efficiency the weight needs to be hanging at the 3 position. One of these movements with routine activity would wind fully from empty in 4 to 5 hours.

    Does this also hold true for the 6139? I think my 6139 is not winding fully….I suspect that the winding resistance gets higher as the mainspring gets more wound up to the point where the automatic rotor does not move freely anymore….

      Yes. All the 'magic finger' winding systems are the same, if it's binding up and not wondering fully to the point of slipping it'll be needing a strip and clean. The grease Seiko use in the mainspring barrels gets really dry and thick and that can make it stiff as the bridle won't slip easily.

      @@spidiq8 This is probably not true. The auto-winding mechanism of Seiko 6139 is slightly different in that it does not have the "1st reduction wheel". The rotor directly connects to the eccentric mechanism that operates the magic levers. In 6139, there are two keyed positions you can install the rotor. I never thought about checking which position works better until I saw your video, so thank you. I will check next time I open the watch. This is also the case in 6309, 6319 and other vintage 6xxx series.

      @@gang208 They all have a reduction wheel system, the 6139/8 and a couple of others differ only in that the bearing is on the bridge rather than fitted to the oscillating weight as per the 7S26 and NH etc.
      A reduction system is necessary in all automatic winding works as the weights would not have enough inertia to wind directly.

    I have seiko 5 with 7s26 and seiko 5 sport with 4r36 with this winding sistem magic lever but after 10 or 20 dais they both stops usually in the morning when I sleep and I can say that this winding sistem don't wind enough don't know why but don't work ok

      The winding system is one of the most efficient auto winding systems created.
      approximately 4 hours of general activity, not sedate but not excessive, just walking around and lifting and moving things for example will give a full wind from empty which should give about 30 hours of running.
      Unless you're very sedentary and don't move much at all it should wind sufficiently, if not they're likely ready for a service.

      I assume you mean as the oscillating weight spins anticlockwise it doesn't wind the barrel ratchet wheel clockwise? If so then you have a faulty first reduction wheel or pawl lever and it's slipping rather than driving the ratchet as it should. The click for the mainspring barrel may also be worn or damaged.
